Eating disorders are so common in America that 1 or 2 out of every 100 students will struggle with one. The most common types of eating disorder are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa (usually called simply "anorexia" and "bulimia"). But other food-related disorders, like binge eating disorders, body image disorders, and food phobias, are showing up more frequently than they used to.
Anorexia
Other people with anorexia do something called binge eating and purging, where they eat a lot of food and then try to get rid of the calories by forcing themselves to vomit, using laxatives, or exercising excessively.
Bulimia
Bulimia is similar to anorexia. With bulimia, a person binge eats (eats a lot of food) and then tries to compensate in extreme ways, such as forced vomiting or excessive exercise, to prevent weight gain. Over time, these steps can be dangerous. To be diagnosed with bulimia, a person must be binging and purging regularly, at least twice a week for a couple of months. Binge eating is different from going to a party and "pigging out" on pizza, then deciding to go to the gym the next day and eat more healthfully. People with bulimia eat a large amount of food (often junk food) at once, usually in secret. The person typically feels powerless to stop the eating and can only stop once he or she is too full to eat any more. Most people with bulimia then purge by vomiting, but may also use laxatives or excessive exercise.

Anorexia nervosa is an extremely dangerous eating disorder in which a person intentionally deprives herself or himself of food and can literally starve to death in an attempt to be what they consider "thin." The disorder involves extreme weight lossat least 15% below the individual's "ideal" weightand a refusal to maintain body weight that is even minimally normal for their age and height and body frame. The self-esteem of individuals with this disorder is hyper-dependent on their body shape and weight. Even if they become extremely emaciated, an anorexic person's distorted body image convinces them they are "fat." Weight loss for them is viewed as an impressive self-achievement and an indication of extraordinary self-discipline, whereas weight gain is perceived as an unacceptable failure of self-control. The disorder usually begins around the time of puberty and the onset is often associated with a stressful life event such as leaving home for college, or their parents divorcing. While more than 90% of the cases affect young women, the numbers of recognized cases of males with anorexia nervosa is increasing. Males can be at particular high risk for developing life-threatening medical problems as a direct result of the disorder, probably because they are too often diagnosed later than females. In their concerted efforts to continually reduce their weight, anorexics reduce their food and calorie intake through such rigid strategies as excluding what they perceive to be high fat or high calorie foods; limiting their food intake to just a few specific low calorie foods; bingeing and purging; purging after even the smallest meals; refusing to eat in public, and/or going to great lengths to avoid eating with even close friends or family. Anorexics become obsessed with foodhoarding it, going to extra efforts to fix meals for others, carrying around stashes of candyyet they will not allow themselves to eat any of it.

What is anorexia?

Anorexia, or anorexia nervosa, is an eating disorder. Anorexics have a problem keeping their body weight in a normal range or even above a minimal weight level considered to be healthy.
There are two types of anorexia:
  • Restricting Type: The first type of anorexia, called restricting, is found in those anorexics who severely limit their caloric intake and/or who exercise to excess to cause weight loss.
  • Binge-Eating/Purging Type: The second type of anorexia, called binge-eating/purging, is found in those anorexics who eat in binges and then purge the body of the ingested food either by self-induced vomiting, the ingestion of large quantities of laxatives, the overuse of diuretics and enemas to rid the body of food. What characteristics are associated with anorexia?
Anorexics do not accurately see, or perceive, their body’s shape and weight. They fear weight gain, and they work hard to stay thin.
In most cases anorexics actually lose weight. Weight loss usually occurs because of a severe reduction in caloric intake. In addition, weight loss is achieved by self-induced vomiting, the use of diuretics (water pills), and the use of laxatives. Many anorexics also exercise to excess in an attempt to burn calories.

This information on anorexia is also applicable to men. Anorexia is very serious and has an impact on both physical and mental health. Left untreated, anorexia can be fatal. People develop anorexia as a way of dealing with the conflicts, pressures, and stresses of their lives. Anorexia may be used as a way to express control when the rest of one's life seems out of control.
    What is Anorexia?
Anorexia is self-imposed starvation. Anorexia is a serious, life-threatening disorder which usually stems from underlying emotional causes. Although people with anorexia are obsessed with food, they continually deny their hunger. Women with anorexia often also limit or restrict other parts of their lives besides food, including relationships, social activities, or pleasure. Anorexia can cause severe medical problems and even lead to death.
    Anorexia Warning Signs
There are many warning signs which indicate that someone may be suffering from anorexia. A person with anorexia may exhibit one, all, or any combination of these warning signs. Becoming aware of these warning signs is the first step in helping someone suffering from anorexia. When you help someone with anorexia, you may end up saving her life.

What are eating disorders? Eating disorders often are long-term illnesses that may require long-term treatment. In addition, eating disorders frequently occur with other mental disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders (NIMH, 2002). The earlier these disorders are diagnosed and treated, the better the chances are for full recovery. This fact sheet identifies the common signs, symptoms, and treatment for three of the most common eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder (NIMH, 2002). ScienceDaily (Jan. 12, 2008) See also: "This is a potentially important finding," said first author Michele A. Crisafulli, "because it suggests that wider dissemination of information about the biological and genetic underpinnings of anorexia nervosa could help decrease the blame-based stigma that is associated with the disorder." Crisafulli conducted the experimental study as an undergraduate honors thesis project while she was a student at UNC. She is currently working toward a doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Boston University. "There is a lot of false information about anorexia nervosa disseminated in pop culture. This study suggests that even a nugget of accurate biological information can influence how health care professionals perceive the illness," said Dr. Cynthia M. Bulik, William and Jeanne Jordan Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders and Psychiatry, director of UNC's Eating Disorders Program and the study's senior author. "It opens up new horizons for accurate information campaigns to help the public understand that people with anorexia nervosa are not to blame for their illness and that biology plays a role," Bulik said.

    Anorexia Nervosa : Judy's Story
Hello! Welcome to my webpage. Let me begin by introducing myself to you. My name is Judy Sargent. I am 39 years-old and a recovered anorexic. I suffered from severe anorexia nervosa for 10 years, was hospitalized 26 times, and landed myself in intensive care units on multiple occasions. You would never guess any of these things looking at me today. Right now, I am a registered nurse with a Master of Science Degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. I am in the process of completing Doctoral Studies in Nursing at a major university. In my spare time, I have written a book about my descent into anorexia and the subsequent recovery process. My book is titled, "The Long Road Back: A Survivor's Guide to Anorexia." I wrote the book with the hope that it will offer individuals currently suffering from an eating disorder, family members, friends, and therapists insight, compassionate understanding, and hope. My book provides a hopeful and uplifting journey through the recovery process. The links provided below will assist you in finding helpful information. Thank you for visiting this site.

Individuals with anorexia nervosa typically display a pronounced fear of weight gain and a dread of becoming fat although they are dramatically underweight. Concerns and perceptions about their weight have a extremely powerful influence and impact on their self-evaluation. The seriousness of the weight loss and its physical effects is minimized or denied (women with the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa have missed at least three consecutive menstrual cycles). Diagnostic criteria of anorexia nervosa include two subtypes of the disorder that describe two distinct behavioral patterns. Individuals with the Restricting Type maintain their low body weight purely by restricting food intake and increased activity (i.e. compulsive exercise). Those with the Binge-Eating/Purging Type usually restrict their food intake but also regularly engage in binge eating and/or purging behaviors (i.e. self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas). Binge-Eating/Purging Type of Anorexia Nervosa is also frequently associated with other impulse control problems and mood disorders. People who suffer from anorexia often have low self-esteem and a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions. The eating disorder is often a reaction to external and internal conflicts (i.e. anxiety, stress, and unhappiness can be leading factors).
