Dubious "Yeast Allergies"
Stephen Barrett, M.D. Candida albicans (sometimes referred to as monilia) is a fungus normally present on the skin and in the mouth, intestinal tract, and vagina. Under certain conditions, it can multiply and infect the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. Such infections are usually minor, but serious and deeper infections can occur, especially in patients whose resistance has been weakened by immunosuppressant drugs and serious illnesses such as AIDS. However, some practitioners claim that even when clinical signs of infection are absent, yeast-related problems can cause or trigger multiple symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, mood swings, depression, anxiety, dizziness, unexpected weight gain, difficulty in concentrating, muscle and joint pain, cravings for sugar or alcoholic beverages, psoriasis, hives, respiratory and ear problems, menstrual problems, infertility, impotence, bladder infections, prostatitis, and "feeling bad all over." The list of symptoms is similar to that of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS).

Allergies to Your Pet * Notes Links not working at last update In some situations, allergies to your pet can be controlled. Be very careful with asthmatic children though, you might need to find your pet a new home rather than risk your child's health and life, depending of the severity of the allergy. For less serious allergies there are some possible solutions. First and foremost, is keeping your pet clean. You may be lucky enough to have the kind of dog that has a kinder coat for the allergic, such as a poodle. No matter what kind of pet, keeping him clean and groomed, and keeping your living quarters clean will help. It may be possible to live with an allergic pet by separating the pet from the allergic person, such as never allowing the pet into the allergic person's bedroom. Check into the vacuum cleaners with the special HEPA filters too, and use them often. There is also a special product you can use on your pets: From Noofies:
Allerpet-C for cats and Allerpet-D for dogs has helped many allergic friends keep their animals. It's available at pet stores (sometimes the smaller mom-n-pop places are better for this than national chains) and at some vet's offices. It's a liquid - you moisten a paper towel or washcloth with this liquid and wipe your pet down with it once a week. It neutralizes the allergens on the pet's skin and fur. It takes about 3 weeks for it to reach peak effectiveness. It's truly a miracle for some!

Despite the requirement for prior contact with an allergen for sensitization to occur, the majority of peanut allergic children react to their first known peanut ingestion. Evidence suggests that sensitization may occur by contact with allergen through the skin. Individuals thus sensitized may be predisposed to developing peanut allergy, while tolerance to peanut may be induced by oral exposure.
In vitro evidence supports the hypothesis that sensitization to peanut via the skin may be associated with the development of peanut allergy, while oral sensitization may induce tolerance. Such further studies may help to facilitate the diagnosis of peanut allergy.
Consumer attitudes and response to new food allergen labeling
Food allergic consumers (FAC) depend upon clear, accurate ingredient labels. Sam S. Ahn, MD and colleagues with Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY examined FAC's opinions and responses subsequent to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA).

http://www.acaai.org/public/advice/foods.htm
About Food Allergies While an estimated 40 to 50 million Americans have allergies, only one to two percent of all adults are allergic to foods or food additives. Eight percent of children under age six have adverse reactions to ingested foods; only two to five percent have confirmed food allergies. The following information addresses commonly asked questions regarding food allergy. What are symptoms of food allergy?
Allergic reactions to foods typically begin within minutes to a few hours after eating the offending food. The frequency and severity of symptoms vary widely from one person to another. Mildly allergic persons may only suffer a runny nose with sneezing, while highly allergic persons may experience severe and life-threatening reactions, such as asthma or swelling of the tongue, lips or throat. The most common symptoms of food allergy involve the skin and intestines. Skin rashes include hives and eczema. Intestinal symptoms typically include vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, indigestion and diarrhea. Other symptoms can be asthma, with cough or wheezing; rhinitis, often including itchy, stuffy, runny nose and sneezing; and rarely, anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that may be life threatening. Because these symptoms can be caused by a number of different diseases other than food allergy, your allergist-immunologist may want to examine you to rule them out as the source of your problem.

Allergies are generally the body's effort to eliminate something it considers unsuitable. There are different types of allergies. Some of the most common types are: Nasal allergies , and Chronic Allergies . Nasal allergies refer to the interaction of allergens with cells within the lining of the nose. Chronic Allergies are a bit more serious than nasal allergies. An individual with chronic allergies may have nasal allergies and will also start to be affected by nonallergic stimuli. These can include dry air, cold air, smoke, and particles in the air. The individual with chronic allergies can follow the same steps to prevent allergies that a person with nasal allergies can. The main difference is knowing which other allergies affect them. Common allergens include pollens, dust, dust mites, mold spores, and animal dander.

So, keeping everything dry would not help me much at all because the mold has no effect on me. In fact, in some cases increased humidity would help me clear out the congestion. I'd have better luck trying to actively increase the humidity by, say, running a humidifier.

Survey finds severe symptoms can interfere with daily activities
CHICAGO - Allergies can not only make children out of sorts during the day, but can interfere with their sleep, too, researchers reported in a study to be released on Monday. The survey of hundreds of parents and doctors found spring was by far the worst allergy season, according to three-fourths of respondents. Sponsored by Sepracor Inc, U.S. marketing partner of Denmark-based Nycomed Co, the survey found some children's allergy symptoms are severe enough to interfere with sleep and daily activities. Twenty-nine percent of parents whose children had allergies said their children suffer from a lack of sleep, compared with 12 percent of parents whose children did not have allergies. "We have known anecdotally that children are affected by allergy symptoms similarly to adults, but Pediatric Allergies in America offers the first data quantifying the scope of how allergies interrupt a child's productivity, sleep cycle and daily functioning," said Dr. Jay Portnoy, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Forty percent of parents said their children's nasal allergies interfere with school performance, compared to 10 percent of parents whose children did not have allergies.
