Wikipedia article on what a panic attack is:
Panic attacks are sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, fear and discomfort that are associated with a variety of somatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatic) and cognitive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive) symptoms[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_attack#_note-0). The onset of these episodes is typically abrupt, and may have no obvious trigger. Although these episodes may appear random, they are considered to be a subset of an evolutionary response commonly referred to as fight or flight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight-or-flight_response) that occur out of context, flooding the body with hormones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormones) (particularly adrenalin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrenalin)) that aid in defending itself from harm. [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_attack#_note-1)
According to the American Psychological Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Psychological_Association) the symptoms of a panic attack commonly last approximately ten minutes. However, panic attacks can be as short as 1-5 minutes, while more severe panic attacks may form a cyclic series of episodes, lasting for an extended period, sometimes hours. Often those afflicted will experience significant anticipatory anxiety in between attacks and in situations where attacks have previously occurred.

    More about Tommy Yeo
Anxiety disorder afflictions affect about 40 million American adults each year. The various anxiety disorder symptoms can cause sufferers to be filled with fear and uncertainty. Ordinary, mild but brief forms of anxiety can be caused by a stressful event such as speaking in public or even a first date. The feelings caused by this reaction will fade away a few hours after such an event has finished. For an anxiety disorder on the other hand, anxiety feelings can last for at least 6 months and they can get worse if they not treated in time. There are many different medications and therapies available for the treatment of an anxiety disorder, just as there are many different types of anxiety disorders. The six most common ones are panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder which is also known as OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia or social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder or GAD. Each of these anxiety disorders has different symptoms, but all of the symptoms include excessive, irrational fear and dread.

Eating Disorders relate to Anxiety Disorder
    Lori Henry Feb 8, 2007
Many individuals with disordered eating also suffer from anxiety
Eating Disorders are scary things: it takes an enormous amount of effort and energy for someone to willingly starve themselves They also affect sleep, the ability to function, physical pains and discomfort, dizziness, abdominal pain, numbness in parts of the body, and hot/cold sensations. These symptoms are also common in eating disorders, making these a hazardous mix. Individuals with eating disorders are also prone to be perfectionists, which make their anxiety levels skyrocket. They worry about what others think about them, they obsess about seemingly unimportant things, all leading to more anxiety and the possibility of an anxiety attack. To help alleviate anxiety, Doctors recommend doing relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation and tai chi, while taking the time to breathe deeply. Clearing the mind before an anxiety attack can lessen the impact and frequency of them.

An Anxiety Disorder Can Limit Success
An anxiety disorder can have disastrous effects on the lives of those suffering from this condition. An anxiety disorder can result from many different reasons or events. Some people learn to effectively cope with an anxiety disorder, but other people have a great deal of difficulty because they are not able to cope effectively. The world moves at a frantic pace, and those with an anxiety disorder have difficulty if they cannot learn to overcome the effects of their disorder. All people with this type of disorder have a serious condition, but some of these people can cope effectively while others cannot. An anxiety disorder can be a different condition in different people. This term is used to describe a variety of reactions and emotions that people feel. An anxiety disorder could cause different people to react in different ways to a vast array of emotions. Some of these people have phobias that affect their lives. Others with this type of disorder have fears that govern the way that they behave. Some of the people affected by an anxiety disorder learn to cope with their fears or phobias. Others cling to their homes for security because of their fears or phobias. An Anxiety Disorder Can Lead To Disastrous Consequences Some people with an anxiety disorder are constantly affected by their fears or phobias while others only face problems from time to time. Some have their disorder because of a specific occurrence in their lives while others cannot point to a specific trigger that brought on this disorder. All people have fears and phobias from time to time, but many people learn early to cope with their emotions. They act in spite of their fears and phobias. All of the people faced with fears or phobias feel some degree of anxiety. Successful people cope with the problems, and they function normally although confronted by their fears.

    PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ANXIETY DISORDER
In the fifties and sixties they had it, but it was less present in the typical nine-to-fiver and it was not nearly as complicated: I’m talking about anxiety disorder or panic disorder—a malaise characterized by what are today called anxiety attacks that feature symptoms that simulate those of the sympathomimetic system in overdrive: increased heart rate; edgy/nervous, “stinking” thinking; intense feelings of dread or impending doom; impeding, irrational thoughts; feelings of light-headedness or vertigo; tingling/chills in the extremities; nausea; tense(d) muscles; constricted chest; dryness of mouth; trembles; shakes; sweats; breathing struggles; and/or odd feelings of being detached, or that things are unreal or strange. Yes, the sixties were for homemakers and mothers working two jobs a time for pills. The sixties were the place also known as the Valley of the Dolls. But maybe pill-popping as an anxiety disorder treatment is not so antiquated a strategy nor so knee-jerk a solution. The response for some—especially those who are physically ill and therefore more susceptible to the disorder and the panic instances—is the only thing that works. Others also use one of the oldest self-help anxiety disorder treatments—the paper bag.

Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event (such as speaking in public or a first date), anxiety disorders last at least 6 months and can get worse if they are not treated. Anxiety disorders commonly occur along with other mental or physical illnesses, including alcohol or substance abuse, which may mask anxiety symptoms or make them worse. In some cases, these other illnesses need to be treated before a person will respond to treatment for the anxiety disorder. Effective therapies for anxiety disorders are available, and research is uncovering new treatments that can help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives. You may be wondering if the symptoms you have been experiencing are symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Here is a quick self-test you can take to learn more about the symptoms and whether or not you might have GAD. The symptoms we include in the generalized anxiety disorder questionnaire are based on the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition or DSM-IV. This is the manual that mental health providers use to determine whether or not their patients have a particular disorder. These are the "official" criteria for GAD. If you are having any kind of disruptive symptoms or feel that you are overly or excessively anxious, you should talk to your doctor or another trusted healthcare provider. This generalized anxiety questionnaire is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or advice. Please consult your doctor about your symptoms. Click Here To Begin Home About Us Privacy ... Author: Anita McLean, Psy. D. Most people experience feelings of anxiety before an important event such as a big exam, a business presentation, wedding or some other big event. Anxiety disorders, however, are illnesses that fill people's lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear that are chronic, unremitting, and can grow progressively worse. Tormented by panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, flashbacks of traumatic events, nightmares, or countless frightening physical symptoms, some people with anxiety disorders even become housebound or lose functionality to some extent. Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), there are effective treatments that can help. What Are the Different Kinds of Anxiety Disorders?
