  • Mathematics/Applied Math
I used this lesson after a series of lessons consisting of the following.
  • Percentages Checking accounts Savings accounts Wagesincluding deductions Household expenses Groceries Budgets Reconciling a Bank Statement
Objective: Give the students a real life situation that requires the use of all the knowledge they have learned, so they can put it to use in a realistic situation. Day 1: Give the students "A Life"
a. in advance, write out different scenarios that a student can have (i.e. Single parent with one child age 4, Married with spouse NOT working 3 children ages 4, 5, and 8). b. Write out different jobsMcDonalds, Sales Clerk, Waitress, Teacher, Nurse, etc. Including what their salaries are and whether they get benefits, how often they get paid and so on (or make the students figure this out by looking in a handbook borrowed from the counselor). c. Give each student a checkbook and a certain beginning balance that they each have to start with.

UNIT PRICE
Example 1 Example 2
If you want to compare the costs of goods, you need to determine what units, from one good to the next, you want to compare. You do this by finding the unit price of each good.
Examples:
1. Scott really likes chocolate bars, and wants to get the best deal possible on them. Is it better for him to buy 3 for $2.25 or each one at $ .79 each.
a) Determine the cost of each chocolate bar by dividing $ 2.25 by 3
It is cheaper for Scott to buy 3 chocolate bars for $2.25 because they work out to be $ .75 each compared to $ .79 which they would cost if he bought them separately.
2. Becky eats cereal for breakfast every morning. Is it better for her to buy a 550 g box of cereal for $2.50, or a 1 kg box for $5.00?
a) Work out the cost per gram of the 550 g box (divide by 550)
550 g costs $ 2.50
1 g costs
1 g of cereal from the 550 g box costs $ 0.004545
b) Work out the cost per gram of the 1 kg (1000 g) box
1000 g costs $ 5.00
1 g costs
1 g of cereal from the 1000 g box costs $ 0.005

An Educator's Reference Desk Lesson Plan Submitted by: Shaylah Miller
Email: Shaylah_m@hotmail.com
School/University/Affiliation: Akard Elementary School, Bristol, TN Date: September 21, 1999 Grade Level(s): Subject(s):
  • Mathematics/Applied Math
Duration: 45 minutes Description: The student will demonstrate money using coupons. Goals: Students will practice counting and using money. Objectives:
1. The student will identify coins and values.
2. The student will show amounts of coupons with coins.
3. The student will determine what could be purchased with certain amounts of money Materials:
  • coupons coins price list of various (low priced) items written on board or on a handout candy
Procedure:
Each child is given an assorted group of coupons. For each coupon, the students will show how much money it is worth. Each student must find at least one item that could be purchased with the savings. Extension:
Assessment: The teacher will observe the students while working. After the teacher okay's the work completed, the child will have the opportunity to "pay" the teacher the correct (preset) amount for a piece of candy.

Grade Two Mathematics
The second-grade standards extend the study of number and spatial sense to include three-digit numbers and three-dimensional figures. Students will continue to learn, use, and gain proficiency in the basic addition facts through the nines table and the corresponding subtraction facts. Students will begin to use standard U.S. Customary and metric units of measurement; predict, using simple probability; and create and interpret picture and bar graphs. Students will work with a variety of patterns and will develop knowledge of equality by identifying missing numbers in addition and subtraction facts.
Number Sense 2.1 The student will
  • a) read, write, and identify the place value of each digit in a three-digit numeral, using numeration models; and b) round two-digit numbers to the nearest ten.
2.2 The student will compare two whole numbers between and 999, using symbols (>, <, or =) and words ("greater than," "less than," or "equal to").
2.3 The student will identify the ordinal positions first through twentieth, using an ordered set of objects.

Overview
The Fields Institute Colloquium/Seminar in Applied Mathematics is a monthly colloquium series for mathematicians in the areas of applied mathematics and analysis. The series alternates between colloquium talks by internationally recognized experts in the field, and less formal, more specialized seminars. In recent years, the series has featured applications to diverse areas of science and technology; examples include super-conductivity, nonlinear wave propagation, optical fiber communications, and financial modeling. The intent of the series is to bring together the applied mathematics community on a regular basis, to present current results in the field, and to strengthen the potential for communication and collaboration between researchers with common interests. We meet for one session per month during the academic year. The organizers welcome suggestions for speakers and topics.

Applied mathematics research at Argonne involves the development of appropriate numerical approximations that can provide sufficiently accurate solutions
http://www-fp.mcs.anl.gov/division/research/applied_math.htm
Applied Mathematics
Applied mathematics research at Argonne involves the development of appropriate numerical approximations that can provide sufficiently accurate solutions more efficiently than existing methods. We expect that these gains will come from several sources:
  • approximations that are tuned to the behavior of the solution, parallel methods that use the structure of the solution to achieve higher efficiencies, and better mathematical models of the original problems.
  • We are working with computational scientists to evaluate these new models and assess their domain of validity by means of numerical simulations Ongoing Work in Applied Mathematics
    • Asymptotic Analysis and Domain Decomposition
    • This project addresses the development of asymptotic-enhanced numerical methods for boundary-value problems whose solutions show rapid variations over short distances, as in boundary layers and transition layers (shocks), or over short time intervals (initial layers).
    • Scientific Sonification
    • This project addresses the use of sound, alone or in combination with visual images, for the exploration and analysis of complex data sets. Research focuses on finding coordinates in sound space that optimize the aural perception of given data sets and their salient features. Sonification (the rendering of data in sounds) is done with DIASS, a Digital Instrument for Additive Sound Synthesis. Sound objects are visualized in a VR environment to enhance their aural perception.
