Xenophon
Xenophon (Prado, Madrid; Xenophon (c.430-c.354): Athenian historian, author of the Anabasis. When Xenophon, the son of Gryllus, was still a young man, he was a student of Socrates and later, he took part in the campaign of the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger against his brother, king Artaxerxes II Mnemon , which failed in the battle of Cunaxa (401). On his return from the east, Xenophon was in some trouble, because he had by now become a mercenary leader with a band of rather ill-disciplined followers. However, his meeting with the Spartan king Agesilaus II and their joint campaign in Anatolia changed his fortunes. On their return to Greece, the king gave Xenophon a country estate near Olympia, where he started a career as a writer. Cyrus the Great , a Symposium , and a book on horses. His masterpiece is the fascinating account of Cyrus' expedition against king Artaxerxes, the Anabasis . The chapters on Armenia , where the soldiers had to pass through endless snow fields, are among the highlights of Greek literature. Towards the end of his life, Spartan power collapsed (Xenophon's son Gryllus was killed in action in the battle of Mantinea) and he was forced to move to Corinth. Here he wrote his

Search A few months back I talked up Herodotus Conversations of Socrates carried me most of the long way from Vancouver to Heathrow today (these new Powerbooks get two hours max, four if you turn the screen off and use it as a music box). The Socrates is a bit of a plodder, but herewith an unabashed rave over his Anabasis , a totally unbelievable true story well-told, and some general remarks as to why you might want to read these long-dead writers. Why Read Classics? Socrates Anabasis! What happened is still amazing a couple of millennia later; they elected new officers (including Xenophon), fought their way North through the Empire to the Black Sea, then East eventually back to Greek territory. Xenophon is not that great a writer, but he gets out of the way and lets the story tell itself, which is more than enough in this case. Anabasis is sometimes sold with title untranslated, sometimes as The March Upcountry or The Persian Expedition Socrates Anabasis , Xenophon is wondering whether he should join the expedition. He asks Socrates for advice on the matter (yes, that Socrates); the story of how he dodges around the advice, and how Socrates reacts, is a spoiler too juicy to give away here. Still, I wish I had Socrates around to go ask for advice on my problems.

Xenophon Excess of grief for the dead is madness; for it is an injury to the living, and the dead know it not. Xenophon Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything. Xenophon For drink, there was beer which was very strong when not mingled with water, but was agreeable to those who were used to it. They drank this with a reed, out of the vessel that held the beer, upon which they saw the barley swim. Xenophon For what the horse does under compulsion, as Simon also observes, is done without understanding; and there is no beauty in it either, any more than if one should whip and spur a dancer. THE EDUCATION OF CYRUS
XENOPHON
In Eight Parts Part One Life: He was born in Athens about 431 B.C. and was a student of Socrates. He was hired as a mercenary by Cyrus, the younger brother of the Persian king, Artaxerxes, against whom he rebelled. When the rebellion failed at the battle of Cunaxa, Xenophon led the famous retreat of the Ten Thousand, all the Greek mercenaries who were trapped in Mesopotamia. On his return to Greece, he worked as a mercenary for the Spartans in their wars in Asia Minor and in Greece against the Athenians. The Spartans rewarded him with a country estate where he enjoyed the life of the landed gentry. Xenophon lost his estate in a war and settled in Corinth for the remainder of his life. He died sometime after 355 B.C. over 80 years old. Writings on the Persians: His most famous work is Anabasis, the story of the Ten Thousand. It contains a lot of information about Cyrus the Younger, Artaxerxes and the Persian army. He also wrote this book Cyropaedia, about the education and life of Cyrus. Xenophon, Cyropaedia

The Symposium
Xenophon (In Greek , ca. 431–355 BC), son of Gryllus, of the deme Erchia of Athens, was a soldier, mercenary and an admirer of Socrates and is known for his writings on the history of his own times, the sayings of Socrates, and the life of Greece. Life and writings It is estimated that Xenophon was born in 431 BC around Athens, Greece. Very little is known about his childhood and family. While a young man, Xenophon participated in the expedition led by Cyrus the Younger against his older brother, the emperor Artaxerxes II of Persia, in 401 BC. Xenophon says that he had asked the veteran Socrates for advice on whether to go with Cyrus, and that Socrates referred him to the divinely inspired Delphic oracle. Xenophon's query to the oracle, however, was not whether or not to accept Cyrus' invitation, but "to which of the gods he must pray and do sacrifice, so that he might best accomplish his intended journey and return in safety, with good fortune." So the oracle told him which gods to pray and sacrifice to. When Xenophon returned to Athens and told Socrates of the oracle's advice, Socrates chastised him for putting the wrong question to the oracle, but said, "Since, however, you did so put the question, you should do what the god enjoined." Route of Xenophon and the Ten Thousand.
