Introduction
This web resource provides species-level information on the ants of Costa Rica. The basic information unit is a species web page. The page for a particular species contains images, identification tips, geography, natural history, and recommendations on how to collect the species. Linked to these species pages are various synthetic documents, such as keys and species lists. There is a genus list, which contains all the ant genera known to occur in Costa Rica, and there is a picture guide to these genera. The picture guide is not a key; for technical keys to the ant genera of the world refer to Bolton (1994) or Holldobler and Wilson (1990).

Army ants, nature's ultimate coalition task force, strike their prey en masse in a blind, voracious column and pay no attention to the conventional wisdom of evolutionary biologists. The common scientific belief has been that army ants originated separately on several continents over millions of years. Now it is found there was one evolution. Using fossil data and the tools of a genetics detective, a Cornell University entomologist has discovered that these ants come from the same ancestor, because since the reign of the dinosaurs, about 100 million years ago, army ants in essence have not changed a bit. "Biologists have wondered why army ants, whose queens can't fly or get caught up by the wind, are yet so similar around the world. Army ants have evolved only once and that was in the mid-Cretaceous period," says Sean Brady, a Cornell postdoctoral researcher in entomology, whose study was conducted while he was doctoral candidate at the University of California-Davis.

ACTIVITY #1 - Introduction
Even though ants are tiny, as a group they have a big impact on the natural world. All together, ants have the largest biomass of any group of animals on the earth. Ants are champion earthmoversthey move more earth than any other organism including earthworms (who are no slouches in the dirt-moving business, as you may know!). Have kids draw or tell what they think is going on underneath the soil in an ant nest. What jobs do they do? What do they do for fun? Then read a book such as Ant Cities , by A. Dorros, Ants by W. Goetsch, or Insect Societies by E. O. Wilson.
ACTIVITY #2 - Ant Trails
Watch the ants coming and going in an outdoor ant colony. Encourage the students to form ideas about their movement:
  • Do they seem to follow each other?
  • How do they know where to go?
  • What advantage(s) would come from following another ant?

Ants riddled with cheating and corruption
Researchers find offspring of some fathers more likely to become queens
D.R. Nash
A leaf cutting ant queen and worker are shown in this image. Scientists have found a gene that seems to guarantee royal ascendancy.
Although ants are noted for their communal cooperation, the ranks of ant royalty are actually riddled with cheating and corruption, a new study finds. Ant queens were thought to be the products of nurturing , as certain larvae were fed foods that prompted their development into queens, with any larvae having an opportunity to ascend to the royal ranks. But researchers who used DNA fingerprinting on five colonies of leaf-cutting ants found that the offspring of some fathers were more likely to become reproductive queens than others. "These ants have a 'royal' gene or genes, giving them an unfair advantage and enabling them to cheat many of their altruistic sisters out of their chance to become a queen themselves," said study team member Bill Hughes of the University of Leeds in the U.K. Hughes and his co-author, Jacobus Boomsma of the University of Copenhagen, also noted that these "royal" lines were always rare in the colonies.

http://www.greensmiths.com/ants.htm
Ants Ants are among the most successful insects. Experts estimate that there could be 20,000 or more species of ants in the world. They have evolved to fill a variety of different ecological niches as predators, herbivores, leaf-cutters, seed-harvesters, aphid- tenders, and fungus-growers. They are found in deserts and rainforests, mountains and valleys, from the Arctic Circle to the tip of South America. They are interesting organisms that should be studied to better understand their unique behaviors and their roles in the earth's ecosystems. They can also be pests, however. Fire ants and others may sting or bite people and animals. Pharaoh ants get into wounds and dressings in hospitals. House-infesting ants can become pests by their presence in kitchens and living areas. Carpenter ants tunnel into structural wood. Mound-building ants mar the appearance of lawns and landscaped areas. Sometimes ants must be managed to suppress a pest problem. The Ant Colony and Life Cycle Ants belong to the insect order Hymenoptera, which also includes the wasps and bees . Ants are distinguished from many of their nearest relatives by two characteristics: a narrow "waist" (the slender free-moving portion of the abdomen called a pedicel) and elbowed antennae.
