The Life of Phillis Wheatley Poem Phillis' Life Summary Links to Further Research Bibliography ... Time-line She was an African American slave who lived in the 18th century, yet Phillis Wheatley was treated almost like an equal. Her accomplishments were known all over the world. She was famous, yet what would become of her when the War of Independence began? She was still owned (by a nice mistress) as a slave, and not even her poems would prepare her for what the next few years would bring... On the West Coast of Africa, in 1754, a girl was born into a tribe known as the Fulani. Only eight years later, a schooner named "Phillis" came into the peaceful West Coast and captured her along with 80 others. She was taken from her mother by a man named Timothy Fitch. She traveled by boat on a journey that not many withstood. She was remarkable, even with her frail health, and would soon become known all over the world. At a dock in Boston, there stood a woman named Susannah Wheatley. She took an immediate liking to the frail little girl and bought her. She named her Phillis after the schooner that brought her to slavery. She wanted a maid, but she got what would soon become the mother of American literature. She did not treat Phillis as others would. She immediately saw that Phillis was unlike anyone she had ever met. In a year, she knew English very well and by the age of thirteen was writing poetry. She was well supplied with pens, ink and paper and also well educated, unlike most blacks. She was taught by Susannah's daughter, Mary.
