Afghanistan History
Excavation of prehistoric sites by Louis Dupree, the University of Pennsylvania, the Smithsonian Institute and others suggests that early humans were living in what is now Afghanistan at least 50,000 years ago, and that farming communities in Afghanistan were among the earliest in the world.[1][2]
Afghanistan's history, internal political development, foreign relations, and very existence as an independent state have largely been determined by its geographic location at the crossroads of Central, West, and South Asia. Over the centuries, waves of migrating peoples passed through the regiondescribed by historian Arnold Toynbee as a "roundabout of the ancient world"leaving behind a mosaic of ethnic and linguistic groups. In modern times, as well as in antiquity, vast armies of the world passed through this region of Asia, temporarily establishing local control and often dominating ancient Afghanistan.

THE ALUMNI NEWSLETTER OF THE SCHOOL OF GENERAL STUDIES A Brief History of Recent
conflicts in Afghanistan
The following is a brief look at Afghanistan’s most recent past. For this historical perspective, I rely on two sources: The Soviet Afghan War: How a Super Power Fought and Lost, by Lester W. Grau and Michael A. Gress, and The Taliban, by Ahmed Rashid, in addition to my personal experiences. —Brianne Leary Many of those who have escaped death are refugees continually displaced by conflict. By 1978, it was painfully apparent that the mujahedeen were not to be quelled. The Soviets controlled the cities, but the tribal elders and war lords controlled the countryside. Establishing socialism in Afghanistan had become a bloody nightmare for the Soviets. On Christmas Eve of 1979, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, killed President Nur M. Taraki, and installed their own leader. This was to be a three-year plan meant to stabilize the situation by strengthening the army and withdrawing. Like in Vietnam, the Soviets found themselves using conventional war tactics against a guerrilla force. Enter the United States and President Ronald Reagan. His “Peace Through Strength” campaign challenged Soviet expansionism, thus offering support to these “freedom fighters” struggling against the “Evil Empire.”

On September 27, 1996, the Taliban, an extremist militia, seized control of the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, and violently plunged the occupied territories of Afghanistan into a brutal state of gender apartheid in which women and girls were stripped of their basic human rights. "If this was happening to any other class of people around the world, there would be a tremendous outcry. We must make sure these same standards are applied when it is women and girls who are brutally treated."
-Eleanor Smeal, President, Feminist Majority Foundation Gender Apartheid Taliban in Opposition to Islam Who Is the Taliban US Corporate Interests ... FMF's Campaign Gender Apartheid - The Elimination of Women's Rights Upon seizing power, the Taliban instituted a system of gender apartheid effectively thrusting the women of Afghanistan into a state of virtual house arrest. Under Taliban rule women were stripped of their visibility, voice, and mobility. When they took control in 1996, the Taliban initially imposed strict edicts that:
  • Banished women from the work force Closed schools to girls in cities and expelled women from universities Prohibited women from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a close male relative Ordered the publicly visible windows of women's houses painted black and forced women to wear the burqa (or chadari) - which completely shrouds the body, leaving only a small mesh-covered opening through which to see

The History of Afghanistan
Significant amount of Afghan’s history can be interpreted in terms of its geographic location. Afghanistan is the only link between The Middle Eastern Countries, Central Asia, and Indian sub-continent. Consequent to this, the history of Afghanistan is a tragic one, the nation continuously being torn and ravaged by wars, invasions, and internal disturbances. Over the ages, more than a dozen of ethnic groups have entered and inhabited the nation making it an assortment of different nationalities. A few of the major races of the nation are Pashtun, Baluch, Tajik, Nuristani, Chahar Pashai, Aimak, Turkmen, Arab, Hazara, Uzbek, Kirghiz, and Persian. Pashtun is the original tribe of the nation constituting about half of its population. Extending back into the past, Afghanistan had been under the rule of various Persian, Greek, Sassasian, and Central Asian empires. Islam entered the nation in the eighth century with the arrival of Arabs who established their sovereignty on the soil. The breaking of Arab rule gave way to the formation of semi-independent states. In 1200, the Mongolian invasion wiped out the local dynasties and established a firm control over the country until the 1500s amidst several internal riots and disturbances. After the collapse of the Mongol rule, Afghanistan got caught between the vice of two big powers namely the Mughals of northern India and the Safavids of Iran finding a great devastation and slaughtering of people by the armies of these big powers.

HISTORY
Afghanistan, often called the crossroads of Central Asia,
has had a turbulent history. In 328 BC, Alexander the
Great entered the territory of present-day Afghanistan,
then part of the Persian Empire, to capture Bactria
(present-day Balkh). Invasions by the Scythians, White
Huns, and Turks followed in succeeding centuries. In AD
642, Arabs invaded the entire region and introduced
Islam. Arab rule quickly gave way to the Persians, who
controlled the area until conquered by the Turkic
Ghaznavids in 998. Mahmud of Ghazni (998-1030) consolidated the conquests of his predecessors and turned Ghazni into a great cultural center as well as a base for frequent forays into India. Following Mahmud's short- lived dynasty, various princes attempted to rule sections of the country until the Mongol invasion of 1219. The Mongol invasion, led by Genghis Khan, resulted in the destruction of many cities, including Herat, Ghazni, and Balkh, and the despoliation of fertile agricultural areas.

MAUES AT TAXILA: PROBLEMS OF HIS ARRIVAL – ROUTE AND POLITICAL ALLEGIANCE BY A.D.H. Bivar Among leaders who have ruled over the countryside round Islamabad, and whose seat of government lay nearby at Taxila, one of the least known yet perhaps also most remarkable was the Saca Maues. In the crisis of history that saw the destruction of the Graeco-Bactrian principalities of Alexander’s legacy, and the advent of that vast wave of Central Asian peoples whose progeny constitutes a major element in Pakistan to-day, the role of Maues was certainly a decisive one. Yet just what that role was, and how outstanding was his achievement, is a story only gradually taking shape. For a decade or so, therefore, the Sacae – at this time usually designated by historians the Sacaraucae "nomadic Sacae" – could pasture in peace on the south bank of the Oxus. It must be to this period that the astonishing finds made by Soviet archaeologists during 1979 at Shibarghan in Afghanistan belong. In the graves of tribal chiefs, large quantities of gold ornaments and equipment were unearthed, armlets, scabbards and belt-buckles, besides a mass of beads and minor jewellery. From the preliminary publications that have so far appeared, more concerned up to now with detailed description that with historical interpretation, three separate stylistic groups of objects can be distinguished. The first represents the so-called Scytho-Siberian style, hitherto best known from the treasures of Peter the Great at Leningrad, recovered during the 18
