Cancer Genome Anatomy Project
The Cancer Genome Anatomy Project (CGAP) is an interdisciplinary program established and administered by the National Cancer Institute ( NCI ) to generate the information and technological tools needed to decipher the molecular anatomy of the cancer cell.
From CGAP's inception in 1996, NCBI has been a key participant in bioinformatics planning, data tracking, data archiving, and analytical tool development and implementation. NCBI's role in CGAP has been constantly evolving to meet the demands of changing and expanding raw data sources, as well as the needs of the scientific community.
The information below highlights NCBI's contributions to CGAP. "characterizing genes" NCBI collaborates closely with NCI as the CGAP pipeline generates large numbers of expressed sequence tags (EST), all of which are deposited into dbEST , and subsequently incorporated into UniGene and HomoloGene . Gene-based, manual annotations may also be added via

    Basic Concepts in Optical Microscopy
Modern compound microscopes feature a two-stage magnifying design built around separate lens systems, the objective and the eyepiece (commonly termed an ocular ), mounted at opposite ends of a tube, known as the body tube . The objective is composed of several lens elements that together form a magnified real image (the intermediate image ) of the specimen being examined. The intermediate image is further magnified by the eyepiece. The microscopist is able to observe a greatly enlarged virtual image of the specimen by peering through the eyepieces. The total magnification of a microscope is determined by multiplying the individual magnifications of the objective and eyepiece. This section discusses the basic concepts associated with optical microscopy, including objectives, eyepieces, condensers, stages, magnification, numerical aperture, optical aberrations, and a variety of related topics. Introduction to Microscopy - Microscopes are instruments designed to produce magnified visual or photographic images of objects too small to be seen with the naked eye. The microscope must accomplish three tasks: produce a magnified image of the specimen, separate the details in the image, and render the details visible to the human eye or camera. This group of instruments includes not only multiple-lens (compound microscopes) designs with objectives and condensers, but also very simple single lens instruments that are often hand-held, such as a loupe or magnifying glass.

Might, because TV writers are cruel, and there are plenty of potential soap-opera obstacles in their path. A guide to the many parts of the human eye and how they function. The ability to see is dependent on the actions of several structures in and around the eyeball. The graphic below lists many of the essential components of the eye's optical system. Click a term for more information When you look at an object, light rays are reflected from the object to the cornea , which is where the miracle begins. The light rays are bent, refracted and focused by the cornea, lens , and vitreous . The lens' job is to make sure the rays come to a sharp focus on the retina . The resulting image on the retina is upside-down. Here at the retina, the light rays are converted to electrical impulses which are then transmitted through the optic nerve , to the brain, where the image is translated and perceived in an upright position!

    Heart
Torso Head Arm ... Blood The Cardiovascular System Your heart and circulatory system make up your cardiovascular system. Your heart works as a pump that pushes blood to the organs, tissues, and cells of your body. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to every cell and removes the carbon dioxide and waste products made by those cells. Blood is carried from your heart to the rest of your body through a complex network of arteries, arterioles, and capillaries. Blood is returned to your heart through venules and veins. If all the vessels of this network in your body were laid end-to-end, they would extend for about 60,000 miles (more than 96,500 kilometers), which is far enough to circle the earth more than twice! The one-way circulatory system carries blood to all parts of your body. This process of blood flow within your body is called circulation.

RANTS Anatomy of a WebLog Next Rant Published: 1.26.99 Last Rant Anatomy of a Weblog Weblog. A few months back, I heard the term weblog for the first time. I'm not sure who coined it or where it came from, so I can't properly credit it. Typically, a weblog is a small web site, usually maintained by one person that is updated on a regular basis and has a high concentration of repeat visitors. Weblogs often are highly focused around a singular subject, an underlying theme or unifying concept. I asked on my own personal web site, "Is Camworld a weblog?" A guy named Michal (Sabren) answered. "Yep." I stood back a few steps and realized that yeah, Camworld is a weblog or a microportal. It's got all of the aspects commonly associated with weblogs. It's updated regularly [daily]. It's got a nice, clean easy-to-use design and user interface. It doesn't patronize to the end user, dumbing things down too much. It has a theme [Random Thoughts + Web Design + New Media]. It has a way for the users to interact with each other [ a mailing list ]. It even has somewhat of a community, maintained by repeat visitors and list members who contribute many of the links often found in Camworld.
