Amaryllis is a monotypic (only one species) genus of plant also known as the Belladonna Lily or naked ladies . The single species, Amaryllis belladonna , is a native of South Africa , particularly the rocky southwest region near the Cape. It is often confused with the Hippeastrum , a flowering bulb commonly sold in the winter months for its propensity to bloom indoors
edit Characteristics
Amaryllis belladonna It is a bulbous plant, with each bulb being 5-10 cm in diameter. It has several strap-shaped, green leaves , 30-50 cm long and 2-3 cm broad, arranged in two rows. The leaves are produced in the autumn or early spring in cold climates and eventually die down by late spring. The bulb is then dormant until late summer. In late summer (August in zone 7) each bulb produces one or two naked stems 30-60 cm tall, each of which bear a cluster of 2 to 12 funnel-shaped

web host by clicking on the side banner. Their service is cheap and reliable. Now on to the good stuff!
PLANTING RECOMMENDATIONS
Amaryllis bulbs can be purchased at your local nursery, or sold in kits complete with soil and pot. The only time I can recommend buying a kit is if they are on super clearance sale, and you can pick them up for $5 or less. I say this because the included soil is poor and the pot is usually a cheap plastic throwaway that will tip over with the slightest provocation. Use quality materials and you will not be disappointed.
The Basics, or "What's In a Pot?"
Let's start with the pot. You should use a sturdy clay pot that leaves 1 or 2 inches space between the pot and the bulb. Let's use a concrete example for illustrative purposes. Say you have a bulb that is 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Your pot should then be 5 1/2 inches, or to use a standard size, 6 inches. Do not use a pot that is sharply tapered or very shallow because you want room for decent root growth. ** UPDATE ** This year, as an experiment, I am trying potting in much larger pots. As an example, if you get a really nice bulb the size of a large orange, try potting it in a 10"-12" pot. It has come to my attention that keeping the amaryllis pot-bound will keep it from producing off-shoots, but if you want a showy display in a few years, then pot the bulb in a large pot and eventually it will grow many "baby bulbs" which will fill the pot up! We will keep you posted on how this experiment turns out.

Amaryllis
Paul A. Thomas, Extension Horticulturist The large, bell-shaped or lily-like flowers of the amaryllis and its hybrids make excellent garden subjects and pot plants. They can be grown as garden plants from Macon southward in Georgia. In these areas, they are used in beds, borders and for specimen plants. In north Georgia, they make excellent pot plants and spring and summer garden plants. When used as individual specimens, in mass plantings, as part of perennial borders or as low plantings in front of shrub borders, amaryllis provide spectacular flower effects. They have a wide range of flower colors from red, pink and white to combinations of these. Their large, robust flowers of beautiful textures add to their appeal. When properly handled and cared for properly, an amaryllis bulb may produce flowers for up to 75 years. Good quality bulbs of named varieties may produce up to six flowers on a single stalk.
Growing in Containers
When grown in containers, amaryllis prefer a sandy-loam soil mix. You can mix your own by combining one part leaf mold or composted manure, one part loamy soil, and one part coarse sand. Some garden centers also sell soil mixes especially for bulbs. The mixture should be slightly acid, with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.

Amaryllis
Sydney Park Brown and Robert J. Black Hippeastrum x hybridum) is native to South Africa and belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family.
Landscape Uses
In most regions of the United States, amaryllis must be grown as potted plants in the home or greenhouse. However, in Florida they are grown outdoors all year and make excellent garden plants.
Amaryllis has the greatest landscape impact when grown in clumps of 10 plants or more of the same color. Use them as a foundation planting against nearby evergreen shrubbery. Bright flower colors should be used against dark house colors and shrubbery; dark flower colors display best against white or light backgrounds. Other uses for amaryllis include plantings in terraces, in tree islands, on slopes, near a gate entrance, and in borders.
Planting
Plant amaryllis bulbs anytime between September and January. Amaryllis does best in light shade such as under pine trees. In heavy shade, they will be thin and spindly and flower poorly.
Amaryllis requires well-drained soils. If the site does not drain properly, create a raised bed to provide improved drainage. Till the soil and amend with a 3- to 4-inch layer of organic matter such as peat or compost and 2 to 3 pounds of 6-6-6, or an equivalent amount of other complete fertilizer per 100 square feet of bed. Slow-release forms of mineral or organic fertilizer are best to minimize leaching of nutrients into water resources. The amended soil should be leveled and moistened.

AMARYLLIS: YEAR-ROUND CARE
A popular indoor plant in the winter and spring is the amaryllis, with large lily-shaped flowers on tall stems. They are becoming a popular holiday gift. As a bulb, it shares some care and growth methods used with other bulbs. However, because of its background as a tropical plant, and bloom cycle, there are differences. The bulb is NOT winter hardy in upstate NY, so would not survive planted outdoors, as would tulips, daffodils, etc. The amaryllis is for indoor blooms on a yearly cycle. With proper care, the bulb will flower again each year.
ESTABLISHING THE NEW BULB
The bulb does not require pre-cooling to be forced, as do daffodils and tulips. Newly purchased bulbs should be kept in a cool, dry location with air circulation until they can be planted. The bulb must NOT be frozen! If the bulb is not already potted when purchased, one should choose a pot about half-again as wide as the bulb. This is done because the bulb prefers to be pot bound, with no more than 2 inches from the side of the bulb to the wall of the pot. A normal bulb fits in a 6 to 8 inch diameter pot. The pot MUST have drainage hole(s) in its base. Pot the bulb with good, sterile planting medium so that the top third of the bulb (including its 'neck') is above the soil. This ensures that no water placed on the surface of the soil will go down into the bulb's neck. It is not necessary to cover the top of the bulb completely with soil - all the 'action' takes place at the base and roots. It is NOT necessary to put fertilizer or other supplements such as bone meal with the bulb, but if desired, a general purpose bulb fertilizer may be placed under the bulb ( 1/2 teaspoon fertilizer mixed with the dirt under the bulb - no fertilizer touching the bulb).

    Culture:
Soil Mix and Container: Amaryllis can be potted or repotted anytime after the plants have gone through a dormant or rest period which is in fall or winter. Late November is considered to be an ideal time. Plant the bulb in a container that is one to two inches larger in diameter than the base of the bulb. Potted bulbs thrive under conditions in which they are slightly rootbound. Containers can be either clay or plastic, and they must have drainage holes in the bottom. Plant in a well-drained, sterilized potting medium with a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5. A mixture containing equal parts peat and perlite is excellent.

How to Make Your Amaryllis Bloom Again Amaryllis have become increasingly popular holiday gift plants, undoubtedly because the bulbs bloom very freely indoors and they are affordable. The large, showy flowers make a bold statement and are available in an increasing variety of colors, shapes, and sizes that fit almost any taste. Amaryllis are not difficult to grow and may be brought into bloom every year if the plants are treated correctly. To understand the process, it may help to understand the plant and its native environment. Amaryllis are bulbs of the genus Hippeastrum that are native to tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas. Some species grow in rock crevices in savannas that have distinct dry and wet seasons; others grow in high plateau regions that have cool weather for most of the year. One species from Brazil is epiphytic and grows in trees in montane forests with no soil around the roots. Many species have been hybridized to produce today's hybrids, and most of these species experience warm, humid conditions with abundant rainfall for most of the year and a short, cooler dry season. To make your amaryllis bloom again, you simply have to mimic the conditions that nature provides. Here's an easy step-by-step plan to get your amaryllis to bloom again: 1. Keep it cool through the holidays.

Part 1 General Aspects The Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is a true bulb that originated in the tropical areas of South America. Thus, it is a tender bulb. It performs best when grown under warm (70 to 75 o F) temperatures for 9 to 10 months to promote flowering and vegetative growth, followed by 2 to 3 months of either cool (55 o F) dry storage or cool (55 o F) growing conditions. The use of one of the latter conditions is required to promote reflowering of the bulb. Most marketed bulbs sold are greater than 8 inches (20 cm) in circumference, and are either Dutch, Israeli, or South African-grown. They produce 2 to 6 flowers per floral stalk, with the average being 4. Very large bulbs normally produce 2 flower stalks. Flower colors are red, white, pink, orange, salmon, and bicolored (mostly whites with pink or red flushes). Plant heights range from 18 to 36 inches depending on the cultivar, the country in which the bulb was produced, and home forcing conditions. Part 2 Indoor Growing of New or Replanted Bulbs Planting Plant in a well-drained, pH 6 to 6.5, sterilized potting medium. Do not use a medium that contains pine bark! An equal mixture of peat and perlite is excellent. Use a standard-depth (6-inch diameter) pot that has adequate drainage holes. Carefully plant the bulb, with 1/3 being above the rim of the pot.
