Caring for Someone with Alzheimer's
Medical Author: Frederick Hecht, M.D.
Medical Editor: Barbara K. Hecht, Ph.D. Caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease takes its toll. According to the first detailed study ever done of caregivers and the end of life, family members looking after a relative with dementia have higher levels of depression , and greater need for support while they are providing end-of-life care than they do after a period of bereavement . Depression often results when a family caregiver, who endures high levels of stress , is unable to alleviate the suffering of a loved one," said Dr. Richard Schulz, the University of Pittsburgh, who led the study which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine

Because AD is so well-known, it is sometimes an over-diagnosed condition . Other causes of dementia or memory loss symptoms may be overlooked. Other possible diagnoses include normal aging (if very mild symptoms), emotional problems (such as grief fatigue depression , and certain physical medical conditions such as thyroid disease brain tumors multi-infarct disease , or Huntington's disease . In its early stages, a correct diagnosis of AD can also be overlooked itself and misdiagnosed as other conditions such as

Sue Halpern: Can't Remember What I Forgot

from Speaker's Forum Podcast on May 23, 2008
24 views The thought of losing your memory is a scary thing. For many families taking care of someone with Alzheimer's, it's a slow motion tragedy. But if you forget someone's name or where you've put your keys, does that mean you're on the road to an incurable brain disease? And does doing the crossword puzzle really help? Sue Halpern wanted to learn what science actually knows about memory loss. She talked to neuroscientists and got injected with radioactive dye to find out. Her latest book is Can't Remember What I Forgot: The Good News From the Front Lines of Memory Research. Sue Halpern spoke at Town Hall Seattle on May 15, 2008. also in: aging memory remember what ...

In Western society, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. AD causes impairment in intellectual functioning, which is manifested in a decline in memory, difficulty in learning, reduced ability to perform routine tasks, loss of language skills and impairment of judgment. After an insidious start, the disease shows a progressive course in which the patient's intellectual and cognitive functions gradually worsen. Patients suffering from AD often undergo personality changes and experience behavioral problems, leading to a very distressing situation for the patients, their families and caregivers. AD is strongly linked to age. Below age 70, less than 1% of the general population is affected by AD. But by age 90 years, a staggering 30% suffers from AD. As the average age of the Western population is rising, the impact of AD on society will grow further in the coming years.

    CHALLENGES OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Awilda Guadalupe first noticed changes in her mother when she used to visit her back home in Puerto Rico and talk with her on the phone.
By Sandy Bennett Published: October, 2005 Awilda Guadalupe first noticed changes in her mother when she used to visit her back home in Puerto Rico and talk with her on the phone. Her mom, who now lives with Awilda and her husband in Fountain Valley, would repeatedly ask, “How many children do you have?”
Today, the 82-year-old’s memory of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been completely erased and she recognizes Awilda only on some days. As the disease progresses, she won’t remember her at all. Diagnosed four years ago, Awilda’s mother is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
“Her mind is being erased slowly and slowly. And every day it’s a little more,” says Awilda. “It’s a very sad disease. You have a body and no mind.”

    Alzheimer’s Disease
    Description
Alzheimer's Disease is a form of dementia — a neurodegenerative disease that damages the brain's intellectual functions (memory, orientation, calculation, etc.), but usually preserves its motor functions. In Alzheimer's Disease, the mind gradually deteriorates, causing memory loss, confusion, disorientation, impaired judgment and other problems that may affect a person's ability to perform normal daily activities. The type, severity, sequence and progression of mental changes vary greatly. Although usually a disease of later life (generally after the age of 60), it may rarely affect persons as young as age 30. There appear also to be genetic factors that increase the risk of Alzheimer's Disease. Other people possibly at risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease are those with a history of head injury, of the female sex and those of a lower educational level. Although these risk factors often make headlines in the popular press, the possible additional risk is not high, and the evidence not very strong. In the earliest stages of Alzheimer's Disease short-term memory is affected, and the patient finds it hard to learn and retain new information. Eventually, older or distant memory is lost gradually, and it becomes difficult to recover memories of events and people from earlier life. Next, other symptoms such as difficulty in putting thoughts into words, difficulty in carrying out simple directed acts and difficulty in recognizing well-known faces or objects may develop.
