The body is composed of several functional units called organ systems. Each organ system is a collection of organs that function together to perform a specific job to keep the body healthy. Tissues, and the microscopic units of tissues, the cells, are the building blocks of organs. Tissues include materials such as muscles, nerves and epithelia and connective tissues that bind the other tissues together. Spinal Anatomy and Back Pain
Spinal anatomy is a remarkable combination of strong bones, flexible ligaments and tendons, large muscles and highly sensitive nerves. It is designed to be incredibly strong, protecting the highly sensitive nerve roots, yet highly flexible, providing for mobility on many different planes. Most of us take this juxtaposition of strength, structure and flexibility for granted in our everyday lives—until something goes wrong. Once we're in pain, we're driven to know what's wrong and what it will take to relieve the pain and prevent a recurrence. Many different structures in the spine are capable of producing back pain or neck pain, including:
  • The large nerve roots that go to the legs and arms may be irritated The smaller nerves that innervate the spine may be irritated The large paired back muscles (erector spinae) may be strained The bones, ligaments or joints themselves may be injured

Bivalve Anatomy
Note: Colors have been added to distinguish organs; they are not the natural colors. Clams Clams, such as the northern quahog , are bivalves, meaning that they have shells consisting of two halves, or valves. The valves are joined at the top, and the adductor muscles on each side hold the shell closed. If the adductor muscles are relaxed, the shell is pulled open by ligaments located on each side of the umbo. The clam's foot is used to dig down into the sand, and a pair of long siphons that extrude from the clams's mantle out the side of the shell reach up to the water above (only the exit points for the siphons are shown). Clams, such as the northern quahog, are filter feeders. Water and food particles are drawn in through one siphon to the gills where tiny, hair-like cilia move the water, and the food is caught in mucus on the gills. From there, the food-mucus mixture is transported along a groove to the palps which push it into the clam's mouth. The second siphon carries away the water. The gills also draw oxygen from the water flow. The mantle, a thin membrane surrounding the body of the clam, secretes the shell. The oldest part of the clam shell is the umbo, and it is from the hinge area that the clam extends as it grows.

Anatomy
(Greek, anatome Literally, cutting up, or dissection ; now used to signify the science of the form and structure of living beings. It is a department of biology that is divided into animal and vegetable anatomy. Animal anatomy is further divided into comparative anatomy, that is, the study of different animals for purposes of comparison, and special anatomy which studies the form and structure of a single animal. This last embraces the departments of embryology , the study of the formation of living beings, and morphology , the study of the form and structure. Further important divisions are: physiological anatomy, the study of parts in relation to their functions; surgical or topographical anatomy which considers the relations of different parts, and pathological anatomy which treats of the changes brought on by disease, in various organs or tissues
History: Greek and Latin period
Anatomical knowledge had its beginnings very early in the history of the race. Animal sacrifices led to a knowledge of animal anatomy which was readily applied to man . The art of embalming also necessitated a knowledge of the position of blood vessels and certain organic relations . Even Homer used many terms which indicate a much deeper knowledge of human structures than might be expected thus early. The first real development of
