She was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and spent most of her adult life in mental hospitals. After various unsuccessful attempts at therapy, her parents eventually allowed a prefrontal lobotomy in an effort to treat her. The operation, performed in 1943, in Washington, D.C., went badly, and Rose remained incapacitated for the rest of her life. In 1929, Williams entered the University of Missouri. His success there was dubious, and in 1931 he began work for a St. Louis shoe company. It was six years later when his first play, Cairo, Shanghai, Bombay

    GLASS MENAGERIE
Tennessee Williams Harold Bloom?s introduction suggests Tennessee Williams is the most literary of American dramatists. Examine The Glass Menagerie with some of the best criticism written about it, including ?Catastrophe without Violence,? ?The Southern Gentlewoman,? and ?Celebration of a Certain Courage.? The title, Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie, part of Chelsea House Publishers' Modern Critical Interpretations series, presents the most important 20th-century criticism on Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie through extracts of critical essays by well-known literary critics. This collection of criticism also features a short biography on Tennessee Williams, a chronology of the author's life, and an introductory essay written by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University. Return to Night of the Iguana
    Tennessee Williams
One of America’s greatest playwrights, and certainly the greatest ever from the South, Tennessee Williams wrote fiction and motion picture screenplays, but he is acclaimed primarily for his play—nearly all of which are set in the South, but which at their best rise above regionalism to approach universal themes. More about Tennessee Williams Thomas Lanier Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi, on March 26, 1911, the first son and second child of Cornelius Coffin and Edwina Dakin Williams . His mother, the daughter of a minister, was of genteel upbringing, while his father, a shoe salesman, came from a prestigious Tennessee family which included the state’s first governor and first senator. The family lived for several years in Clarksdale, Mississippi, before moving to St. Louis in 1918. At the age of 16, he encountered his first brush with the publishing world when he won third prize and received $5 for an essay, “Can a Good Wife Be a Good Sport?,” in Smart Set A year later, he published “The Vengeance of Nitocris” in

    36. DAF -- THREE AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHTS: Williams, Albee, Shepard
Tennessee Williams (http//www.olemiss. edu/depts/english/mswriters/dir/williams_tennessee/); Edward Albee
    http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dfox/threeplaywrights1syllabus.html
Three American Playwrights: Williams, Albee, Shepard About the Course We will examine closely three playwrights – Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee and Sam Shepard – whose writing both reflected and shaped five decades (and counting) of the American theatre. While their plays may initially seem disimilar, all three use the paradigm of American realism as a point of departure in creating works that incorporate magic realism, absurdism, performance art, and any number of other prominent 20th Century theatre movements. Above all, these are writers whose voices are grounded in deeply personal, poetic language and imagery and whose dramas both form and inform the canon of modern American theatre. I shall expect that each and every student in the class is interested in the application of thoughtful, scholarly analysis to the plays we read. It is possible to be both fans and scholars, but the goal and methodology of this course are inquiry and analysis. Class Format and Attendance This class meets once a week – Mondays 4:30-7:10pm. It will be conducted as a seminar: that is to say that collective discussions involving my input as well as yours will be the mode of each session. As such, attendance and participation are crucial factors for your success. In a once-a-week course, I permit one absence: more will adversely affect your grade. You are also expected to show up for class on time, and to remain for the entire session. In addition, all students are expected to complete the required reading and (where applicable) writing assignments or oral presentations for each session. In a small group such, each member of the class has the right to expect others in the group to be present and prepared.
