Training may be for the purpose of companionship detection protection , or entertainment An animal trainer may use reinforcement or punishment to condition an animal's responses. Some animal trainers may have a knowledge of the principles of behavior analysis and operant conditioning , but there are many ways to train animals and no legal requirements or certifications are required. Name: About:
WELCOME

This community is intended as a space for those with a serious interest in animal training, be they professionals, pet owners, or working or sporting enthusiasts. While it is expected that much of the focus of this community will be dog-related, discussion of any type of animal training, whether it be pet, exotic or equine, is encouraged here.
You can post about behaviour and training problems, solutions, questions, tips, techniques, successes, topics for discussion, book reviews and recommendations, articles, training for sport and work or anything else that seems relevant.
If you're new to the community, feel free to make a post to introduce yourself and your animals, and tell us about your interests and experience.
This is an international community, and we welcome input from all perspectives. It is not the intention of the moderators to push their own training philosophies, or to argue for one true way, but rather to create a safe space where trainers from all backgrounds and ideologies can discuss their interests and offer advice to others. Debate is encouraged, but please keep your arguments constructive, civil and relevant.
While you are free to post questions about your pet's problem behaviour to the group, please remember that the internet is no substitute for advice from a professional whose credentials you can verify, and who can actually meet and work with your animal. This particularly applies if your problem involves aggression or anything else of a potentially serious nature.

Training may be for the purpose of companionship, detection, protection, or entertainment. An animal trainer may use reinforcement or punishment to condition an animal's responses. Modern animal trainers often have a sophisticated knowledge of the principles of behavior analysis and operant conditioning, but there are many ways to train animals and no legal requirements or certifications required as of yet. Certifying bodies exist but they do not share consistent goals or requirements so it can be difficult to tell what kind of training a trainer has had to do his or her job. Many modern animal trainers try to use positive reinforcement (follow a desired behavior with something worthwhile to the animal and the behavior will increase) and negative punishment (withdraw something the animal wants when he performs undersirable behaviors). Traditional trainers often rely on positive punishment (follow an undesirable behavior with a punisher to reduce the rate of the behavior) and negative reinforcement (withdraw an undesirable stimulus when the animal performs the desirable behavior).

This community includes a number of professional trainers, and people studying training (two of which are smirnoffmule and I).
Although this community will, no doubt, lean toward dog training, training of all animals is open for discussion, from equestrian sports to rat agility (yes, it exists!).
I hope this can be a place where expression of all opinions and discussion of all training methods are welcome, without personal attacks or judgment. Of course, debate is very welcome as long as members remain civil.
It will be a place where academic articles, essays or training practices will be on the table for discussion. I know there are a number of professional trainers here, and others with an interest in training, so please join up. Even if the community is an intimate one I expect it will generate interesting discussion.
If you're a novice trainer who is seeking advice or tips, it will be a place where judgment is reserved in favour of constructive advice from many experienced individuals with a variety of different ideas, beliefs and cultures.
