Malcolm X (1925-1965) While Martin Luther King, Jr. rose to national prominence professing nonviolent direct action and interracial organizing in the late 1950s and 1960s, Malcolm X became a leader in the Nation of Islam, advocating armed self-defense and the rejection of white allies. Upon leaving the Nation of Islam in 1964, however, Malcolm's ideology shifted to a unified, coalition-oriented struggle for black advancement. While King and Malcolm continued to be at odds over the role of nonviolence in the movement, Malcolm met with other civil rights organizations in the South and repeatedly tried to establish a relationship with King. Although King and Malcolm X never worked together, Malcolm's ideology directly influenced the southern civil rights movement after his 1965 death with the emergence of Black Power. In 1941, Malcolm left Michigan to live in Boston. While there, he held a variety of jobs and became increasingly involved in criminal activities. He was arrested in 1946 for larceny and breaking and entering and was sent to prison. While in jail, Malcolm responded to the urgings of his brother Reginald and became a fol lower of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Temple of Islam, a small black nationalist Islamic sect. (Later named the Nation of Islam, the sect is often called the black Muslims.) Drawn to the religious group's racial doctrines, which categorized whites as "devils," Malcolm began reading extensively about world history and politics, particularly concerning African slavery and the oppression of black people in America. After he was paroled from prison in August 1952, he became Minister Malcolm X, using the surname assigned to him in place of the African name that had been taken from his slave ancestors.

View quote Quotes about Brotherhood It is impossible for capitalism to survive, primarily because the system of capitalism needs some blood to suck. Capitalism used to be like an eagle, but now it's more like a vulture. It used to be strong enough to go and suck anybody's blood whether they were strong or not. But now it has become more cowardly, like the vulture, and it can only suck the blood of the helpless. As the nations of the world free themselves, the capitalism has less victims, less to suck, and it becomes weaker and weaker. It's only a matter of time in my opinion before it will collapse completely.

Raclopride Instructions
1. Introduction This document is designed to be a recipe for analyzing PET Raclopride data on the MNI BIC servers. There are several big steps to the analysis; 1) Preprocessing: The goal of this analysis is to move your data from the raw PET and MRI images generated by the scanners in their own distinctive spaces, to a common format where all of your data is directly comparable. 2) Calculating Binding Potential: Raw PET images are made up of radiation counts in particular voxels. These radiation counts are a combination of tracer that is moving freely within the brain, and the fraction of the tracer that is specifically bound to dopamine receptors. We are interested in the bound fraction, while the free fraction represents noise. Fortunately the cerebellum contains almost no D2 receptors, so the radiation counts there are almost entirely from free tracer. By comparing the activity in the cerebellum to the rest of the brain a map of only the bound fraction can be generated. 3) Generating a t-map: Every voxel in the Binding Potential map has a mean and a standard deviation, and preprocessing moved each individual’s brain into the same space. This is enough information to conduct a t-test to see which voxels differ between experimental conditions. By comparing each voxel to its corresponding voxel in the other experimental condition we can generate a map of the t-values throughout the brain. t values above 4.2 indicate significantly different voxels.

Writing of the Autobiography This book, published in 1965, originated from interviews with Malcolm X conducted by Alex Haley and published in the May 1963 issue of Playboy Magazine. Malcolm X and Haley spent over a year and a half together talking about Malcolm’s life. Haley left scraps of paper lying around the interview room, so that Malcolm could scribble down thoughts and ideas as they came to him. The major breakthrough between Haley and Malcolm came through discussing Malcolm’s mother. This allowed the men to overcome some of the barriers between them and allowed the story to take shape and grow. Scholars and critics have explored how this text was constructed, noting that Haley rewrote parts of the book he found offensive without Malcolm’s knowledge. It seems clear that Haley as the author and Malcolm as the story teller sculpted events and characters to support a specific interpretation of Malcolm X’s life. In the words of scholar Michael Eric Dyson:

Human Rights vs Civil Rights
For a radicalism of human rights
http://phoenix.swarthmore.edu/2004-02-12/opinions/13674
Everybody knows that Malcolm X was radical and that the Rev. Dr. King was not, but it’s usually for the wrong reason. Most agree with that statement because one advocated self-defense while the other turned the other cheek, as if the dialectic between the two greatest philosophers of the last half-century could come down to something as petty as “Kill whitey!” vs. “Love thy neighbor.” White and black bourgeois fearful of black power have caricatured these heroes as mere icons of the violence vs. non-violence controversy. We must see beyond that red herring to their true African-American dialectic — human rights vs. civil rights.
It is not a question of either-or, human rights or civil rights. Each is a concentric circle of justice, with civil rights as the inner circle and human rights as the outer circle. Here, civil rights are particular, specific to the United States of America. Human rights are universal, general to every human being. Since 1776, civil rights have been the North American Caucasian’s by birthright. Since 1965, they have been the North American Negro’s by an act of Congress. The Declaration of Independence is the white man’s holy writ of freedom. The black man’s is the Voting Rights Act.
