In addition to this inability to preserve new memories, Clive had a retrograde amnesia, a deletion of virtually his entire past.

holding something in the palm of one hand, and repeatedly covering and uncovering it with the other hand as if he were a magician practising a disappearing trick. He was holding a chocolate. He could feel the chocolate unmoving in his left palm, and yet every time he lifted his hand he told me it revealed a brand new chocolate.

The advantages of amnesia
From the Internet to the iPod, technology is bringing rapid advances in memory. What society needs now are new ways to forget.
September 23, 2007 IMAGINE CARRYING AROUND an entire research library on an iPod. Such a feat suddenly seemed feasible as of earlier this month, with the news that IBM physicist Stuart Parkin is close to perfecting an advance called "magnetic random access memory," or MRAM, which will enable us to store exponentially more data on the tiniest of hard drives. Parkin's development, which should reach consumers within a few years, is the latest installment in our eternal quest to preserve and supplement the human memory, which has taken us from the cuneiform slab to the cassette tape to the Ginkgo biloba tablet washed down with the day's first cup of coffee. As digital-storage capacities reach seemingly boundless proportions, however, some thinkers are becoming nervous about the unintended consequences of memory technology. Certainly Google's enormous reserves of user information, stored in dozens of secretive data centers across the world, and the literally photographic memory of the Internet Archive, which preserves billions of defunct Web pages for posterity, are enough to leave anyone rattled. New forms of memory are permanent and accessible from anywhere. As their reach grows, scholars are asking if now - perhaps for the first time in human history - we need to find ways to forget.

How your brain remembers
The injured brain we might hope for a better one, or wish that someone else's wasn't so good. However, like it or not, our memory is an archive of our life's experiences, a personal history that defines who we are and what we are about. The memories we've stored, for better or worse, impact our lives every day. They help us make decisions and guide us as we forge ahead into the future. "Memory" describes processes in several parts of the brain's regions and structures by which experience and information are stored and recalled, both intentionally and automatically. In early development, memory is almost synonymous with learning and contributes to everything from education to judgment to social interactions. According to the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, science is only beginning to understand what happens in your brain when you remember something, but the evidence is that memory involves improving the communication between brain cells. Still unsettled is how information flow between cells improves whether their connection strengthens or the individual brain cells change their properties. by Glenn Greenwald Yet there seems to be no accountability for these pro-war pundits. On the contrary, they continue to pose as wise, responsible experts and have suffered no lost credibility, prominence, or influence. They have accomplished this feat largely by evading responsibility for their prior opinions, pretending that they were right all along or, in the most extreme cases, denying that they ever supported the war. Michael Ledeen, a Freedom Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and a contributing editor to National Review , chose the boldest option. In response to a Vanity Fair article about the swarms of neoconservatives abandoning the administration and the war as both become increasingly unpopular, Ledeen emphatically denied that he backed the invasion in the first place. Writing on National Review National Review On countless occasions, Ledeen called for the invasion to start as soon as possible. Oh the Plantmanity!
Posted by Kate So I did some planting over the weekend as you saw from a previous post. I wanted to save the littlest seedlings until they got bigger so they would have a better chance at survival. I left them out in in partial sun today, and came home to find this. We had thunderstorms while I was out running errands and I lost all of them. All of my tomatoes, peppers and squash are dead. I feel like such a murderer. Like this post? Tell someone!: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. Tags:

Imperial Amnesia By John B. Judis July/August 2004 On October 18, 2003, U.S. President George W. Bush landed in Manila as part of a six-nation Asian tour. The presidential airplane, Air Force One, was shepherded into Philippine airspace by F-15 fighter jets due to security concerns over a possible terrorist attack. Bush's speech to the Philippine Congress was delayed by what one reporter described as “undulating throngs of protestors that lined his motorcade route past shantytowns and rows of shacks.” Outside the Philippine House of Representatives, several thousand more demonstrators greeted Bush, and several Philippine legislators staged a walkout during his 20-minute address. In that speech, Bush credited the United States for transforming the Philippines into a democracy. “America is proud of its part in the great story of the Filipino people,” said Bush. “Together our soldiers liberated the Philippines from colonial rule.” He drew an analogy between the United States' attempt to create democracy in the Philippines and its effort to create a democratic Middle East through the invasion and occupation of Iraq. “Democracy always has skeptics,” the president said. “Some say the culture of the Middle East will not sustain the institutions of democracy. The same doubts were once expressed about the culture of Asia. These doubts were proven wrong nearly six decades ago, when the Republic of the Philippines became the first democratic nation in Asia.”

Amnesia
Amnesia Symptoms Causes Remedy Diet ... FAQ's
Amnesia refers to partial or complete loss of memory. Different types and degrees of amnesia occur in old age and in some mental disorders.
Amnesia symptoms
Person forgets words or names
The most common form of this disease is verbal amnesia. In this condition, the patient forgets words or names. An uncommon form of amnesia is temporary loss of memory, in which a person even forgets his own identity, including his name, age, family background, and any recollection of the past.
Causes of Amnesia
Amnesia Symptoms, Causes, Remedy and Diet
Impairment of brain cells by diseases
The main cause of amnesia is the impairment of brain cells by diseases which affect them directly or indirectly, due to a poor blood supply caused by circulatory diseases.
Psychological causes, weakness of the brain
Poor memory also results from dullness of intellect and weakness of the brain. Many cases are, however, largely psychological in origin. They are caused by anxiety neurosis, resulting from attention-seeking in persons obsessed with their own problems. Temporary loss of memory may result from an injury.

Amnesty's Amnesia
By Anne Applebaum Wednesday, June 8, 2005; Page A21 A few years ago I spent several days sitting in the back of a library in London, reading through newsletters, pamphlets and other accounts of Soviet prison conditions published in the 1970s and '80s by Amnesty International. Sometimes these reports were remarkably detailed, testifying to the extraordinary ability of prisoners to smuggle out their stories. One included the memorable observation that on Sept. 13, 1979, the prisoner Zhukauskas "found a white worm" in his soup. A more harrowing 1987 news release told the story of the hunger strike and prison death of dissident writer Anatoly Marchenko. His widow, denied a death certificate or a proper funeral, wrote his name in ballpoint pen on his makeshift grave. But Amnesty also published more general information about the Soviet political system, the whole of which the state-run media, the courts, the secret police was geared to the suppression of political dissent. This was important work, not least because most Soviet citizens were too frightened to do it. After all, during Joseph Stalin's lifetime, still a recent memory, some 25 million people had been arrested in the Soviet Union, mostly arbitrarily, and placed in thousands of forced-labor camps and exile villages all over the country. Millions died of starvation and overwork. This prison camp system, known as the gulag, cast such a horrific shadow that people were still afraid of it, 30 years after Stalin's death.

Dennis Miller has Amnesia
Posted Jan 29th 2008 6:03PM by Bob Sassone
Filed under: Celebrities Game Show When I first heard that Dennis Miller was going to host a game show, I thought to myself "yeah, I covered that already." But I didn't know that the show I had written about had already ended and this was a new game show he was going to host. The previous one was Grand Slam , the GSN show that pitted former game show champs (like Ken Jennings ) against each other. Looks like that show only lasted one season (hopefully I can catch the reruns), but Miller isn't through with game shows yet. He's going to host the new NBC show Amnesia , which will premiere on NBC in the 1 vs. 100 slot when that show ends its season. The game goes like this: Miller asks you questions from your own life to see how much you know about yourself, and if you do you win...well, I have no idea, but I'm guessing fabulous prizes and/or money. I'd like to be a contestant on this show. I still have no idea what happened to that jacket I bought several years ago. It just vanished one day. Maybe this show can help me find it. Tags: 1 vs. 100
