    Introduction
Addison's disease (also called as Hypoadrenocortisim) is caused by a lower than normal production of steroid (corticosteroids) hormones (Glucocorticoid and Mineralocorticoid) by the adrenal glands in the body. This disease was first identified by Dr Tomas Addison in 1885.
The two adrenal glands present atop each of the two kidneys, are responsible for secreting hormones which affect virtually every organ and tissue system of our body.

    The Facts
Addison's disease, also know as primary adrenal insufficiency, is a rare condition that affects the body's hormonal activity. It is named after Dr. Thomas Addison, who discovered it in 1849. Addison's disease occurs when the body is not able to make enough of the hormones cortisol and/or aldosterone. Each hormone works differently within the body. If either hormone is not present in sufficient amounts, there is an effect on many body systems. Blood pressure, the immune system, metabolism, sexual function, and insulin levels are just some of the body's duties that these hormones affect on a daily basis.
    Causes
Addison's disease, also know as primary adrenal insufficiency, is caused by a problem within the adrenal glands themselves.

    Addison's Disease
Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency) usually results from an autoimmune response in wchich circulating antibodies react specifically against the adrenal gland and destroy it. Addison's disease occurs when more than 90% of both adrenal glands are destroyed. Other causes include tuberculosis (once the chief cause), bilateral adrenalectomy, neoplasms and infections (histoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus). Rarely, a family history of autoimmune disease predisposes th patien to Addison's disease and other endoctine system disoders. SYMPTOMS
Addison's disease typically produces such effects as weakness, fatigue, weight loss, and various GI disturbances, such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite (anorexia), and chronic diarrhea. A simple, noninvasive saliva test known as the Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) can determine whether an imbalance in the adrenal gland exists. Te ASI test also evaluates how well the adrenal glands function by tracking their 24-hour circadian rhythm. Based on the laboratory results, medicl practitiones can prescribe the appropriate treatment to restore the balance of hormones. The disorder also usually causes a conspicuous bronze coloration of the skin. The patient appears to be deeply suntanned, especially in the creases of the hands, elbows, and the knees. He also may exhibit a darkening of scars, areas of vitiligo (absence of pigmentation), and increased pigmentation of the mucous membranes. Such abnormalities result from decreased secretion of cortisol (one of the glucocorticoids), which causes the pituitary gland to simultaneously secrete excessive amounts of

    Adrenal Underactivity
    Symptoms:
Dizziness, fainting, nausea, loss of appetite, moodiness, decrease in body hair, inability to cope with stress. Slight darkening and discoloration of the skin is more noticeable when body parts are exposed to the sun. This would include forehead, knees, elbows, scars, skin folds and creases (on the palms, etc.). The mouth and freckles may appear darker. The hair becomes darker.
Bands of pigment run the length of the nails.
Reduced adrenal function (resulting either from Addison's or Cushing's Disease) can result in weakness, headaches, memory problems, dizziness, allergies, food cravings, and blood sugar disorders.
    Cause:
Both the adrenal underactivity of Addison's Disease and the overactivity of Cushing's Disease are caused by problems in the function of the adrenal glands.
Continued use of cortisone drugs for arthritis and asthma, etc., damage the adrenals. Those drugs cause them to shrink in size and not work properly. Yet, surprisingly enough, the shrunken glands can still overproduce and cause Cushing's Disease or underproduce and cause Addison's.
There is a way you can pinpoint whether or not your adrenals are functioning normally:
The systolic is the first number in a blood pressure reading, and the diastolic is the second. For example, 120/80. The systolic should be 10 points higher when you are standing than when you are lying down.

    Addison's disease
(Thomas Addison, 1793 - 1860, English physician), a rare condition due to chronic destructive disease of the adrenal cortex, and characterized clinically by primary adrenocortical insufficiency. Secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, due to lack of ACTH, does not constitute Addison's disease. Most cases of Addison's disease are idiopathic, and may represent autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex. Clearly defined causes of Addison's disease are extremely rare, and include tuberculosis (see tuberculosis adrenal amyloidosis , bilateral adrenal metastases, bilateral haemorrhage , histoplasmosis, sarcoidosis (see histoplasmosis adrenal and sarcoidosis genitourinary tract and haemochromatosis . Historically, tuberculosis was a frequent cause of Addison's disease, but this is now uncommon.

It's Time for the Truth about Autoimmunity! Home About Heidi FREE Online eCourse Supplements ... Glyconutrient Information Addison's Disease Description: from MayoClinic Addison's disease is a disorder that results in your body producing insufficient amounts of certain hormones produced by your adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands are located just above each of your two kidneys. These glands are part of your endocrine system, and they produce hormones that give instructions to virtually every organ and tissue in your body. In Addison's disease, your adrenal glands produce too little cortisol, which is one of the hormones in a group called the glucocorticoids. Sometimes, Addison's disease also involves insufficient production of aldosterone, one of the mineralocorticoid hormones. Addison's disease can be life-threatening. Also called adrenal insufficiency or hypocortisolism, Addison's disease can occur at any age, but is most common in people ages 30 to 50. Treatment for Addison's disease involves taking hormones to replace the insufficient amounts being made by your adrenal glands.

    Addison's Disease
A disease of the adrenal glands, which are pyramid-shaped organs which sit above the kidneys. The adrenal glands produce vital hormones: corticosteroids (eg cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (eg aldosterone). In Addison's Disease the adrenal glands are unable to produce sufficient quantities of these hormones. Typical symptoms include weakness, apathy, weight loss, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and menstrual disorder. Sufferers may show increased pigmentation of the skin in the creases of the palms and in their mouths. In addition, there may be acute drops in blood pressure on standing, leading to black outs. 80% of cases have no known cause. Of the remaining 20%, many are of auto-immune origin - abnormally the sufferer's own antibodies are driven to attack his or her adrenal glands. The overall outlook for this disorder is usually good provided there is adequate treatment. This treatment will be required for life.
    Complementary Health Advice:
Sufferers of Addison's Disease are prone to losing excessive potassium from their bodies. It may therefore be appropriate to take potassium supplementation. Potassium is essential for a wide range of functions in the body and deficiency can account for a number of the clinical features of
