    Symptoms
Symptoms of anemia vary depending on the severity of the condition. Anemia may occur without symptoms and be detected only during a medical examination that includes a blood test. When they occur, symptoms may include:
    • Weakness and fatigue are the most common symptoms of even mild anemia. Even iron deficiency without anemia can reduce working capacity in some people. Shortness of breath on exertion Rapid heartbeat Lightheadedness or dizziness Headache Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) Irritability and other mood disturbances Pale skin (however, healthy-looking skin color does not rule out anemia if a patient has risk factors and other symptoms of anemia) Iron deficiency, even at a level too mild to cause anemia, has been linked to restless legs syndrome (RLS) in some people. Some studies have reported RLS in 25 - 30% of people with low iron levels. Studies suggest, in fact, that RLS in some people may be due to impaired iron acquisition in cells that regulate dopamine in the brain. Dopamine abnormalities are known to play a role in RLS. Mental confusion Loss of sexual drive

It is a decrease in the amount of red cells in the blood caused by having too little iron. Iron deficiency anemia is usually caused by a diet insufficient in iron or from blood loss. Blood loss can be acute as in hemorrhage or trauma or long term as in heavy menstruation. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia. About 20% of women, 50% of pregnant women, and 3% of men are iron deficient. Some people with iron deficiency anemia always feel cold. They feel cold because iron plays a role in regulating the body's temperature. Iron deficiency anemia and sickle cell anemia are VERY DIFFERENT. Individuals with iron deficiency anemia may also experience pica What is Iron?

Anemia
What You Need to Know
If a woman has anemia, the number or size of her red blood cells are below normal. Anemia is common in pregnancy. Red blood cells carry oxygen around your body and to your baby. It's important to prevent anemia before, during and after your pregnancy. Usually, a woman becomes anemic because her body has too little iron. Iron is a mineral that helps to create red blood cells. Iron deficiency affects half of all pregnant women. The recommended amount of iron you need each day increases during pregnancy from about 18 milligrams (mg) per day to 27 mg per day. Most pregnant women get this amount from eating foods that contain iron and taking prenatal vitamins that contain iron. Some women need to take iron supplements to prevent iron deficiency. Unless your anemia is severe, it is unlikely to harm your baby. But iron deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of preterm birth and low birthweight . Anemia can also make you feel more tired than usual during your pregnancy. What You Can Do to Prevent Anemia
You will probably be tested for anemia at least twice during your pregnancy: during your first prenatal visit and then again between 24 and 28 weeks. If you are anemic, your health care provider may prescribe an iron supplement. You can help lower your risk of anemia by eating foods that contain iron during your entire pregnancy. These foods include:

FDA Issues Labeling Changes for Drugs That Boost Red Blood Cells In November 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made several changes to the prescribing labels for erythropoiesis-stimulating drugs. These drugs epoietin alfa (Epogen, Procrit) and darbepoetin alfa (Aranesp) increase the production of red blood cells. They are used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney failure, cancer chemotherapy, and antiretroviral HIV therapy. The new labels have stronger warnings and updated dosing-related safety information. The FDA advises:
  • For cancer, erythropoiesis-stimulating drugs are used only to treat anemia associated with chemotherapy. Dosing should increase hemoglobin levels to no more than 12 g/dL. These drugs can shorten survival time and increase tumor growth when hemoglobin levels are raised beyond this point. Treatment should stop as soon as chemotherapy is completed. Erythropoiesis-stimulating drugs are not safe or appropriate for all patients undergoing chemotherapy. Patients should discuss the risks and benefits with their oncologists. For chronic kidney failure, erythropoiesis-stimulating drugs should be used to maintain a hemoglobin level between 10 - 12 g/dL. Higher hemoglobin levels increase the risk for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or death.

Anemia Anemia is the condition in which there are fewer red blood cells than normal. Hemolytic anemia describes the condition in which this loss of red blood cells occurs because the red cells break up (lyse). This can happen inside the blood vessels (intravascular hemolysis) or outside of the blood vessel (extravascular hemolysis). Hemolytic anemia can occur for many reasons, including heat stroke, parasites, viral infections. toxins and other conditions. One of the things that can cause hemolytic anemia is immune system disease - in this case the disorder is known as immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). This is the term currently preferred for the condition formerly known as auto-immune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). The reason for the subtle name change is the recognition that much of the time the immune system really is attacking an invader it just happens to be one that is stuck on the red blood cell so both get destroyed. Anemia occurs for a number or reasons but they break down into two major categories. Either blood is not being made in the first place (nonregenerative anemia) or else it is being destroyed in some manner even though it is being made by the body. If the destruction outpaces the production, anemia occurs.

Ambulatory Management of Common Forms of Anemia
DAVID R. LITTLE, M.D., M.S.
Wright State University School of Medicine Dayton, Ohio
Anemia is a prevalent condition with a variety of underlying causes. Once the etiology has been established, many forms of anemia can be easily managed by the family physician. Iron deficiency, the most common form of anemia, may be treated orally or, rarely, parenterally. Vitamin B deficiency has traditionally been treated with intramuscular injections, although oral and intranasal preparations are also available. The treatment of folate deficiency is straightforward, relying on oral supplements. Folic acid supplementation is also recommended for women of child-bearing age to reduce their risk of neural tube defects. Current research focuses on folate's role in reducing the risk of premature cardiovascular disease. A nemia is a common clinical syndrome frequently diagnosed and managed by the family physician. The prevalence of anemia in the United States has been reported to be about 29 to 30 cases per 1,000 females of all ages and six cases per 1,000 males under the age of 45, rising to a peak of 18.5 cases per 1,000 men over age 75. Anemia is defined as a reduction below normal in the total red blood cell volume (hematocrit) or in the concentration of blood hemoglobin.
