AFRICAN VIOLET Care
The African Violet is America's most popular blooming houseplant. Well grown violets flower easily and almost continually on the windowsill or under fluorescent light. No other plant is as versatile, adaptable and potentially satisfying as this blooming indoor ornamental. If you pay attention to the basic requirements contained on this sheet, your plants will reward you with flowers throughout the year. Light, ample light, is the single most important requirement of the plant for good bloom. A bright windowsill is best in fall and winter. However, do not allow sun to shine directly on the plant. As days lengthen and sunshine becomes more intense, you may want to shade plants somewhat to avoid to avoid overexposure. A light meter is very helpful in verifying proper intensities. We recommend daytime light intensity in the range of 500 to 1500 foot candles. A good general rule is that MORE LIGHT helps to bring the shy bloomer into flower. Fluorescent light is very satisfactory for violets and related plants, and fluorescent gardens, illuminated with cool white and warm white tubes are best. Lights should be on for 12 or 14 hours and tubes should be 8" or 10" from the tops of the plants. Try to maintain at least 500 foot candles at the plant level. Two fluorescent tubes, each four feet long, are sufficient to light an area four feet long and 18. wide. A general rule is to provide about 15 watts of fluorescent light for each square foot of growing area.

SaintPaulia or African Violet
Botanical name - Saintpaulia Common name - African Violet Description - Perennials grown as houseplants Sunset zone(s) - Houseplant Exposure - Filtered early morning sun, indirect bright light Water requirements - See below General Information - Extremely popular houseplant that will bloom almost continuously with the proper care. African violets have particular soil requirements and pre-mixed African violet potting soil is available. The soil is moisture retaining, but very fast draining. If you have to re-pot an African Violet, it is best to use the pre-packaged soil and keep the roots tight in the pot as African violets bloom well when their roots are crowded. The position of the plant in the house is important, choose a location where temperatures average 60 to 70 Degrees F and there is high humidity. Water African violets from the top or the bottom of the pot, but keep water off the leaves and the crown of the plant. Use room temperature water and wet the soil thoroughly. Do not let the plant stand in water for more than 2 hours. Feed the plants with an African violet fertilizer. If the plant is in need of water, water it prior to fertilizing. Do not fertilize a dry plant.

Restoring a violet that really needs it ... An occasional mutation or "sport"
Welcome through Fred's Garden Gate! At a time in the not-so-distant past, the most favored houseplant was the philodendron . Close behind—but not by much—was the African violet, Saintpaulia. Now, however, the tables seem to have been turned, and the African violet, a relatively easy plant to care for, is unquestionably on top of the list! Saintpaulia began its rise to glory when Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire discovered specimens in the African Usambara District back in 1892. Seeds (or was it plants?) were eventually sent to the Baron's father, an enthusiastic amateur botanist who cultured and later displayed them at the Ghent International Horticultural Exhibit. By 1936, Armacost and Royston, hybridizers in California, had developed ten varieties, several of which form the foundation of today's vast array of

Growing African Violets
Hi everybody. One of the most intriguing and beautiful houseplants is the African violet. These delicate plants are admired by many but a lot of people shy away from purchasing them because they think they are hard to grow. This is not really the case. It is true that they require some attention but then again, most other plants do also. The first step is to decide what plant you would like to bring home. African Violets come in several colors and some varieties have variegated leaves. As with most flowering plants, is a good idea to buy plants that have some buds that not yet have opened. Make sure the leaves look healthy and green. Once you purchase your new plant, you need to transplant it into a different pot. Be sure to choose a pot that is designed for African violets. A regular flowerpot is too deep. Be sure to purchase a potting soil that is designed for African Violets. You also should purchase some small pebbles or stones. You will also need a saucer to place under the pot. After you have purchased your plants and the supplies you will need, it’s time to do the fun part. Fill your African violet pot about half full with soil and place the newly purchased plant centered in the pot. Fill the remainder of the space with more soil. Pat the soil down slightly and then add a little more soil to top off the pot.

Propogating African Violets
African Violets are remarkably easy houseplants to propogate. All you need to do is to take a healthy leaf from near the centre of a plant which is in good flower. Trim the leaf stalk down to about one inch using a sharp knife. Now dab a drop of your own perspiration (human sweat is an excellent rooting compound) on the cut stalk and push firmly into a pot containing a mix of 50% vermiculite and 50% soilless compost. Water and seal the whole lot in a plastic bag until you see lots of young growth. When the new African Violet plantlets are more than one inch tall, split them and plant out into their own pots.

Trailing cultivars and miniatures are also available. Plants kept in good condition flower almost continuously.

A twist to the traditional – African Violets African violets have a reputation for being granny plants...the sort of thing grandmothers everywhere have growing on their kitchen window sill. The retro look is in, so why not take a twist on the traditional and play on "grandma" plants. Mini African violets look as sweet as pie in '50s diner-style milkshake and coffee cups and will look as cute as a button on your window sill. Native to East Africa, they were first successfully cultivated outside their native habitat in 1893. Today they are one of the world's most popular flowering indoor plants. How do you feel about African Violets? They used to make me feel tremendously inadequate as a Master Gardener, since I could never get them to bloom, and I routinely killed them without knowing why. And it seemed like I would see them blooming in the most unlikely, inhospitable places. What the heck was I doing wrong? Over the past few years, I think I finally stumbled on how to keep them going, thanks to lots of advice I've gotten from other Master Gardeners, and at events like the Philly flower show African violet display. Most of the plants I currently have came from that event. One of the biggest improvements came when we installed a whole house humidifier onto our heating system. We put it on for unrelated reasons, but I did find in the winters since that all my houseplants look better. It makes sense, if you think about it, that many of our house plants are native to tropical, rain forest environments, that they don't like dry heat, which is what most homes have. If you don't feel like taking that step, you can use room humidifiers in your plant areas, or mist them lightly. Keep in mind, African violets don't like water directly poured on their leaves. Another change I made was in fertilizing. Most houseplant books tell you not to fertilize houseplants in the winter, since it a kind of downtime for them. But I found the only way to get violets to bloom is with regular fertilizing. I use a very dilute (1/2 or 1/4) strength liquid plant food every time I water them.

      African violets drive me crazy.
African violets drive me crazy. I mean, I like them, when they're not infested with some bug or mildew or something. Now I find that my violets are covered in thrips tiny little bugs that cover the blossoms and deform the leaves. I'm not sure if I want to go to the trouble of spraying them with something toxic, or just throw the whole batch out. I have to admit I'm kind of frustrated with them, it's been one problem after another since the spring. I'm going away for a week, so I may try a lazy way of getting rid of the bugs before I decide to toss everything. I've read that if you put the violets in a garbagage bag with a Vapona no-pest strip (or similar product), it will kill off the bugs. If that's not sucessful, then at least they're already packed and ready to go out on the curb (grumble grumble). discuss Tuesday, 26 August 2003 in
