Agoraphobia
Dr Trisha Macnair Although agoraphobia is thought of as a fear of open spaces, the real underlying fear is more complex, encompassing several aspects of daily life.

What are the symptoms? Who's affected? What's the treatment?
What are the symptoms?
The person feels especially vulnerable and exposed The phobias or fears in agoraphobia involve activities such as leaving home, entering public places or travelling alone. In these situations the person feels especially vulnerable and exposed, with nowhere to escape to or hide if things go wrong. An unusual but not uncommon feature of agoraphobia is a fear of crossing bridges (known as gephyrophobia). This has nothing to do with huge drops from the side of a bridge, but is related to a feeling that, once on the bridge, there is no immediately available exit. The degree of fear and avoidance behaviour varies. Although many sufferers do manage to get out to work, some become completely housebound.

About Me
Robert
I'm a small-time middle-aged businessman with a string of failed romantic encounters and 5 grown-up children, and I'm Marie's husband (she must be mad!). Having an agoraphobic wife isn't that bad - if she's as nice as Marie! When I first met her in 1999, I never imagined that she would give me a second glance! Since I found out that she was interested in me, I've never looked back.

Elinor Ochs
Foreword by Jerome Bruner
Meg Logan has not been farther than two miles from home in six years. She has agoraphobia, a debilitating anxiety disorder that entraps its sufferers in the fear of leaving safe havens such as home. Paradoxically, while at this safe haven, agoraphobics spend much of their time ruminating over past panic experiences and imagining similar hypothetical situations. In doing so, they create a narrative that both describes their experience and locks them into it. Constructing Panic offers an unprecedented analysis of one patient's experience of agoraphobia. In this novel interdisciplinary collaboration between a clinical psychologist and a linguist, the authors probe Meg's stories for constructions of emotions, actions, and events. They illustrate how Meg uses grammar and narrative structure to create and recreate emotional experiences that maintain her agoraphobic identity. In this work Capps and Ochs propose a startling new view of agoraphobia as a communicative disorder.

Definition
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by intense fear related to being in situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing (i.e., being on a bus or train), or in which help might not be available in the event of a panic attack or panic symptoms. Panic is defined as extreme and unreasonable fear and anxiety. According to the handbook used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , fourth edition, text revision, also known as the DSM-IV-TR , patients with agoraphobia are typically afraid of such symptoms as feeling dizzy, having an attack of diarrhea, fainting, or "going crazy." The word "agoraphobia" comes from two Greek words that mean "fear" and "marketplace." The anxiety associated with agoraphobia leads to avoidance of situations that involve being outside one's home alone, being in crowds, being on a bridge, or traveling by car or public transportation. Agoraphobia may intensify to the point that it interferes with a person's ability to take a job outside the home or to carry out such ordinary errands and activities as picking up groceries or going out to a movie.
Description
The close association in agoraphobia between fear of being outside one's home and fear of having panic symptoms is reflected in DSM-IV-TR classification of two separate disorders: panic disorder (PD) with agoraphobia, and agoraphobia without PD. PD is essentially characterized by sudden attacks of fear and panic. There may be no known reason for the occurrence of panic attacks; they are frequently triggered by fear-producing events or thoughts, such as driving, or being in an elevator. PD is believed due to an abnormal activation of the body's hormonal system, causing a sudden "fight-or-flight" response.

Agoraphobia in the Blogosphere Early 2006, like late 1989 , was the year the wall came down. There was a lot of good conversation about gatekeeping in the blogosphere- the much debated phenomenon whereby the bloggers with the largest readership link primarily to each other and guard carefully the door to the elite blogging clubhouse. As a result of these discussions, a lot of people decided the blogosphere should be a free and open place, where new voices would be welcomed and everyone could join in the conversation
Quite a few A-List bloggers did their part to promote and nurture the open blogosphere concept. Some even

59. What Is Agoraphobia?
Brief and Straightforward Guide What is agoraphobia?
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-agoraphobia.htm
What is Agoraphobia?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window If you break down the word agoraphobia , you can quickly see what it means. A phobia is a fear of something. Agora comes from the Greek language, and refers to a place where people meet, or more specifically a marketplace. So agoraphobia is the fear of being in crowded or open spaces. Sometimes agoraphobia is thought of as the fear of being out in the open, but that isn't strictly correct. People suffering from agoraphobia are more often fearful of places where they are crowded in, where getting away would be difficult. A person with agoraphobia may be reluctant to leave their house, but it is usually not simply being outdoors that frightens them. Situations such as being in a crowded building, a long hallway, a large, exposed place, or any unfamiliar territory can be intensely disturbing to someone with agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is most associated with being unable to get to a safe location, or the feeling of being exposed and unprotected. A return to familiar territory may relieve the symptoms of an agoraphobia related panic attack. Symptoms of agoraphobia can range from mild feelings of discomfort or anxiety in large, crowded spaces, to intense fear and panic attacks. Agoraphobia is actually diagnosed differently according to whether the patient experiences panic disorders or not. In fact, many different psychological disorders can share symptoms with agoraphobia, such as social phobia

To attempt an art of public speaking with regard to contemporary poetry seems like a slap in the face of public taste. Is it possible to speak of, or address such a public? If the Cambridge Conference of Contemporary Poetry (C.C.C.P.) institutes the possibility of a republic of letters, what might develop an appropriate form of collective public speaking with which to articulate its diverse voices? Indeed, is there a plausible art or rhetoric of quotation which might articulate such a public without disenfranchising some voices, and which, as if listening to several voices at once, might remain attentive to the unspeakable?
