Wiki: Anxiety disorder Anxiety disorder is a blanket term covering several different forms of abnormal, pathological anxiety fears , and phobias . It describes nervous system disorders as irrational or illogical worry not based on fact. Anxiety and fear are ubiquitous emotions . The terms anxiety and fear have specific scientific meanings, but common usage has made them interchangeable. For example, a phobia is a kind of anxiety that is also defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition ( DSM-IV-TR ) as a "persistent or irrational fear." Fear is defined as an emotional and physiological response to a recognized external threat. Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state, the sources of which are less readily identified. It is frequently accompanied by physiological symptoms that may lead to fatigue or even exhaustion . Because fear of recognized threats causes similar unpleasant mental and physical changes, patients sometimes use the terms fear and anxiety interchangeably. Distinguishing among different anxiety disorders is important, since accurate diagnosis is more likely to result in effective treatment and a better prognosis. Surveys have shown as many as 30% of Americans may be affected by anxiety disorders. [1] Contents:

Anxiety Disorder
There are five major anxiety disorders; you may experience one, two or more of these conditions simultaneously. They are listed below: SOCIAL ANXIETY AND PHOBIAS Social anxiety and phobias are the most common of the anxiety disorder symptoms. Social anxiety and agoraphobia are by far the most common. Social phobia restricts the sufferer by becoming apparent when interaction with other people or places is required; this can often result in a panic attack developing. Agoraphobia similarly restricts sufferers but is also evident at home when left alone or when asked to go somewhere without a person of trust. GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER Because your body and mind are affected directly by your environment, generalized anxiety disorders form when your anxiety levels, controlled by the Amygdala, become heightened. This usually happens as a result of constant stress or stressful life circumstances such as divorce or bereavement for example. Generalized anxiety disorder can manifest itself in many ways dependent on your physical and mental makeup. Generally, sufferers experience low grade, constant symptoms such as digestive upsets, dizziness, tiredness and insomnia, but sometimes more chronic symptoms may be apparent.

Dealing With An Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety is often just a normal and healthy emotion, but when it begins to affect a person's quality of life and is making the everyday things that they were once able to do more difficult, there is a problem. It is important that the person seek medical help in order to find treatment for their condition.
Everybody feels anxious at one time or another but when it keeps you from coping and is disrupting your daily life then you should definitely think about getting help. An anxiety disorder can make you feel incredibly anxious all of the time, even for no reason at all. These anxious feelings may be so incredibly uncomfortable that you stop some of the activities that used to be so regular and easy to you.
Chronic Anxiety Disorder
You are considered as having a chronic anxiety disorder if your symptoms persist for an extended period of time or if they are so severe that you are unable to do the normal, regular activities that you once could. A chronic anxiety disorder can contribute to a variety of health problems and usually includes a collection of different symptoms including panic attacks, agoraphobia, depressing thoughts, disturbing thoughts and symptoms, and mood swings.
Chronic anxiety can really turn a sufferer's life upside down and produce symptoms and situations that result in such a great restriction on their life that their work, relationships and general enjoyment of life becomes radically compromised. This then adds to the depression and anxiety, and sufferers soon find themselves in a vicious cycle that often seems impossible to get free of.

Anxiety Relief
by Joshua Miller
What Is Anxiety? Anxiety is a psychological term used to describe a persistent or fleeting feeling that is a mixture of apprehension, worry and fear. Severe anxiety can be accompanied by actual physical symptoms. Common anxiety symptoms include heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Because these symptoms also resemble those that occur during a heart attack, anxiety sufferers may worry that there is something physically wrong with them when in fact it is only psychiatric and not a physical problem. Persons who experience persistent anxiety may be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and need anxiety relief . There are many different anxiety disorders as defined by psychiatrists. Panic disorder, Social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and various phobias all fall under the anxiety disorder category. Persons who have medical histories that include family anxiety disorders are more likely to have the disorder themselves. When diagnosing a stress disorder, a psychiatrist must rule out any other factors such as medications that could be causing anxiety in the patient. Drug abuse and depression can also be causes of anxiety. The type of treatment required for an anxiety disorder differs depending on the particular type. For instance, those suffering from generalized anxiety disorder may be treated with medication. Generalized anxiety disorder is much more common in women than in men, and it brings about chronic anxiety that is unspecified and worrisome.

Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety Disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (about 18%) in a given year, causing them to be filled with fearfulness and uncertainty. Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event (such as speaking in public or a first date), anxiety disorders last at least 6 months and can get worse if they are not treated. Anxiety disorders commonly occur along with other mental or physical illnesses, including alcohol or substance abuse, which may mask anxiety symptoms or make them worse. In some cases, these other illnesses need to be treated before a person will respond to treatment for the anxiety disorder.
Effective therapies for anxiety disorders are available such as Alpha-Stim use or medication. These treatments can usually help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives. If you think you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek information and treatment right away.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
The DSM-IV identifies the principle characteristic of generalized anxiety disorder as excessive anxiety and worry, usually, over a period of greater than 6 months. The concerns are considered to be far out of proportion to reality. The anxiety is accompanied by at least three of the following symptoms: restlessness, easy fatiguability, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, irritability, and sleep disturbance. The symptoms are sufficiently severe to interfere with the person's life style, and are not attributable to another mental disorder In primary care, patients with GAD often present to their physicians with a cluster of autonomic symptoms, such as:
Cardiac (chest pains, palpitations, tachycardia, tachypnea)
Pulmonary (hyperventilation, smothering sensations, dyspnea)
Gastrointestinal (globus hystericus, indigestion, abdominal pains,
Epidemiology
No reliable figures are available of the actual incidence of GAD, probably because of the changing diagnostic criteria used in various studies (DSM-III, DSM-IIIR, ICD-10). It is evident, however, that GAD is recognized as a chronic disease, most frequently seen comorbidly with depression, other anxiety disorders, or a host of physical disorders. It has recently received additional attention because

ANXIETY DISORDER MANIFESTS ITSELF IN DIFFERENT WAYS
Drugs do Exist for Treatment
There are several different types of abnormal, pathological anxieties, fears, phobias and nervous conditions that can occur suddenly or gradually over a span of years and one common blanket term for these illnesses is anxiety disorder. This type of disorder may result in the impairment or prevention of normal daily routines in the patient and both anxiety as well as fear is an omnipresent emotion.
Though the term anxiety as well as fear have scientifically different interpretations, in common parlance the two terms are used interchangeably. This is so in the case of phobia which is another form of anxiety and can be defined as being fear that persists or is irrational and fear is defined as an emotional as well as physiological reply to external threats as they are perceived by the patient and such external threats may be a crash that is about to take place or a runaway car.
Types of Disorders
The different types of anxiety disorders include panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobia or simple phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The panic disorder relates to experiencing periods of fear that is very intense or is a psychological distress that comes about abruptly and lasts as little as half an hour and common symptoms are trembling, shortness of breath, palpitations of the heart, sweating, nausea, dizziness and hyperventilation as well as tingling sensations and also a feeling of being choked.

http://www.atcpaloalto.com/anxiety_disorder.htm
What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)? The essential feature of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is anxiety, which is generalized and persistent but not restricted to, or even strongly predominating in, any particular environmental circumstances (i.e. it is "free-floating"). Though everyone experiences occasional anxiety as a normal reaction to threatening, dangerous, uncertain, or important situations, some people feel anxious much of the time and may, in fact, suffer from GAD. The characteristic feature of GAD is that anxiety and worry is excessive and often feels uncontrollable. The worry often focuses on finances, job responsibilities, health of family members, or other routine life circumstances. Fears that the sufferer or a relative will shortly become ill or have an accident are often expressed, together with a variety of other worries and forebodings. In addition to chronic worry, GAD symptoms often include feelings of restlessness or edginess, fatigue, poor concentration, irritable mood, muscle tension, lightheadedness, and poor sleep. This disorder is more common in women, and it is often related to chronic environmental stress. Its course is variable but tends to be fluctuating and chronic.

Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety Disorder - Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension, fear, or worry. Some fears and worries are justified, such as worry about a loved one. Anxiety may occur without a cause, or it may occur based on a real situation, but may be out of proportion to what would normally be expected. Severe anxiety can have a serious impact on daily life. An anxiety condition is not a random, unknown and uncontrollable illness (even though it feels like it). Anxiety conditions appear for specific reasons and have definite underlying reasons why they persist. Once these reasons and underlying factors are properly addressed, anxiety conditions can be eliminated, and for many, for good. Anxiety Disorder Symptoms:
Generalized anxiety disorder - Excessive and unrealistic worry over a period of at least 6 months associated with 3 of the following: 1.Restlessness
