On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Dance Council, in association with the August Wilson Center for African-American Culture, presented Les ©cailles de la m©moire (The Scales of Memory) at the Byham Theater. The show was a collaborative performance between the New York-based all-female company Urban Bush Women and the Senegal-based all-male Compagnie Jant-Bi. It featured seven dancers from each company. The companies began work on the production in December 2005 with a series of creative residencies hosted by the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography at Florida State University, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and L’Ecole des Sables. The show premiered three years later, opening last month at the University of Florida. Les ©cailles de la m©moire focuses on the themes of resistance, memory, and love — framing them as the common link between the African and African-American cultures. The production also focuses on gender differences and the differences between dancers who share a common ancestry but are historically, geographically, and culturally divided. These differences become apparent at the beginning of the show, when all 14 dancers walk slowly forward, shouting their names and family histories to the crowd. The show closes with a similar act: The dancers shout again and unite as one giant voice.

Get fit while rocking those curves, shaking that toosh, and discovering the culture behind African dance. Even though African dance instructor Mufaro Chakabuda has been living in Canada for seven years, every time she returns from visits home to Zimbabwe, one specific aspect of North American culture never ceases to take her by surprise. Here, in stark contrast to the love of curves woman can relish in Africa, women often feel a pressure to be thin that can gnaw away at their self esteem. "Our hips are celebrated, our curves are celebrated," she says of the African attitude toward women's bodies. "The more curves you have, the better dancer you are. Here, it's the opposite." With her instruction of African dance, Chakabuda hopes to do her best in building that esteem back up again. Many of the movements in the dances she teaches are suited for a woman's figure, moving the body in a way not often encouraged in North America, says Chakabuda, such as with hip, leg and arm expressions. This often comes as a shock to many of her students, but once a woman's feminine curves begin to shine through the movement, she often develops an appreciation for her own body no matter what her shape or size. "You wouldn't think of dance as healing, but it is. You come here and you have an hour of complete solitude and gratitude for your body."
