About Acupressure
Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves applying pressure to certain meridian points on the body to relieve pain. The human body has fourteen "meridians" that carry energy throughout the body. These meridians start at the fingertips, connect to the brain, and then connect to the organ associated with the specific meridian.
Acupuncture and Acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture uses needles, while Acupressure uses the gentle but firm pressure of hands. There is a massive amount of scientific data that demonstrates why and how acupuncture is effective.

How does acupressure work?
When I get a headache , my friend presses a spot on my hand. Somehow, this makes my headache go away. How does this work? Your friend is using a very old (about 5,000 years) and widely practiced form of body work called acupressure . Like acupuncture , this practice comes from traditional Chinese medicine. Although acupuncture is more widely known, most sources suggest that acupressure actually predates acupuncture by about 2,500 years. Acupressure and acupuncture, as well as other therapies such as Shiatsu and reflexology , are based on the concept of a person's energy, or life force. This belief system theorizes that a life force, known as chi or qi (pronounced chee ) travels through the body along pathways called meridians . Traditional Chinese medicine dictates that there are 20 meridians. However, in acupressure and acupuncture, most work centers around 14 meridians: the 12 regular meridians (see sidebar) and two extra meridians known as the

It uses touch or pressure rather than needles. Shiatsu is a Japanese bodywork practice that uses acupressure. Tui Na is an older Chinese technique that uses pressure on acupuncture points (acupoints) along with other methods.
Bodywork refers to a variety of techniques that touch, manipulate, or otherwise work on the body. Massage and non-Asian types of bodywork are addressed separately (see Bodywork Massage OVERVIEW There is some evidence from studies with cancer patients that acupressure may be helpful in reducing early nausea related to chemotherapy. Available scientific evidence does not suggest acupressure and other types of Asian bodywork are effective in treating cancer, but they may be used to enhance quality of life for some. Many forms of bodywork may have the potential to help relieve pain and reduce stress, even though the effectiveness of these techniques has not yet been proven scientifically. How is it promoted for use?

Has either of these practices been helpful in treating any medical conditions? Thank you for any information you can provide me. Dear Pondering pins and points, Both acupuncture and acupressure have their origins in traditional Chinese medicine. They were developed thousands of years ago as a way of channeling and balancing a person's life force. An imbalance of life force is believed to cause illness in both the mind and body. There's a pointed difference between acupuncture and acupressure. In acupuncture, a hair-like needle is inserted into specific areas in the body. The area can then be stimulated by twirling the needle or attaching it to a mild electrical current. In acupressure, the same areas are stimulated and energy is redirected through the use of pressure applied with the fingers or small seeds or metal balls. Western health care or allopathic medicine practitioners, who have been studying acupuncture and acupressure for about thirty years, have not been able to explain exactly why they work, but many report benefits. Acupuncture and acupressure have been shown to relieve chronic pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, migraines, and menstrual cramps. Acupuncture is also being studied as a possible treatment for alcohol and other drug addiction, and to relieve pain in dental surgery.
