Fragrance products are sometimes marketed with claims or implications that their use will improve personal well-being in a variety of ways, such as "strengthening the body's self-defense mechanisms." These are also known as "behavioral fragrance" or "aromatherapy" products. On the other hand, articles intended for use in the diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and intended to affect the structure or any function of the body, are considered to be drugs with all "new drugs" requiring FDA's premarket approval. While cosmetics and drugs both are under FDA's jurisdiction, the legal requirements applying to them differ. A claim that a perfume's aroma makes a person feel more attractive, in general, is a cosmetic claim not requiring FDA approval before a product is sold. But if someone tries to market a scent suggesting effectiveness as an aid in quitting smoking, as a sleeping aid, or to treat or prevent any other condition or disease, or otherwise affect the body's structure or function, such a claim may cause the product to be regulated as a drug, requiring premarket approval. The agency will make judgments on a case-by-case basis. Claims made in advertising but not on product labeling are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission , although advertising claims can be used to establish a product's intended use. Room fragrance systems (deodorizers, odor control) are the

Did you know that aromatherapy was discovered in the late 1920s? In 1928, French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefoss was working in a laboratory at his family's perfumery. A sudden explosion severely burned his hand, which he quickly plunged into a container of lavender oil. Afterward, he was surprised by how quickly his hand healed. Gattefoss began exploring the therapeutic properties of plants and later coined the term "aromatherapy." For many people, aromatherapy conjures up images of scented oil and candles, maybe a bubble bath at the end of a stressful day. But nowadays aromatherapy is far more than just fragrant lotions and sweet-smelling incense. The Cadillac of diffusers is the nebulizer, a small machine that diffuses essential oils on a current of air. The nebulizer ionizes and suspends very fine oil molecules in the air for maximum effect. An increasing number of health professionals are using aromatherapy to alleviate stress, pain and infection. One key factor in the success of aromatherapy is the nose and its powerful sense of smell.

The use of plant essential oils dates back to the ancient times in Egypt, Italy, India, and China. French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy in 1937, when he witnessed first-hand the healing power of lavender oil on healing skin burns.
Today, aromatherapy is widely practiced in North America and Europe. It is often integrated into holistic treatments, and is used in spa treatments and products such as candles, massage oil, and other relaxation products.
The essential oils used in aromatherapy are plant volatile oils from the flowers, leaves, stems, buds, branches, or roots that have been extracted using steam distillation, water and stem distillation or cold-pressing.

What is Aromatherapy?
People commonly think that “aromatherapy” refers to anything that smells good, like scented candles, potpourri, and perfumes. We use the term “aromatherapy” to refer to the therapeutic application of plant essential oils (usually diluted in some type of solution) by qualified individuals.
Why do I need to know about essential oils?
There is a growing body of research from laboratory and clinical studies that points to the remarkable healing properties of essential oils. They are widely available in markets, co-ops, pharmacies, and also are used in increasing numbers of clinics and hospitals.
While most essential oils are safe and free of adverse side effects when used properly, as an informed consumer. It is important for you to pay attention to dosage, purity, how the oils are being administered, and possible interactions with other medications you might be taking. You should also look for quality products, as there can be big differences between what a professional aromatherapist would use and what is sold in retail stores. (See the section How Do I Determine the Quality of Essential Oils?)

Aromatherapy study shows lemon, lavender cause no physical changes

Aromatherapy may be relaxing, but smelling lemon and lavender didn't alter biology, researchers at Ohio State University said.
JoNel Aleccia Health writer MSNBC JoNel Aleccia Health writer document.write('') E-mail document.write(''); Here’s some unsettling news for anyone who ever sniffed a scented candle, essential oil or pricey pillow spray, hoping for healing or another kind of physical boost. It doesn’t work. At least that’s the verdict on two of the heavy hitters in the world of aromatherapy: lemon and lavender. Researchers at Ohio State University conducted what they say is the most scientifically rigorous test of physical changes caused by smelling the popular scents — and came up with nothing. Oh, lemon oil certainly boosted mood, husband-and-wife scientists Ronald Glaser and Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser report in the March issue of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
