Belladonna Lily
Amaryllidaceae
Amaryllis belladonna , or Belladonna Lily, is a true amaryllis native to South Africa. It is a bulbous plant with dull green leaves that are up to 1½ feet (45 cm) tall by 0.75 inch (2 cm) wide. Leaves appear in early spring and then die back. They are hardy from USDA zones 7-10. Blooming Time: In the greenhouse: early August; in zone 7, long after the foliage has long disappeared. Plants form lovely trumpet shaped flowers on 1½ foot (45 cm) tall flower stalks. The pinkish-white to rose-red flowers are up to 4 inches (10 cm) long and are mildly fragrant. Culture: Amaryllis belladonna need full sun to partial shade with a well-drained soil. In the greenhouse, we use a soil mix consisting of 2 parts peat moss to 2 parts loam to 1 part sand or perlite. To this soil mix, we add 2 cups of bone meal to each 0.01 cubic yards (0.01 cubic meters or ~1/5 bushel) of soil mix. When the foliage appears in early spring, plants are watered on a regular basis and fertilized only once during this period. After the foliage dies back, water is restricted to once a week. Once the flower stalks begin to appear, the water is stepped up to twice a week until flowering is over. During the winter months, the bulbs are stored at 48°F (9°C) until new growth starts in the spring. In zone 7 landscapes, bulbs should be planted 6 inches (15 cm) deep with a handful of bone meal added to every bulb. Propagation: Amaryllis belladonna is propagated by division of bulbs after flowering or from seed. Fresh seed germinate readily.

Growing the Delightful Amaryllis
H-811 (Revised) December 2000
Ronald C. Smith,
Extension Horticulturist With their prominent stamens, they are an amateur plant breeder's delight, so those who want to experiment ala Gregor Mendel to see what various crosses will yield color-wise couldn't be working with a better plant.

Planting
The large amaryllis bulbs are often purchased in potted kit form with directions included. These potted bulbs require only watering and light to begin growth. Plants which are already growing are available at many flower shops. Plant the bulb so the top one-third to one-half of the bulb is above soil. After planting, water thoroughly and place in a warm, sunny window.

How to Plan Special Flowering Dates
First decide when you want the amaryllis to bloom. The bulbs must be potted up 6 to 12 weeks before that date. For Christmas bloom, start the bulb in October. Begin around Thanksgiving for February Valentine's Day.

Care After Planting
Water thoroughly when the container soil is dry to the touch. Excessive moisture can cause bulb rot. As roots begin to develop and fill the container, the soil will dry more quickly and watering should be adjusted accordingly. In several weeks a flower bud will begin to emerge. The bud will usually, but not always, appear before the foliage. Once the growth of the bud and foliage has begun, rotate the container daily to prevent the plant from leaning toward the light. Plants will occasionally require staking to keep the flower stalk in an upright position. To do so, gently insert a stake into the soil using care not to injure the bulb. Then carefully tie the stalk to the stake. Stakes may also be inserted at planting time.

    Amaryllis for Winter Beauty
The amaryllis is well loved for its ability to produce huge blooms indoors in the middle of winter. It is often used as a holiday plant, with the bulbs being available for purchase in late fall.
Selecting and Caring for the Amaryllis Bulb
When buying a bulb, select one that is at least 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Smaller bulbs will not bloom. Larger bulbs (4 inches) produce better, often developing two flower stalks instead of one. Make sure the bulbs are firm and free of soft spots and discoloration.
Plant the bulbs in a container that has drainage holes. The container should be about two inches bigger in diameter than the bulb. The planting mix should drain well; an equal mix of peat and perlite would be suitable. Plant so that about one third of the bulb shows above the soil level. After planting, the planting mix should be thoroughly watered. Keep the mix consistently moist. The mix should not be saturated. Do not water over the nose of the bulb. If water seeps into the bulb, it may cause it to rot.
Keep the bulb in a warm room (70-75F) during rooting and early stalk development. As the flower buds begin to form, reduce temperatures to about 65F to prolong flowering. The bulb should be kept in a well-lighted area. During flowering, the plant is best kept in bright, but indirect light. This will help prolong flowering.

Better Late Than Never - 2007 Amaryllis
via Morning Glories on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00 The bulb for this amaryllis was given to me by a student family in early December as a Christmas gift. I followed the instructions carefully, but for months it just wouldn't grow beyond the few initial spikes of leaves. I thought perhaps I had over-watered it initially, or hadn't watered it enough. Maybe it was too cold in the indoor garden room. I felt like Charlie Brown and his little Christmas tree: "I've killed it.". . . reBlogged to amaryllis Posted by Beth Reblogged by Old Roses to amaryllis on 2008-04-18, 06:22:42 link to this
