Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa occurs when an adolescent refuses to maintain body weight at or above a minimal normal weight for age and height. The weight loss is usually self-imposed and is usually less than 85% of expected weight. The condition occurs most frequently in females, however, it can occur in males. Generally, the teenager has an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat even though underweight. Self evaluation of body weight and shape may be distorted and there may be denial of the potential health hazards caused by the low body weight. Physical symptoms can include:
  • absence of regular menstrual cycles dry skin low pulse rate, and low blood pressure
Behavioral changes commonly occur such as:
  • social withdrawal irritability moodiness, and depression
Without treatment, this disorder can become chronic and with severe starvation, some teenagers may die. For additional information see the following Facts for Families

Possibilities for Change:
Fresh Perspectives on anorexia/bulimia
In the battle against anorexia/bulimia, individuals, the community and social institutions, are either anorexia/bulimia-supporting or fighting against anorexia/bulimia - there is no middle ground. To treat anorexia/bulimia as a problem merely about food, to believe in a genetic basis of behavior, to simply see the problem as an individual pathology, or to treat the problem only through pharmaceuticals, is extremely pro-anorexic/bulimic. These strategies help to maintain the problem by denying the scope of the problem. Pro-anorexic/bulimic ideas would have us believe anorexia/bulimia exists in a vacuum: it is a freak of nature, that it is merely a case of bad genes, the temperment of spoiled, little, rich girls. To take a stance against the problem - to be anti-anorexic/bulimic - is to realize there is a definite and necessary place for medicine in the treatment of anorexia/bulimia. It is also important to realize there are a multitude of social factors living at the very heart of the problem.

September 25th, 2007 5 Comments Fashion Milan Fashion Week NSFW NSFW: Italian designer Nolita is celebrating Milan Fashion Week with a number of billboard and newspaper advertisements featuring a naked anorexia woman in an effort to warn the public of the effects of the disease. The ad features twenty-seven year old French woman Isabelle Caro , an anorexic who weighs just 68 lbs. Isbelle blames a “difficult childhood” for her bout with the deadly disorders: “I’ve hidden myself and covered myself for too long. Now I want to show myself fearlessly, even though I know my body arouses repugnance. I want to recover because I love life and the riches of the universe. I want to show young people how dangerous this illness is.” According to Reuters: “‘Everyone says it’s ugly but I don’t think it is, it really brings the message home,’ said passer-by Giuseppina Ravelli after seeing the billboard in Milan. ‘The people who reach these kind of levels have such great problems it is good that they use their illness to teach others about it.’ “But the president of Italy’s Association for the Study of Anorexia, Fabiola De Clercq, said the woman used for the photo should be in hospital and the image was ‘too crude’. Far from helping women suffering from anorexia, the photo may make many of them feel envious of the model and determined to become even thinner than her, she said.”

Causes, incidence, and risk factors
The exact cause of anorexia nervosa is not known, but social attitudes towards body appearance, as well as family factors, are believed to play a role. Anorexia nervosa usually occurs in adolescence or young adulthood. It is more common in females. The eating disorder is seen mainly in Caucasian women who are high academic achievers and have a goal-oriented family or personality.

Anorexia Nervosa : the relentless pursuit of thinness.
People who suffer from this disorder have an intense and irrational fear of gaining weight because they see themselves as being fat, even when everyone else doesn't. Anorexics feel that they are heavier than the rest of the people around them and want to do something about it. They feel the need to become thinner and thinner and that the quickest way to lose weight is to not eat at all. Food, calories, and body weight take control of the person's life. Anorexics often become isolated. They stop seeing friends and having fun.
Signs and Symptoms:
  • Missing periods.
  • Strange eating habits, like restricting certain foods or drastically reducing how much food you eat.
  • Feeling moody.
  • Denying hunger.
  • Extreme concern with body weight and shape.
  • Over exercising.
  • Significant or extreme weight loss.
Cindy's Story Cindy was 12 when she developed anorexia nervosa. A rather shy, studious girl, she tried hard to please everybody. She was attractive, but just a little bit overweight. She was afraid that she wasn't pretty enough to get the attention of boys in her class. Her father jokingly told her that she would never get a boyfriend if she didn't lose some weight. She took him seriously, though, and began to diet. "I thought that being thin was the most important thing. I thought it was the only way to get people to like me or notice me. I started worrying that if I ever gained weight I'd become ugly." Soon after the pounds started dropping off, Cindy's periods stopped. She became obsessed with dieting and food, and she developed strange eating habits. She stopped eating all fast food and anything with fat in it. Every day she weighed all the food she would eat on the kitchen scale, cutting solids into tiny pieces and measuring liquids exactly. Cindy knew the calorie and fat counts of everything. She put her daily ration in small containers lining them up in neat rows. She also exercised all the time, sometimes as much as 3 hours a day to burn lots of calories. "I'd inline skate, do exercise tapes, or run eight miles a day." She never took an elevator if she could walk up steps.

Fertility and Anorexia Can anorexia make you infertile?
Yes, in order for a woman to menstruate, become pregnant, and give birth to a healthy baby she needs body fat. Many anorexic girls and women either never get their period or their period stops due to extreme weight loss. The cessation of menstruation, (amenorrhea), can be permanent depending on how long a woman has been suffering from anorexia. But for most women menstruation will start up when they begin to gain weight. Roughly 80% of anorexic women who successfully treat their eating disorder will regain their ability to conceive. If Your Guinea Pig is Anorexic, See a Vet Immediately!
Anorexia (not eating or eating very little) is extremely serious and requires veterinary diagnosis and treatment. A cavy you have just brought home that is not eating may have a respiratory or other bacterial infection.
If no feces or urine are being passed and your guinea pig is not eating, you must seek veterinary care immediately!
In addition, a pet that is losing weight (or if young, failing to gain) is also at great risk. Guinea pigs are especially vulnerable because of their need for vitamin C and tendency to develop ketosis.
"Irreversible ketosis may develop rapidly in guinea pigs despite a resumption of eating." Harkness and Wagner
Harkness and Wagner suggest a variety of causes for anorexia:
Changes in diet
Wide temperature swings
Poisoning
Water deprivation Loss of a cage mate An aggressive cage mate preventing another's eating Mechanical problems with feeders or sipper tubes Food changes (too hard or unpalatable food or a poorly designed diet) Dental malocclusion Pain Loss of smell Obesity Oral lacerations Infectious diseases (such as pneumonia) Metabolic disorders such as Vitamin C deficiency or renal failure Analgesic use can cause anorexia Some guinea pigs prescribed antibiotics, especially baytril, will stop eating. If this happens, the vet should be notified and consideration given to switching to a different drug. (See

WELCOME! A multi-site, international collaborative group of investigators is studying the genetics of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. These collaborative studies have generated a substantial amount of data on the clinical phenomena and genetics of eating disorders. This web site serves as a means for the dissemination of scientific information generated by the above mentioned studies. It is our intent that this web site will be an educational tool for those in academia as well as those afflicted with eating disorders and their families who are interested in learning about genetic research in eating disorders. Topics such as current research studies seeking participation, new research findings, eating disorder warning signs, and guidelines to treatment will be posted. PRICE FOUNDATION CANDIDATE GENE PROJECT The primary purpose of this second generation Price Foundation study is to evaluate specific candidate genes that may play a role in the genetic susceptibility to eating disorders by performing genetic association studies. Secondary analyses will be performed investigating various behavioral and psychological phenotypes. Between 1996 and 2002, the Price Foundation sponsored the collection of approximately 2000 participants with anorexia and bulimia nervosa, 2000 parents, and 750 control women. To date, this project has generated over 35 publications that help to establish the role of genetics in eating disorder vulnerability.

Anorexia Nervosa
Dieting and thinness has become a new obsession in Western culture in the past 30 years. While there is nothing wrong with maintaining a healthy lifestyle and losing a few extra pounds, there is a growing trend in North America and Europe of women resorting to extreme measures in order to lose weight. One of the ever-growing forms of "dieting" is anorexia. Anorexia is a severe and chronic eating disorder characterized by self-imposed starvation. If you are suffering from anorexia or know someone who is, find out how you can overcome the disease. Anorexia is life threatening, but there is support and effective treatment for anorexia out there. What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as anorexia, is an eating disorder in which the sufferer refuses to maintain a healthy weight. Through starvation, an anorexic will continuously lose weight, eventually causing severe physical and emotional turmoil. An anorexic will have a body weight that is, on average, 15% lower than the expected weight for their age and height. Women who suffer from anorexia have an extreme fear of being overweight and cannot see that they are actually severely underweight. They will cut back on calories and fat, and may engage in intensive exercise or purging, such as vomiting or using laxatives, in order to lose even more weight. Anorexics will avoid food at all costs, and may skip meals and weigh themselves obsessively to ensure that they do not gain weight. Female anorexics will lose their periods (amenorrhea) unless they are medically forced.

What is anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa is a psychological illness with often devastating physical consequences. The sufferer usually has a morbid fear of weight gain and becoming fat, although this is not the case for all anorectics. Those suffering from anorexia will deprive themselves of food (and sometimes liquids), leading to weight loss and, usually, a variety of physical problems and health issues.
Like other eating disorders, anorexia is a mask covering other underlying problems. The sufferer tends to have low self-esteem and a need to control aspects of their environment. Anorexia is used as a way to cope with stress, anxiety and feeling out of control.
Eating disorders, particularly anorexia and bulimia, usually affect females but the number of male anorectics is on the increase. Somebody can develop anorexia at any age, in any place and in any situation.
Facts and statistics for anorexia

Causes of anorexia nervosa
There is no pre-determined cause of anorexia and the reasons for the onset of the disorder may vary from person to person. Often there are a number of contributory factors, many of which may be from the sufferer's past. One thing that all anorectics have in common is low self-esteem. Low self-esteem can quickly lead to a negative body image.

A genetic link to anorexia GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH SUPPORTS THE THEORY THAT ANOREXIA IS MORE THAN A PSYCHOSOCIAL ILLNESS: GENES ARE LIKELY RESPONSIBLE, TOO. BY TORI DeANGELIS Researchers have discovered biological evidence of a genetic underpinning to anorexia nervosa: genetic linkage on chromosome 1 for the complex psychiatric disorder. "This is the first genetic linkage finding we have in anorexia, so we're quite excited," notes the study's first author, Dorothy Grice, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania's department of psychiatry and Center for Neurobiology and Behavior. Linkage refers to the greater-than-chance likelihood that two separate DNA sequences will be close to one another on the same chromosome, supplying biological evidence for a genetic trait if seen among two or more family members. The findings, reported in this month's issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics, support data from twin and family studies suggesting that biology does indeed account, at least in part, for the disorder. The findings add a new dimension to a field that has posited mainly psychological, family and sociocultural roots to the disorder, notes University of Pittsburgh psychiatrist Walter Kaye, MD, who heads the large international multisite project on the genetics of eating disorders, of which the study is a part.

There are different ways this problem can manifest itself. It can be as extreme as complete avoidance from any type of sexual pleasure including masturbation, or as subtle as limiting sexual expression to anonymous sexual encounters. Oftentimes, there is an underlying social phobia or extreme shyness. There could have been a devastating rejection or trauma that resulted in subsequent avoidant behavior. There are many reasons why avoidant behaviors exist, but most often regardless of the original cause, there seems to be a resulting fear of intimacy that lies at the heart of the problem. Sometimes the risk of criticism and rejection is too great to bear, so the individual withdraws in self-imposed exile from the human race. Social skills may be so impoverished that the person may have to be taught how to shop, cook, have a conversation with others, and other basic skills. More Contact: SEND FEEDBACK
