What is aplastic anemia?
Aplastic anemia is serious. Children with this disease need treatment quickly to survive. In this disease, the bone marrow shuts down and stops making new blood cells. Bone marrow is found in the soft, spongy center of the long bones of the arms and legs, as well as in the central skeleton, including the spine, skull and hips. The marrow makes immature cells called stem cells. The stem cells, in turn, make the three major types of blood cells:
  • White blood cells Red blood cells Platelets
  • Without enough of these blood cells, children are at risk for serious health problems:
    • Low levels of white blood cells increase the risk of infections.

Lindane's related isomers, alpha and beta hexachlorocyclohexane, are classified as probable human carcinogens and have cancer potencies similar to that of lindane . In addition to tumors identified in experimental animals, human study data indicate that this chemical may cause aplastic anemia (U.S. EPA, 1993a).

    more about Aplastic Anemia

Hypoplastic anemia, refractory anemia or pan-myelo-phthisis
    • Of the many components that make up the cells e.g., red blood cells (carry oxygen), platelets (stop bleeding), white blood cells (fight infection) all are made in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is contained in the long and pelvic bones of the body. When the bone marrow is damaged or destroyed, the result is a lack of production of the cellular productions of blood resulting in aplastic anemia. Toxins, radiation, cancer chemotherapy, and medications are the main causes of this condition.

Aplastic anemia usually presents with bleeding, especially in skin and mucous membranes, or complaints due to anemia. Mortality secondary to infection, especially fungi like Aspergillosis. L defines "super-severe" category. High mortality of "untreated" severe aplastic anemia: <10-20% survival at one year with Differential diagnosis. In secondary cases underlying illness usually obvious from history and physical examination. Distinguish especially: Constitutional aplastic anemia (Fanconi's anemia) in adults. Myelodysplasia may be hypocellular in about 20% of cases. Chromosomal analysis of bone marrow cells is almost always normal in aplastic anemia, myelodysplasia is associated with the 5q- deletion and other cytogenetic abnormalities. There Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. PNH/AA. Acute lymphocytic leukemia in children and acute myelogenous leukemia in the elderly can occasionally present with pancytopenia and marrow hypocellularity. Myelofibrosis has a characteristic blood picture, marrow is dry tap (rather than watery, as in aplastic anemia), and hepatosplenomegaly is common.

This normocytic, normochromic anemia develops as a result of a loss of precursor cells in the bone marrow. Among the various forms of anemias this is quite rare. It occurs as two major forms, the more common defect of all the cell precursors (affecting white blood cell, thrombocyte and red blood cell production); the other less common form affects only RBC production (=erythroblastopenia). 50% of the cases are without any known causes (=idiopathic aplastic anemia), the others are due to genetic factors (below) or secondary to a variety of causes, chemicals (benzene, inorganic arsenic), radiation or medication (the antibiotic chloramphenicol, non steroidal anti-inflammatories used for arthritis, anticonvulsants, gold salts, penicillamine etc.). It is thought that some people are born with a selective hypersensitivity of the bone marrow to some of these causes. Two congenital forms of aplastic anemia are sometimes encountered.

What is aplastic anemia? Aplastic anemia occurs when the bone marrow produces too few of all three types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A reduced number of red blood cells causes hemoglobin to drop. A reduced number of white blood cells makes the patient susceptible to infection. And, a reduced number of platelets causes the blood not to clot as easily. What causes aplastic anemia? Aplastic anemia has multiple causes. Some of these causes are idiopathic, meaning they occur sporadically for no known reason. Other causes are secondary, resulting from a previous illness or disorder. Acquired causes, however, may include the following:
      • history of specific infectious diseases such as infectious hepatitis history of taking certain medications, such as antibiotics and anticonvulsants

    Bone marrow disorder
In aplastic anemia (AA), the bone marrow stops making enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Aplastic anemia may appear at any age, but is diagnosed more often in children and young adults. The disorder occurs in about 2-6 individuals per million population worldwide. About 20% of individuals develop aplastic anemia as part of an inherited syndrome such as Fanconi anemia dyskeratosis congenita , or Blackfan Diamond anemia . Most individuals (80%) have acquired aplastic anemia, meaning that it was caused by infections such as hepatitis or Epstein-Barr virus, toxic exposure to radiation and chemicals, or drugs such as chloramphenical or phenylbutazone. Research suggests aplastic anemia may be the result of an autoimmune disorder.
