This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. The word was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. in 1846. Another definition is a "reversible lack of awareness", whether this is a total lack of awareness (e.g. a general anaesthestic) or a lack of awareness of a part of a the body such as a spinal anaesthetic or another nerve block would cause. Anesthesia differs from analgesia in blocking all sensation, not only pain. Today, the term general anesthesia in its most general form can include: citation needed

If you are faced with the possibility of needing surgery in the future, chances are you will need some type of anesthesia to go along with it. There are many different types of anesthesia. Which one you will need depends on a variety of factors such as the type of surgery you are having and your state of health. Some surgical procedures require only an injection of local anesthesia into the incision area. Other procedures cannot be performed unless you are completely anesthetized unconscious and unaware of pain. Your

Anesthesia Awareness Campaign
The mission of the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign is "to prevent patients (even one) from experiencing anesthesia awareness and its consequences through education, prevention, and empowerment by replacing ignorance or fear with knowledge." Anesthesia awareness is the phenomenon of being mentally alert (and terrified) while supposedly under full general anesthesia. The patient is paralyzed, unable to speak, and totally helpless to communicate his/her awareness. Since 1998, the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign has been educating and advocating for the prevention of anesthesia awareness and supporting victims Anesthesia Awareness Latest Developments The Anesthesia Awareness Campaign, along with other professional societies, victims, and awareness-oriented organizations, will be filmed by a TV crew from South Korea for a documentary on awareness the week of May 19 . Anesthesia - Topic Overview
      • Anesthesia controls pain during surgery or other medical procedures. It can relax you, block pain, or make you sleepy, forgetful, or unconscious. There are three types of anesthesia. Local anesthesia numbs a small part of your body. Regional anesthesia blocks pain to a larger part of your body. And general anesthesia affects the brain and entire body. The type of anesthesia you get is based on your health, the problem being treated, the results of your exams, and the type of procedure. Your doctor or nurse may prefer one type over another for your surgery. In some cases, your doctor or nurse may let you choose which type to have. Sometimes, such as in an emergency, you do not get to choose. All types of anesthesia have some risk, but major side effects and other problems from anesthesia are not common. Some health conditions increase the chance of problems from anesthesia. Your doctor or nurse will identify any health problems you have that could affect your care and can talk with you about any concerns you may have.

The specialty of anesthesiology has been marked by unprecedented growth and change since the first public demonstration in Boston of ether anesthesia in 1846. Today, rendering the patient insensitive to pain while monitoring and maintaining vital organ function during surgery remains the main professional activity of the anesthesiologist.
Stanford is a world-leading department of anesthesia that offers comprehensive training in perioperative patient care, pain management and critical care medicine. Our program aims to train expert clinicians, future leaders in the field of anesthesia, and clinician-scientists who will expand our knowledge of the specialty through basic science and translational discoveries that ultimately improve our ability to provide superior care for our patients.

"I also attended on two occasions the operating theatre in the hospital at Edinburgh , and saw two very bad operations, one on a child, but I rushed away before they were completed. Nor did I ever attend again, for hardly any inducement would have been strong enough to make me do so; this being long before the blessed days of chloroform. The two cases fairly haunted me for many a long year."

The Doctor Behind the Mask
Most people think of their anesthesiologist only as the "doctor behind the mask" who helps them sleep through surgery without pain and who wakes them up when surgery is over. Let's lift the doctor's mask and take a look at the responsibilities and education of the anesthesiologist. Role in Modern Medicine
Most people believe that anesthesiologists are the doctors who administer medications which keep them from feeling pain and sensations. However, few people realize that beyond ensuring the patient's comfort, today's anesthesiologists' primary role in the operating room is to make informed medical judgments to protect and regulate the patient's critical life functions that are affected by the surgery being performed. Also, these medical specialists are the doctors who will immediately diagnose and treat any medical problems that might arise during surgery or the recovery period. Anesthesiologists need a wide range of knowledge about medications, internal medicine, how the human body works, and its responses to the stress of surgery. As physicians, anesthesiologists are responsible for administering anesthesia to relieve pain and for managing vital life functions, including breathing, heart rhythm, blood pressure, and brain and kidney functions during surgery.

Anesthesia
En espa±ol: Anestesia Say: ah-nus- thee -zhuh Anesthesia is medicine that doctors and nurses give to make people feel comfortable when they're having surgery stitches , or other things that might be painful. There are different types of anesthesia: general and local. General anesthesia is cool because it helps you fall asleep for a little bit so you don't feel any pain while the doctors are fixing something. A doctor can give you general anesthesia with a shot or by letting you breathe a special kind of air. The medicine wears off and you wake up a while later. Local anesthesia doesn't make you fall asleep, but it numbs the area so you won't feel pain while you get stitches or minor surgery to remove something like a wart.

    What is Anesthesia?
Anesthesia is a state of unconsciousness induced in an animal. The three components of anesthesia are analgesia (pain relief), amnesia (loss of memory) and immobilization . The drugs used to achieve anesthesia usually have varying effects in each of these areas. Some drugs may be used individually to achieve all three. Others have only analgesic or sedative properties and may be used individually for these purposes or in combination with other drugs to achieve full anesthesia. Curariform skeletal muscle relaxants or neuromuscular blockers ( e.g. succinylcholine, decamethonium curare, gallamine, pancuronium ) are not anesthetics and have no analgesic effects. They may only be used in conjunction with general anesthetics. Normally, artificial respiration must be provided. Physiologic monitoring methods must also be used to assess anesthetic depth, as normal reflex methods will not be reliable. It is important to realize that anesthesia is not a simple thing. It has profound effects on an animal's physiology because of the generalized central nervous system effects as well as specific effects on all other body systems. Thus, while anesthesia is necessary to prevent pain or distress in research animals, it must not be ventured into lightly. It is important to learn about the drugs you will be using and about the physiology of the animal you will be monitoring. Specific
