Wordsworth, William Wordsworth, William (1770-1850), English poet, one of the most accomplished and influential of England's Romantic poets, whose theories and style created a new tradition in poetry. Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770, in Cockermouth, Cumbria, and educated at St John's College, Cambridge University. He developed a keen love of nature as a youth, and during school holidays he frequently visited places noted for their scenic beauty. In the summer of 1790 he took a walking tour through France and Switzerland. After receiving his degree in 1791 he returned to France, where he became an enthusiastic convert to the ideals of the French Revolution (1789-1799). His lover, Annette Vallon of Orl©ans, bore him a daughter in December 1792, shortly before his return to England but he did not see the child until she was nine years old due to the outbreak of war between England and France. Disheartened by the outbreak of hostilities between France and Great Britain in 1793, Wordsworth nevertheless remained sympathetic to the French cause. Although Wordsworth had begun to write poetry while still a schoolboy, none of his poems was published until 1793, when

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,

Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the Milky Way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance

By William Wordsworth
SHE dwelt among the untrodden ways
Beside the springs of Dove,
A Maid whom there were none to praise
And very few to love:
A violet by a mossy stone
Half hidden from the eye! Fair as a star, when only one Is shining in the sky. She lived unknown, and few could know When Lucy ceased to be; But she is in her grave, and, oh, The difference to me! oeta romántico británico (1770-1850), uno de los lakistas más representativos.
