As a result, it is generally used in conjunction with herbal, massage, diet and exercise therapies to maximize health, prevent illness and treat disease (see our Chinese Traditional Medicine Resource Guide). Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,500 years ago and spread first throughout Asia, and later to Europe and the Americas. While it has been offered in Asian communities throughout the United States for many generations, it is only since 1970, following the opening of China to the West, that this system of health care has been available to the general population in this country. It is now used by over 1 million Americans. According to Western medicine, the effects of Acupuncture are probably the result of stimulating the nervous system to release chemicals which may in turn release other hormones producing the desired effects. This theory is supported by t

Acupuncture (from Lat. acus, "needle" (noun), and pungere, "prick" (verb) is one of the main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (others being herbal medicine and tui na). It is a therapeutic technique from that framework intended to restore health and well-being. The term acupuncture is often used by Westerners to refer to Chinese medicine generally. The technique involves the insertion of needles into "acupuncture points" on the body by trained practitioners. The needles most commonly used in present-day practice are made of stainless steel and are of approximately the same diameter as a medium thickness guitar string (from approximately .01" to .02"). Although the clinical efficacy of this practice is debated, the traditional theory underlying its mechanisms has no basis in modern scientific conceptions of physiology and is therefore considered by its critics to be a pseudoscience. While many of its practitioners and proponents promote it in a modern, clinical manner, acupuncture and related practices predate modern concepts of science.

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Find Acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools in the United States and Canada. Laws for Acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools differ from state to state; therefore, individual acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools entail their own philosophy and instruction outline.
Education and training programs at acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools involve approximately 3,000 credit hours. Because there are varying theories of Acupuncture, some acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools teach the 5-Element style of acupuncture as opposed to the more familiar TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) style.
While some acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools have mandatory herbal curriculums, other acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools list this study as an elective course.
One of the main purposes of attending acupuncture schools and Oriental medicine schools is to be educated and trained to be healers in the art; to learn the science and philosophy of acupuncture, and to be proficiently instructed in herbal and Oriental medicine.
Attaining a professional license as an acupuncturist is rewarding in many ways: One not only learns to heal others but also learns to heal the self - spiritually, mentally and physically.

The intent of acupuncture therapy is to promote health and alleviate pain and suffering. The method by which this is accomplished, though it may seem strange and mysterious to many, has been time tested over thousands of years and continues to be validated today.
The perspective from which an acupuncturist views health and sickness hinges on concepts of "vital energy," "energetic balance" and "energetic imbalance." Just as the Western medical doctor monitors the blood flowing through blood vessels and the messages traveling via the nervous system, the acupuncturist assesses the flow and distribution of this "vital energy" within its pathways, known as "meridians and channels".
The acupuncturist is able to influence health and sickness by stimulating certain areas along these "meridians". Traditionally these areas or "acupoints" were stimulated by fine, slender needles. Today, many additional forms of stimulation are incorporated, including herbs, electricity, magnets and lasers. Still, the aim remains the same - adjust the "vital energy" so the proper amount reaches the proper place at the proper time. This helps your body heal itself.

Treating Infertility using Acupuncture
Email Acupuncture is the insertion of ultra-thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body which reside on channels or meridians; these are pathways in both the exterior and interior of the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions. Acupuncture helps by addressing problems that affect fertility such as under-functioning (hypothyroidism) or over-functioning (hyperthyroidism).
Can acupuncture be used to treat infertility?
Acupuncture, frequently combined with herbal medicine, has been used for centuries to treat some causes of infertility. For example, acupuncture and herbs will not work to address tubal adhesions which can occur as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. However, in this situation, an individual could still benefit from acupuncture and herbs because of the potential effect of improved ovarian and follicular function. Additionally, it is shown that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to facilitate a thick, rich lining.
