The Vision of Faust ) by Luis Riccardo Fal©ro At the start of the twentieth century , artists like Picasso Matisse Vincent Van Gogh and Modigliani became aware of, and inspired by, African art . In a situation where the established avant-garde was straining against the constraints imposed by serving the world of appearances, African Art demonstrated the power of supremely well organised forms; produced not only by responding to the faculty of sight, but also and often primarily, the faculty of imagination, emotion and mystical and religious experience. These artists saw in African Art a formal perfection and sophistication unified with phenomenal expressive power. The study of and response to African Art, by artists at the beginning of the twentieth century facilitated an explosion of interest in the abstraction, organisation and reorganisation of forms, and the exploration of emotional and psychological areas hitherto unseen in Western Art. By these means, the status of visual art was changed. Art ceased to be merely and primarily aesthetic, but became also a true medium for philosophic and intellectual discourse, and hence more truly and profoundly aesthetic than ever before. edit

The Coray Collection of the V¶lkerkundemuseum der Universit¤t Z¼rich (Museum of Ethnology, Zurich University), is one of the earliest and most significant collections of African art. Assembled by Han Coray - a teacher, gallery owner and publisher in Zurich - the majority of the works were originally acquired during the 1920's from the renowned Paris art dealer, Paul Guillaume. Coray's interest in African art began by 1916 - the first Dada exhibition was in his Zurich gallery in January 1917 and included a number of "art n¨gre" works from his own collection, as well as a Baule figure on loan from Guillaume. Coray's galleries were the meeting place for the Dada and avant-garde artists of the period, and among his friends were Hans Arp, Marcel Janco, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Tristan Tzara, Hans Richter, and the two founders of the Cabaret Voltaire, Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings. At this same time, Guillaume was selecting African art works for the collection of A.C. Barnes, the important American collector. The establishment of this core group of African sculptures in Merion, Pennsylvania, was a significant motivation of Coray's zeal as an African art collector.

Rock Art Painting and Engravings. KhoiKhoi and San tribes South Africa The vast proportion of rock paintings and engravings from South Africa are the work of the San (One of South Africa's oldest tribes) Some elements such as hand prints could possibly be from the Khoikhoi It was originally believed that the reasons for these numerous paintings and engravings were to be found in man's innate desire to express himself in some way - art for art's sake - or in the need to exert some form of magical control over the animals portrayed in art. Current research has shown that a great deal of this art is related to the trance-dancing which formed, and indeed still forms, an important part of the San response to environmental pressures. The medicine man in trance was the important link between the world of the spirits and the everyday world in which the people live. During trance, many duties such as healing of the sick, communication with the spirit world, information gathering and divination, were carried out and were formally communicated to the group through the medium of painting or engraving. The images which the medicine man saw during the trance state were painted on the rock face and do not represent reality in many cases. Thus we find illustrations of men with animal attributes such as horns or hoofs. These does not portray a man in animal skin disguise but represent the imagined change which the medicine man undergoes while in the trance state. Generally, medicine men involved in good deeds were said to adopt the form of one of the antelope - usually the eland, hartebeest or rhebok, while those bent on harming others would adopt the form of one of the large predators.

African Art. The artistic expression and materials used in African art has some of the most variety and creative originality than any other artistic groups
http://www.arthistoryguide.com/African_Art.aspx
African Art
The artistic expression and materials used in African art has some of the most variety and creative originality than any other artistic groups in the world. According to art critics and historians there seem to be 5 main unifying characteristics of African art.
1) Formal innovation: African societies of the past and present encourage diversity and creativity. Unlike some of the Western art societies that follow art guidelines, African art varies from artist to artist, and village to village. Innovation is noticeable all over Africa as well as over time.
2) Visual abstraction: African artwork leans towards the abstract rather than realistic representation. Perhaps this is because African art usually conveys ideas, the supernatural, or spirits – therefore the artwork is creating an idea or portraying a message rather than representing a physical object; hence the abstraction.
3) Sculpture is emphasized: African artists seem to be drawn mostly to 3D art objects / creations rather than 2 dimensional pieces. African paintings and drawings do exist but they are displayed in such a way that the viewer has a more three dimensional experience (ie the painting will be wrapped around a house, rather than simply placed on one flat wall). Additionally, African art includes bright decorative clothing worn during rituals and ceremonies – making the wearer a sculpture or art piece themselves.
4) The performing arts are favored: African art is readily used in theatrical performances, for example, African masks. The mask, the dance, and the message become the art form, and the meaning comes out in the context rather than the actual object. 5) Many meanings: African artists love to convey many meanings and messages in their artwork. One piece of African art can have a multitude of meanings, uses, and contexts, which may often confuse Western art critics and scholars.

African art
From Free net encyclopedia
Image:Makonde elephant.jpg Image:Velour du kasa¯.jpg African art is any form of art or material culture that originates from the continent of Africa . This article discusses primarily visual art; for information on African music, see Music of Africa The arts and material culture of the African continent constitute one of the most diverse and innovative artistic legacies on the planet. Though many casual observers tend to generalize "traditional" African art, the continent is actually full of a multitude of peoples, societies, and civilizations, each with a unique visual culture. Despite this diversity, there does seem to be some unifying artistic themes when considering the totality of visual culture from the continent of Africa. Formal Innovation - Unlike "Western" societies, where artworks tend to be produced according to strict canons of representation, many African societies encourage innovation and creativity of both style and form among their artists. This innovation and diversity can be seen not only across long expanses of time and geography, but also even from village to village. Visual Abstraction - African artworks tend to favor visual abstraction over naturalistic representation. This is because many African artworks, regardless of medium, tend to

THE AFRICAN ART COLLECTION In 1955, the University received the estate of Dr. Alain Leroy Locke (1886-1954) which constituted the core of our classical African art collection. Locke, a spokesperson in the Harlem Renaissance era, was also an avid collector and patron of the arts. Since this initial gift of 365 pieces, the collection has grown through the largesse of many donors from faculty of the University and individual collectors. The most recent gift of 121 pieces comes from Mrs. Robert B. Mayer of Chicago, Illinois, and fills significant gaps in the collection. The Gallery's African art collection includes major categories such as body ornaments, figures and figurines, household items, ceremonial masks, musical instruments, symbols of status and achievement, textiles, tools and implements of work, gold weights, and weapons. Historically, the dates of the collection range from early 18th century through the early 20th century, with Akan gold weights representing the oldest items in the holdings.

Museum for African Art, Queens, New York By Patrick Totty
Before the European colonial era, art among most sub-Saharan Africans was something people created as a matter of course. There were no self-aware, self-defined “artists” – people who did only art. Instead, people created masks, figurines and statues in the normal course of religious and daily life. In some ways, African artisans were like the folk artists of New Mexico – naïve, direct, expressive and unschooled, therefore able to create works of great power. The Europeans did not see it that way at first, dismissing the creations of tribal peoples as primitive and lacking in sophistication. That attitude changed by the early 20 th century when the West had finished exploring the limits of art that was representational in an almost photographic sense. Photography had forced art into a more impressionistic mode, setting the stage for art that was even more abstract and less concerned with the depiction of outer, rather than inner, form.

African Art
African art from Cedarartworld. Yes, Cedarartworld offers a full range of African art. Our products include African paintings, sculptures, African jewelry, home decor accents, pictures, masks and a whole lot more.
We have personal relationships with the African artists, and so chose to see African art from the eyes of the designer, from the eyes of the artist. To appreciate the complex mix of economic situation, inspiration, social inequality, weather and availability of materials on the final work of art, we have to see "African art through African eyes".
With your African eyes, you can see how African art has metamorphosed over the years. You can feel global influence on the style and appearance of artworks from tribal to contemporary African art.
What we do
While in the business of offering unique African art for sale, we strive to promote the works of the African artist in the best ways we can. Participation in exhibitions, representation in other African galleries and shops, placement of exceptional artworks in museums, are part of our publicity routine.
