edit Ancient Origins
Developed independently by geographically distant populations, systematic agriculture first appeared in Southwest Asia in the Fertile Crescent , particularly in modern-day southern Iraq and Syria . Around 9500 BC, proto-farmers began to select and cultivate food plants with desired characteristics. Though there is evidence of earlier sporadic use of wild cereals, it was not until after 9500 BC that the eight so-called founder crops of agriculture appear: first emmer and einkorn wheat , then hulled barley peas lentils bitter vetch ... chick peas and flax By 7000 BC, small-scale agriculture reached Egypt . From 7000 BC the Indian subcontinent saw farming of wheat and barley , attested by archaeological excavation at Mehrgarh in Balochistan . By 6000 BC, mid-scale farming was entrenched on the banks of the Nile River. About this time, agriculture was developed independently in the Far East, with rice , rather than wheat, as the primary crop.

Agriculture Spread over three diverse agro-economic zones Bophuthatswana attached great importance to the agricultural sector to produce food for the nation off its own soil. In the mixed farming zones of the country grains such as maize, sorghum and wheat were cultivated in addition to oil seeds including sunflowers, soya beans and groundnuts. The Taung and Tsholofelo irrigation schemes also helped to produce cotton, wheat and vegetables. This economic sector created rural employment and income by utilising natural resources on which local processing industries could be based. Maize production more than doubled from the time of independence until 1981 when 138 000 tonnes of maize was produced. Other agricultural schemes included intensive dairy and poultry farming, and cattle grazing zones. Although farming, as with other economic activities, was seen as the preserve of private enterprise, the Department of Agriculture took steps to promote an environment for participation by rural communities. Among the bodies which were created to promote agriculture was the Agricultural Development Corporation (Agricor).

The Department of Agriculture (ODA) provides leadership, service, and regulatory functions for food production and processing in Oregon. Its mission has been expanded to provide food safety and consumer protection at all levels of production and marketing, to protect the agricultural natural resource base, and to promote economic development and develop markets for agriculture and food products. The Director of the Department of Agriculture is appointed by the Governor. A ten-member State Board of Agriculture, also appointed by the Governor, serves as an advisory board to the Director. The Department is currently divided into ten divisions that oversee thirty-six chapters of Oregon laws. History
Agriculture is a leading industry in Oregon with over 200 commodities produced. There are at least seven distinct growing areas ranging from dairies along the Oregon Coast to the large dry land wheat farms of the Columbia Basin from the rich soils of the Willamette Valley to the wide open range land of Southeastern Oregon. The history of agriculture in Oregon dates back to the native and early inhabitants of the region. The availability of plentiful agricultural land was a primary reason for the Westward migration in the United States. Early settlers to Oregon began agricultural endeavors soon after their arrival raising grain, fruit, and vegetable crops as well as livestock.

In the Arlington Valley, approximately 450 acres were being irrigated by the Buckeye Canal in 1891. By 1900, this number had increased to 1,750 acres. In the summer of 1899, Moses E. Clanton and W. W. Perry filed notice for an appropriation of 3,000 miners inches of water for the Arlington Canal. Articles of Incorporation were filed with the County Recorder on December 19, 1899 with capital stock listed at $30,000.
[Click to Enlarge] The Arlington Canal Company, was a co-op of landowners in the Arlington Valley who received water from the new canal. Each shareholder owned one share per quarter section, or one hundred and sixty acres. The head of the canal was located to the northeast of the valley and during the winter of 1899 through the spring and summer of 1900 local residents had excavated 19.2 miles of canal irrigating almost all of the arable land west of the Hassayampa River, with the exception of the Tovrea Ranch near PowerÂ’s Butte. By 1904, the Arlington Canal Company needed to widen the bottom of the canal to handle the delivery of water to approximately 5000 acres being irrigated.
An article in the Arizona Republican on June 15, 1900, stated, S. E. Chapin, who is now engaged in the mercantile business at the new town of Arlington, in the lower part of the valley, was in town yesterday. He believes that Arlington is going to be one of the richest and most important points in the valley."
