Aplastic Anemia
Aplastic anemia is a rare blood disorder that develops when the bone marrow does not produce an adequate number of blood cells needed by the body. “Aplastic” derives from a Greek word that means “no growth” or “low growth.” The bone marrow produces “stem cells” or “primitive” or immature cells that grow into three different kinds of blood cells: red blood cells, which deliver oxygen throughout the body; white blood cells, which battle infections; and platelets, which help the blood to clot. The bone marrow of people with aplastic anemia do not have sufficient stem cells to produce the blood cells needed by the body. Exposure to benzene and certain other toxic solvents and chemicals can be a cause of aplastic anemia. The following are possible symptoms of aplastic anemia:
  • Excessive or easy bleeding, such as bleeding of the nose, gums, and under the skin Easy bruising, particularly bruising with no apparent cause Tiny spots under the skin (called “petechiae”) Pale skin Mouth ulcers Dizziness Chronic fatigue Palpitations Excessive sleeping Decreased alertness Shortness of breath Recurrent fever Slow healing of cuts Recurrent infections Weakness

Anemia, Aplastic
Description
  • Aplastic anemia is defined as pancytopenia and hypocellular bone marrow in the absence of abnormal cell infiltrate. The 2 forms of aplastic anemia include congenital and acquired. Congenital forms are seen mainly in the pediatric population and are associated with physical manifestations. The exception is an atypical presentation of Fanconi syndrome later in adult life, up to the 30s in males and up to 48 years in females. Acquired aplastic anemia has an insidious onset and is caused by exogenous insult triggering an autoimmune reaction. This form is usually responsive to immunosuppressive agents. System(s) affected: Hemic/Lymphatic/Immunologic Synonym(s): Hypoplastic anemia; Panmyelophthisis; Refractory anemia; Aleukia hemorrhagica; Toxic paralytic anemia

ALERT
  • Prednisolone should not be used in treatment of patients with aplastic anemia ( )[C]. Hematopoietic growth factors should not be used without close supervision in newly diagnosed patients ( )[C].

InitAdv(2) Aplastic anemia occurs when the bone marrow produces too few of all types of blood cells: red cells, white cells, and platelet s.
InitAdv(3) Aplastic anemia falls into three basic categories, based on the origin of its cause: idiopathic , acquired, and hereditary.
In about 60% of cases, aplastic anemia is considered to be idiopathic , meaning that the cause of the disorder is unknown.
InitAdv(4) In aplastic anemia , your body stops producing enough new blood cells. This means you're fatigue d and at higher risk of infections and uncontrolled bleeding
InitAdv(5) Aplastic anemia is a bone marrow failure syndrome characterized by peripheral pancytopenia and marrow hypoplasia.

Aplastic Anemia An uncommon disorder characterized by the failure of the bone marrow to produce blood cells. It may occur as an inherited condition (see Fanconi's anemia ) or, more often, the disease develops later in life. This form is called acquired aplastic anemia. It leads to a severe shortage of all types of blood cell causing tiredness, susceptibility to infection, and potentially serious problems with bleeding as a result of a deficiency in blood platelets. The acquired disease is usually the result of an autoimmune attack of lymphocytes against blood cell progenitors preventing normal blood cell formation.

Aplastic Anemia
Aplastic anemia has been directly linked to exposure to toxins such as benzene. Workers are at the highest risk for benzene related illnesses like aplastic anemia. By reducing the amount of exposure to benzene that occurs, workers can avoid serious instances of illness. Learning to recognize signs and symptoms of various occupational risks can help prevent illnesses and conditions such as aplastic anemia to progress into a more serious problem. Symptoms of aplastic anemia can sometimes be mistaken for other more common problems. If an individual has been exposed to benzene and is feeling symptoms of fatigue, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, easy bruising, rash, prolonged bleeding, or has frequent infections this may be an indicator that aplastic anemia is present. Allowing aplastic anemia to progress without being treated can lead to death. If you would like more information on aplastic anemia due to benzene exposure, please

    The Facts
The blood that circulates throughout the body performs a number of critical functions. It delivers oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, and carries life-sustaining nutrients. By acting as the vehicle for long-distance messengers such as hormones, blood helps the various parts of the body communicate with each other. This is carried out by blood cells, working in partnership with the liquid part of the blood ( plasma ). Most of the cells that make up your blood are red blood cells ( erythrocytes ). White blood cells ( leukocytes ), which defend the body against foreign matter, including infections, viruses, and fungi, are also present. Anemia is a condition where the number of healthy red blood cells (RBCs) in the blood is lower than normal.

Aplastic anemia is a condition where bone marrow does not produce sufficient new cell s to replenish blood cells. The term 'aplastic' means the marrow suffers from an aplasia that renders it unable to function properly. Anemia is the condition of having fewer red blood cells than normal, or fewer than needed to function properly. Typically, anemia refers to low red blood cell counts, but aplastic anemia patients have lower counts of all three blood cell types: red blood cells white blood cells , and platelets

    Aplastic anemia
Aplastic anemia is a condition where the bone marrow does not produce enough, or any, new cells to replenish the blood cells. One known cause is an autoimmune disorder , where the white blood cells attack the bone marrow. In many cases, the etiology is impossible to determine, but aplastic anemia is sometimes associated with exposure to substances such as benzene or to the use of certain drugs, including chloramphenicol and phenylbutazone The term 'aplastic' refers to the inability of the marrow to function properly. Anemia is the condition of having fewer blood cells than normal, or fewer than needed to function properly.
