Mercury Amalgam Toxicity
Your next visit to the dentist may not be as innocent as you think
by Jim O'Brien
Charles Williamson, M.D., co-director of the Toxic Studies Institute in Boca Raton, Florida and colleague, Jordan Davis, M.D., sat down with Life Extension magazine for an in-depth interview on the problem of mercury toxicity caused by dental fillings. Unlike past treatments of this subject, the two physicians spoke from a clinical, medical and scientific-not a dental-perspective.
The issue of mercury toxicity is a delicate one. For decades, most people have seen a visit to the dentist and subsequent cavity filling as a necessary and regular procedure. Side effects have not routinely been brought to light, so few have challenged the status quo. Evidence suggests, however, that such an apparently harmless procedure can have detrimental effects.

Preface:
As someone somewhere surely once said, "Sustaining something old inflicts greater pain than creating something new." Now that Amalgam is in its second issue, we can attest to that unknown (and most likely fictional) person's assessment. We should mention, however, that we did not bear the burden of sustaining alone. We would like to thank our faculty advisors Dr. Kearns, Dr. Bloom, and Dr. Aley for vetting and editing the submissions. We would also like to thank Dean Glassman and the Liberal Arts Council for supporting and funding the issue for the second year in a row. In our second issue, we offer an even more varied selection than last year. In the first essay, Michael Phegley discusses the future of Haynie's Corner a former refuge for Evansville's "hippie" counterculture

Guide for Dentists for Managing Mercury and Amalgam Wastes
On September 17, 2002 New York State enacted Chapter 506, Laws of 2002. This law added a new section 27-0926 to the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL), "Use and recycling of elemental mercury and dental amalgam by dentists." The law bans the use of non-encapsulated elemental mercury in dental offices and requires dentists to recycle any mercury or dental amalgam waste generated in their offices in accordance with regulations established by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The adoption of ECL 27-0926 and the authorization to develop regulatory standards for dentists places New York State with a growing number of local and state governments, as well as Canada and Western Europe, which have enacted successful regulations for dental offices to curtail the release of mercury. Dentists are required to comply with the law starting March 16, 2003. DEC has adopted 6 NYCRR Part 374-4, effective May 12, 2006, this will assist dentists with implementation.
Health Advisories
Mercury is a persistent, bioaccumulative toxin that can cause damage to the human brain and nervous system. It is especially harmful to a developing human child. Significant mercury contamination of the environment has already occurred over the years from the various sources of mercury. Consequently, there are numerous health advisories for fish consumption throughout New York State, due to mercury contamination.

FDA review dental amalgam
The American Dental Association (ADA) has reaffirmed its position that dental amalgam is a safe and effective cavity-filling material, in written testimony to a two-day joint panel meeting of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the testimony, the ADA does not advocate for the use of one dental material over another, however it champions the principle that patients and their dentists should have access to the full range of safe and effective options for treating dental decay. The purpose of the FDA meeting was to gather facts and opinions in this periodic review of the dental filling material, and the FDA has combined the expertise of the Dental Products Panel of the Medical Device Advisory Committee with the neurology expertise of the Peripheral and Central Nervous System Drugs Advisory Committee to consider the peer-reviewed scientific studies on dental amalgam and any potential neurotoxic effects. Dental amalgam contains elemental mercury combined with other metals such as silver, copper, tin and zinc to form a safe, stable alloy. Because amalgam contains elemental mercury, some groups have raised concerns about its potential health effects and questioned its continued use in dentistry. Dental amalgam has been used for generations to fill decayed teeth that might otherwise have been lost to decay.

HOME Health Dental Risk Page CANCER Page Amalgam Replacement Protocol PATIENT PROTECTION First in every concerned doctor's mind is the protection of the patient from additional exposure to mercury. This is especially true of the mercury toxic patient. The mercury toxic patient may have been exposed to varying amounts of mercury from diet, environment, employment or from mercury/silver dental fillings. All forms are cumulative and can contribute to the body burden. The goal of this preferred procedure is to minimize any additional exposure of the patient, ourselves, or staff to mercury.
During chewing the patient is exposed to intraoral levels which are several times the EPA allowable air concentration. During the removal or placement of amalgam the patient can be exposed to amounts which are a thousand times greater than the EPA allowable concentration.

Amalgam Plugin defines a blending of pictures, windows and custom widgets allowing the creation of a novel GUI for the Mac and the Windows platforms. For example, you can create a mac user interface on windows, or a windows interface on the mac. The Drawable class is compatible with a variety of usages, including the generation of alpha-aware pictures on your desktop that are not confined to a particular window: In the above example, a number of pictures have been stashed together, and some of these pictures act as widgets, i.e. are mouse aware.
Version notes for this release:
  • [new]: Amalgam is now defined as a blending engine of pictures, windows and custom widgets allowing creation of a novel GUI for the Mac and the Windows platforms.
  • [new]: Previously, Drawable had two different constructors associated with two different Draw methods. In this release Drawable is a class that does not define events and takes one constructor with two arguments. The first argument should be a valid picture, the second argument can be nil, a Drawbar or a Window.
  • [new]: Drawbar is a subclass of Drawable, defines events, (in previous versions these events belonged to Drawable) and the constructor of this class takes position arguments in addition to an optional window argument.

Laboratory Evaluation of Amalgam Separators P.L. FAN , H. BATCHU, H.N. CHOU, D. RAKOWSKI, W. GASPARAC, C.L. MIAW, and J. SANDRIK, American Dental Association, USA Objectives: Ten amalgam separators were tested using ISO Standard 11143. Methods: 10 g of amalgam particles conforming to the particle size distribution in the ISO Standard were introduced with 1L of water into the amalgam separator along with additional water to reach manufacturer's specified flow rate. The effluent from the amalgam separator was collected and filtered through pre-weighed filters (12 µm, 3 µm, 1.2 µm). The filters, with the retained amalgam particles, were dried to constant weight. Amalgam separator efficiency was calculated from the amount of amalgam retained on the filters. We also determined the concentration of mercury from intentionally digested amalgam in the filtrate (1.2 µm filter and 0.45 µm filter) using chemical analysis. Results: The amalgam separator efficiencies are: Amalgam Collector 99.89 (0.06%), Asdex 99.10 (0.09%), BullfroHg 98.88 (0.64%), Durr 7800 97.66 (0.35%), ECO II 97.51 (0.74%), Hg 5 98.28 (0.10%), MRU 99.95 (0.04%), MSS 2000 98.94 (0.06%), Rasch 890-4000 99.90 (0.03%), RME 2000 99.66 (0.24%). ANOVA and Tukey tests showed no difference (p<0.05) among MRU, Rasch 890-4000, Amalgam Collector, RME 2000, Hg 5 and Asdex or among Hg 5, Asdex, MSS 2000, and BullfroHg. Durr 7800 and ECO II are different from all other separators. The t-test on the efficiency of each separator tested "empty" and "full" showed no significant difference (á=0.05) except for MSS 2000. Mercury concentrations in the chemically digested amalgam effluent filtrate ranged from 1 ppb to >7000 ppb and varied extensively for each separator.
