EDITIONS:

Note that Bloomsbury have continued the successful straight-to-trade-paperback strategy they began with Mr. Hoban's previous novel, Angelica's Grotto, so as yet there is no hardcover edition of Amaryllis.
AVAILABILITY
Amaryllis Night and Day can be ordered from Bloomsbury's own Web site (just search the title or "Russell Hoban"), or via Amazon UK . Unfortunately, it hasn't been released in the US yet, but US readers can order copies via Web from the aforementioned sites.
DESCRIPTION:
More than one member of The Kraken has expressed the view that Amaryllis is Russ's best book since Fremder , and I'd have to throw my cap in that corner, too. Amaryllis is a graceful return to the magical realism that characterized books like The Medusa Frequency and The Lion of Boaz-Jachin and Jachin-Boaz, Here's the copy from the jacket: The first time Peter Diggs saw Amaryllis she was at a bus stop where the street sign said BALSAMIC although there was nothing vinegary about the place. The bus was unthinkably tall, made of yellow, orange and pink rice paper and bamboo, lit from within like a Japanese lantern. That was a dream, but where this romance goes as the dream begins to intersect reality (not unlike a Mobius strip) is nothing that a reader can quite prepare for.

How to Grow and Care for Amaryllis Flowers
Type: Flowering Bulb Latin Name: Liliaceae/Amaryllidaceae So just why do so many people enjoy growing Amaryllis indoors? That's easy! First, they are an easy bulb to grow. Forcing Amaryllis to bloom indoors is a snap. Many garden stores carry them boxed, potted and ready to grow by just adding water. Second, they have big, bright, trumpet shaped blooms cheering up the indoor winter scene. And, third, many people need to grow something during the long winter. For gardeners, winter can be long. growing indoor plants help us to get through the long off season. The word Amaryllis comes from the Greek word for "sparkling". And they do just that, brightening up a spring lawn, or adding color indoors on a cold, drab winter's day. Big, cheerful, trumpet shaped blooms come in red, pink, yellow and a few combinations of these colors. A single flower blooms six to eight weeks after planting. Plants can grow up to two feet. Amaryllis can be grown outdoors in frost free areas. They also can be grown in colder regions. In cold regions, pull up the bulbs before winter, and store them until spring.

A trial consultant in Tucson, Arizona, Calla Gentry devotes her time and energy to victims in civil cases rather than criminal trials. The rape and near murder of her sister, Amaryllis, has done much more than affect Calla's career; she hides behind locked doors and jumps at shadows, a veritable victim by proxy after Amaryllis is left in a coma following a failed suicide attempt.
When Calla is assigned against her will to the trial of Raymond Cates, a wealthy landowner's son accused of rape and first degree murder, she cannot help but note the parallels between the crime he stands accused of and her sister's assault. Determined to uncover the truth, Calla begins an investigation of Cates and the events of that fateful night. But things are seldom what they seemand Calla's investigation leads her to buried lies and a whole new world of violent rage.

Background Information:
I give each group of two students a mature amaryllis bulb. They are given pots and soil with minimal planting instructions. Their overall task is to raise the next generation of amaryllis, which appeals to them as they are the next generation. I require that they keep a log noting timing and amounts of water and fertilizer, growth of bloom stem and leaves in cm, and any other information that they choose, such as sun and temperature conditions. When the flowers open, they are to transfer the pollen from the male parts to the female part of the flower by hand. Some of my classes predict whether self-pollination or cross-pollination with another plant with the same or different colored flowers will produce the most seeds. They must improvise to find ways to mark flowers and prevent further pollination. The seeds mature in the ripening ovary over the next few weeks. When the ovary splits it is time to count the seeds and plant them. Number of seeds and germination rates are recorded. When the seedlings appear, I tell them that they have passed "plant." Students are allowed to take their seedlings home if they wish. I take the mature bulbs and seedlings home and plant them in my garden for the summer and bring them in after the first frost to dry for January planting. This keeps the cost down. It takes three years to produce a bulb that will flower.

  • Exotic amaryllis - splendid blooms for winter
Amaryllis, also known as Hippeastrum, is one of the most impressive flowering bulbs you can grow indoors as a houseplant. It's the perfect plant for bringing a welcome burst of bloom into your house during the winter. The flowers are large and trumpet-shaped and come in lovely shades ranging from white and apple-blossom pink to scarlet; some even have striped petals, as in the pictures below.
Amaryllis bulbs are easy to grow
Amaryllis 'Nymph' Hippeastrum flowers may look exotic, but they are easy to grow. When you buy a bulb, look for a large, plump one with some roots attached. Using a pot that's slightly larger in diameter than the bulb, plant it in potting soil, leaving the "shoulders" - the top third of the bulb - exposed. Place the bulb in bright light and watch for growth to resume. You should see a flower bud appear after a couple of weeks. Turn the pot regularly so the flower stalk won't lean in one direction. The flowers can be quite top-heavy, so sometimes they need support from a slim bamboo stake and raffia ties.

    Released: 12-18-97 B. Rosie Lerner
Extension Consumer Horticulture Specialist If you're shopping for a striking gift for that special gardener, the amaryllis may be just what you're looking for. The amaryllis is a tender bulb that can't survive outdoors even in the mildest Indiana winters. But it can be grown indoors to provide a dramatic show of color during dreary winter months. The showy flowers range from crimson, scarlet, rose, lavender, white or bi-colored combinations. Although each plant may only produce one cluster of two to four blooms, individual blossoms can reach up to 8 inches in diameter at their peak. The flowers are borne on a tall, stout stem about 2 feet tall. If you want the plant to be in bloom in time for the holiday, buy one that is already in bud or just beginning to flower. The blooms will last longer if you keep the plant in a cool location, around 65 degrees F. If kept in warmer environments, the flower stalks may become weak and require staking to support the weight of the blossoms. If you opt instead for an amaryllis bulb kit, you just might have blooms in time for Valentine's Day! Bulbs should be potted containers that are only a little larger in diameter than the bulbs themselves. Be sure containers provide drainage so excess water can escape. Pour a layer of good-quality potting soil mix into the bottom of the container, then place the bulb so that the pointed end is facing up. Water thoroughly to establish good bulb-to-soil contact. Then place in a sunny windowsill in a cool location, preferably, 55-65 degrees F. The plants should bloom within six to eight weeks.

The lily-like leaves are parallel-veined (fig. 4A), and from them rise flower stalks that bear small white blossoms all on one side. The flowers are bell-like and fragrant and rarely develop into the red to orange-red berries.
Hippeastrum vittata (amaryllis, amaryllid family). A houseplant (fig. 4B) that blooms in only a few weeks after forcing in the wintertime. At first one or two 1 to 3 feet tall, naked stalks appear, each bearing from one to four large, six-petaled, red, blue, white, or bicolored flowers. Later several sword-shaped, fleshy leaves develop from the base of the plant.
Hyacinthus spp. (hyacinth, lily family). These potted or garden plants grow from a 1 to 2 inch diameter bulb (fig. 4C). The 8 to 12 inch long leaves are narrow, somewhat trough-shaped, and fleshy. The small fragrant, white, pink, or blue lily-like flowers are borne on a leafless stalk that is taller than the leaves.

    http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantab/amarylbella.htm
    Amaryllis belladonna L.
    Family: Amaryllidaceae
Common Name: belladonna lily, March lily, naked lady
Amaryllis belladonna grows in the South Western Cape. The bulb is typically large, brown and rounded and has a moderate growth rate. The large clusters of scented, trumpet-shaped pink or white flowers are carried on a long purplish-red and green stem appearing 50cm above the soil. Up to twelve flowers are produced from the flowering stem. These flowers are 10cm long and apically flare open about 8cm. Protruding from each flower is a long upturned style amongst a group of large curved anthers. The anthers are black and shiny at first, but split open to reveal masses of sticky white pollen. The inflorescence tends to face the direction that receives the most sun. Although most flowers are pale pink, white and dark pink forms occur. The strap-like leaves are deciduous and are produced after flowering. The leaves remain green throughout the winter period. The leaves produce a starch, which is stored in the bulb. In summer the leaves die back and the bulb becomes dormant. This strange phenomenon of flowering before the leaves appear is known as hysteranthy. The belladonna lily's specific flowering time is late summer, February and March.

How to Grow An Amaryllis... It's not just a Christmas flower
    Hippeastrum
    October 10, 1999
Nothing can break the gloom, like a bloom in the dead of winter.
Of all of the flowering bulbs, the Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is the easiest to force into bloom. The large, (up to six inch blooms) showy flowers, and ease with which they can be grown in the home make the Amaryllis extremely popular as a gift plant during the holiday seasons. The Amaryllis comes in many beautiful varieties including shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange. There are also many multicolored varieties, combining shades of pink or red with white.
The Amaryllis is a tender bulb which originated in the Andes mountains of South America. Therefore, unfortunately, it can only be grown outdoors, year round in USDA zones 9-11 . In other zones, the potted plants may be moved outdoors after the danger of frost has passed but must be brought back indoors in September.
Amaryllis may be purchased as individually packaged or bulk bulbs, but more often are sold in a pre-potted condition. The pre-planted Amaryllis gift boxes normally take no more initial effort than simply watering them with room temperature water to bring them into growth. Avoid getting water on the nose of the bulb. Keep the potting medium moist, but not wet.
