Hypnosis Study Reveals Brain's 'Amnesia Centers'
ScienceDaily (Jan. 10, 2008) See also: In their experiments, the researchers identified two groups of volunteersthose who were susceptible to hypnotic suggestions and those who were not. They showed both groups a documentary depicting a day in the life of a young woman. A week later, they placed them in a magnetic resonance imaging scanner and induced them into a hypnotic state. In this state, the scientists gave the subjects a posthypnotic suggestion to forget the movie, also giving them a reversibility cue that would restore the memory. Once the subjects had been brought out of the hypnotic state, the researchers tested their recall of the movie, then gave them the reversibility cue and tested their recall again. As expected, the hypnosis-susceptible group showed reduced recall of the movie, compared with the hypnosis-nonsusceptible group. Analysis of the brain scans taken during posthypnotic amnesia and memory recovery revealed distinctive activity differences between the hypnosis-susceptible group and -nonsusceptible group in specific occipital, temporal, and prefrontal areas of the brain. The researchers also detected telltale brain activity changes in the hypnosis-susceptible group as they forgot and recalled memory of the movie. In that group, activity in some brain regions was suppressed during memory suppression, while activity in other regions increased. And during reversal of the posthypnotic suggestion, the susceptible group showed recovery of activity in suppressed regions.

Definition
Amnesia refers to the loss of memory. Memory loss may result from two-sided (bilateral) damage to parts of the brain vital for memory storage, processing, or recall (the limbic system, including the hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe).
Description
Amnesia can be a symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases; however, people whose primary symptom is memory loss (amnesiacs), typically remain lucid and retain their sense of self. They may even be aware that they suffer from a memory disorder. People who experience amnesia have been instrumental in helping brain researchers determine how the brain processes memory. Until the early 1970s, researchers viewed memory as a single entity. Memory of new experiences, motor skills, past events, and previous conditioning were grouped together in one system that relied on a specific area of the brain.

After being informed of the details of his recent legal career, including his opinion that the writ of habeas corpus is not represented in the Constitution and that law enforcement officers do not in fact need warrants to listen to phone calls made by private citizens, Gonzales expressed regret over "whatever it was [he] did" and apologized to anyone he may have inconvenienced by his actions over the past three years. White House doctors say Gonzales' amnesia seems to have been completely eradicated, leaving him dazed, shaken, and unable to explain how he became the chief law enforcement officer of the federal government.

Dissociative amnesia is one type of amnesia. Amnesia is the total or partial inability to recall recent or remote experiences (see Brain Dysfunction: Amnesia ). When amnesia is caused by a psychologic rather than a physical disturbance, it is called dissociative amnesia. Amnesia may also be a symptom of other disorders, such as acute stress disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, or somatization disorder. People with dissociative amnesia usually have one or more memory gaps spanning a few minutes to a few hours or days. However, memory gaps spanning years or even a person's entire life may occur. Most people with dissociative amnesia are aware that they have "lost some time," but some become aware of time loss only when they realize or are confronted with evidence that they have done things that they do not recall. Some people with dissociative amnesia forget some but not all events over a period of time; others cannot recall their entire previous life or forget things as they occur.

Transient global amnesia
ARTICLE SECTIONS
Introduction
Transient global amnesia is a sudden, temporary episode of memory loss that can't be attributed to a more common neurological condition, such as epilepsy, transient ischemic attack, stroke or head injury. During an episode of transient global amnesia, your recall of recent events simply vanishes, so you can't remember where you are or how you got there. You may also draw a blank when asked to remember things that happened a day, a month or even a year ago. You do remember who you are, and you recognize family members and others you have known for a long time, but that knowledge doesn't make your memory loss any less disturbing. When an episode of transient global amnesia is over, you remember nothing that happened while your memory was impaired, and you might not recall the hours beforehand. Otherwise, though, your memory is fine. NEXT: Signs and symptoms

America 'Remembers' Ronald Reagan by Paul Douglas Newman
To remember Ronald Reagan as one of the greatest Presidents of the twentieth century, to replace FDR on the dime with Reagan's profile as Republicans wish to do, we are being asked to forget too much. We are asked to forget Lebanon, where Reagan decided to "cut and run" after hundreds of Marines perished when a suicide bomber invaded their compound. We are asked to forget the arms for hostages deal. We are asked to forget El Salvador, where the right wing ARENA, armed with Reagan money, Reagan weapons, and Reagan military training from the School of the America's at Fort Benning, Georgia slaughtered more than 80,000 civilians in the "War on Communism." We are asked to forget the Iran-Contra Scandal, an event that he evidently "could not recall" in response to more than one hundred questions during the Congressional hearings. We are asked to forget the groundwork laid for nuclear disarmament by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon.

Delegation and trust, Poor me
I'm naive . Flat out naive . A few short months ago, after finishing the writing of Joe's Story, I actually believed that life would become somewhat easier and simpler. Yeah, sure, right. It hasn't happened. All the time I spent writing, that I so naively believed would now be free to do whatever I wanted is gone. Where it went I'm not quite sure. As a matter of fact, it appears that I have even less time now than I did while the writing was going on. I'm beginning to think that someone is playing games with my clocks and have altered the day down to only 22 hours.
For weeks I've planned a day to run away from all responsibilities. Drive off into the sunrise and not return until way after dark has fallen. No paperwork, no telephone, no employees, no itinerary, nothing but me and the open road. A day just for Joe. Didn't happen. Not enough time. Too many things to do that had to be done and nobody else to do them. Where does the time go? I've written lists of things to do, put them on paper and the computer in the order of importance. I've disciplined myself to accomplish those things in a timely fashion. That's what successful people do isn't it? I've read books on the subject. I did it right. Then why, I ask myself, is that stupid list getting longer? At times it seems like I'm going through a maze. Every time I finish a task and it opens a door, on the other side of that door are two more doors to open with two more doors beyond each of those. Oh, poor me! Poor me!
