Individuals with anorexia are known to commonly control body weight through the means of voluntary starvation, purging vomiting , excessive exercise , or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. It primarily affects adolescent females, however approximately 10% of people with the diagnosis are male. Anorexia nervosa is a complex condition, involving psychological neurobiological , and sociological components. The term anorexia is of Greek origin: a (α, prefix of negation), n (ν, link between two vowels) and orexis (ορεξις, appetite) thus meaning a lack of desire to eat. A person who is diagnosed with anorexia nervosa is most commonly referred to with the adjectival form anorexic . The noun form, "

Individuals suffering from anorexia have extreme weight loss. Weight loss is usually 15% below the person's normal body weight. People suffering from anorexia are very skinny but are convinced that they are overweight. Weight loss is obtained by many ways. Some of the common techniques used are excessive exercise, intake of laxatives and not eating. Anorexics have an intense fear of becoming fat. Their dieting habits develop from this fear. Anorexia mainly affects adolescent girls. People with anorexia continue to think they are overweight even after they become extremely thin, are very ill or near death. Often they will develop strange eating habits such as refusing to eat in front of other people. Sometimes the individuals will prepare big meals for others while refusing to eat any of it. The disorder is thought to be most common among people of higher socioeconomic classes and people involved in activities where thinness is especially looked upon, such as dancing, theater, and distance

Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR In recent weeks, I have read media reports that mentioned both " drunkorexia " and " manorexia ." I have fielded questions about " diabulimia " from coworkers and friends. From the sound of these terms, it appears that there are a lot of new and recently discovered eating disorders. I certainly did not hear the word drunkorexia in medical school. Actually, these new terms (which, by the way, are not official or standard medical terms) simply refer to subcategories of the well-known eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa , both of which affect up to 1% of women and a lower percentage of men at some point in their lives.

Anorexia nervosa is an illness that usually occurs in teenage girls, but it can also occur in teenage boys, and adult women and men. People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin. It's an attempt to use food and weight to deal with emotional problems. Return to top
What is the difference between anorexia and bulimia?
People with anorexia starve themselves, avoid high-calorie foods and exercise constantly. People with bulimia eat huge amounts of food, but they throw up soon after eating, or take laxatives or diuretics (water pills) to keep from gaining weight. People with bulimia don't usually lose as much weight as people with anorexia. Return to top

Maria obsessively counts calories, measures food portions, and weighs herself at least twice a day. She refuses to eat at restaurants, in the school cafeteria, or anywhere else in public, and she lives on salad dressed with vinegar, rice cakes, and sugar-free Jell-O. Maria also has a large stash of fat-free candy in her room. She allows herself to indulge as long as she goes for a run right afterwards. The key features of anorexia nervosa are:

Anorexia Nervosa
What is anorexia nervosa? Anorexia nervosa is a serious, often chronic, and life-threatening eating disorder defined by a refusal to maintain minimal body weight within 15 percent of an individual's normal weight. Other essential features of this disorder include an intense fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, and amenorrhea (absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles when they are otherwise expected to occur). In addition to the classic pattern of restrictive eating, some people will also engage in recurrent binge eating and purging episodes. Starvation, weight loss, and related medical complications are quite serious and can result in death. People who have an ongoing preoccupation with food and weight even when they are thin would benefit from exploring their thoughts and relationships with a therapist. The term anorexia literally means loss of appetite, but this is a misnomer. In fact, people with anorexia nervosa ignore hunger and thus control their desire to eat. This desire is frequently sublimated through cooking for others or hiding food that they will not eat in their personal space. Obsessive exercise may accompany the starving behavior and cause others to assume the person must be healthy. Who develops anorexia nervosa?

28 May 2008 @ 07:46 pm My ex / current guy im seeing (its sooo complicated) has made it perfectly clear he only likes thin girls. We were watching Britains Next Top Model the other day and he said that one of them had 'fat arms'. These girls are models for crying out loud! How can they have fat arms?! He also said that I'm thinner now than I was when we were seeing each other last summer before we had a break. (im about 8lbs lighter now) He knew I had bulimia for the duration of my years at University in London (where I varied between 9st 4 (130 lbs) and 8st5 ( 117) )and still have episodes of mia now, yet he's so blatant about his views it makes me hate myself. He stated that 'Fat' is anthing above a UK 10. (i think thats a US 6?) I said 'what?!' and he said, you're alright babe, you're an 8'.

Introduction
Although anorexia (an-o-REK-se-uh) centers around food, the disease isn't only about food. Anorexia is an unhealthy way to try to cope with emotional problems, perfectionism and a desire for control. When you have anorexia, you often equate your self-worth with how thin you are. Anorexia can be chronic and difficult to overcome. But with treatment, you can gain a better sense of who you are, return to healthier eating habits and reverse some of anorexia's serious complications. NEXT: Signs and symptoms

I'm so glad I found your site on the Internet! Eating disorders are hardly acknowledged in the Far East and I'm starting to get really worried about my best friend.
My friend has been on this crazy diet for six months since we started freshman year at law school and she's lost 17 kilos (37.4 lbs.)! She used to be a nicely rounded at 60 kg (132 lbs.) and 166 cm (5 ft 5) but now she weighs 43.5 kilos (96 lbs.). Is this too thin?
Her work always been excellent and she was always popular, but now she's really changed. Sure she has a boyfriend and has even been offered a modeling job, but I got real scared when she overdosed on laxatives today and called me sick and in a panic from a fast food restaurant . I was really shocked when I drove her home and put her to bed. She had bruises on her hips and ribs and she said sleeping on them was painful!
When I tried to get her to drink some soup, she cried and cried and said it would make her fat! I've only ever seen her drink coffee in the last 5 months. She never eats with us in the cafeteria anymore and would always brightly excuse herself to work in the library.
We're all envious of her wonderful figure now, but she's really thin and I'm worried. She said if I tell her parents, she'll kill me. She swears she'll stop dieting once she loses the last kilo, but that's what she said at 50 kilos! I don't want to lose her friendship, but I don't want her to lose even more! Could she die? Is this anorexia? Do write back soon or she'll be 5 ft 5 and less than 95 lbs!
