Arthritis: Timely Treatments for an Ageless Disease
by Carol Lewis MYTH: Arthritis affects only older people. FACT: Arthritis affects any age, including children. There's no question that the incidence of arthritis increases with age, but nearly three of every five sufferers are under age 65. MYTH: Arthritis is just minor aches and pains. FACT: Arthritis can be permanently debilitating. MYTH: Arthritis cannot be treated. FACT: The FDA recently approved several new treatments for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The fact is, these myths keep people from seeking a doctor's help against the number one cause of disability in the United States, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Arthritis disables more Americans than heart disease and stroke, and the CDC says it's what Americans don't know about the disease that can hurt them. "People ignore arthritis both as public and personal health problems because it doesn't kill you," says Chad Helmick, a medical epidemiologist at the CDC. "But what they don't realize is that as Americans work and live longer, arthritis can affect their quality of life and eventually lead to disability." Current costs to the U.S. economy total nearly $65 billion annually-an impact equal to a moderate recession.

Arthritis
Arthritis is a pain in the joints
Introduction
The canine skeletal system is a marvel of bones, cartilage, and ligaments that provide the body with a framework to erect on four strong legs, protect internal organs, and provide a full range of motion. The muscles furnish the power to propel the dog into action, but without healthy bones, joints, and connective tissue, the muscles cannot do their job. Joints — the skeletal hinges — give the skeleton flexibility for walking, trotting, running, jumping, climbing, and moving the head and neck to increase the field of vision. The dog's body has three types of joints: ball and socket such as the hip and shoulder joints; hinged joints such as the knees and elbows; and gliding or plane joints such as the wrists and ankles. The joints are lubricated for smooth action by synovial fluid and are stabilized by tendons and ligaments. When the joints are damaged by injury or disease, arthritis (joint inflammation) can occur. “He has arthritis” is probably the most common reaction of the pet owner whose Fido or Fluffy is stiff-legged after exercise, has trouble getting up in the morning, or is reluctant to go up or down stairs. But since such stiffness or lameness can have several causes and since arthritis itself comes in different types, a trip to the veterinarian is a more prudent move than slipping the pooch a couple of aspirin for the discomfort.

You may have heard about arthritis (say: ar- thry -tus), which is a disease that causes swelling and pain in a person's joints. But isn't it something that only old people get? Actually, kids can get a kind of arthritis called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. (It's called JRA for short and "juvenile" means young.) Kids can have many different types of arthritis, but JRA is the most common. Joints are the places where bones meet. Arthritis can prevent people from moving their joints properly. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (say: joo -vuh-nil roo -muh-toid ar- thry -tus) affects kids under age 16. These kids have arthritis in one or more joints. Many problems can cause pain and swelling of the joints, so a doctor will want to know how long these problems have been going on. To be considered JRA, a kid must have swelling and pain for at least 6 weeks. Although it has a similar name, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is not the same as the kind of arthritis that affects adults. Although some of the symptoms may be similar, JRA doesn't damage bones as quickly as the rheumatoid arthritis that affects older people.

In the advanced stages of skeletal fluorosis, the spine may closely resemble the appearance of spondylosis/spondylitis and DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis).

    Description
An in-depth report on the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of rheumatoid arthritis.
    Alternative Names
    Arthritis - rheumatoid
    Symptoms
The hallmark symptom of rheumatoid arthritis is morning stiffness that lasts for at least an hour. (Stiffness from osteoarthritis, for instance, usually clears up within half an hour.) Even after remaining motionless for a few moments, the body can stiffen. Movement becomes easier again after loosening up.
    Swelling and Pain
Swelling and pain in the joints must occur for at least 6 weeks before a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is considered. The inflamed joints are usually swollen and often feel warm and "boggy" when touched. The pain often occurs symmetrically but may be more severe on one side of the body, depending on which hand the person uses more often.
    Specific Joints Affected
Although rheumatoid arthritis almost always develops in the wrists and knuckles, the knees and joints of the ball of the foot are often affected as well. Indeed, many joints may be involved, even causing the spine to become misaligned. It does not usually show up in the fingertips, where osteoarthritis is common, but joints at the base of the fingers are often painful.

Many people start to feel pain and stiffness in their bodies over time. Sometimes their hands or knees or shoulders get sore and are hard to move and may become swollen. These people may have arthritis (ar-THRY-tis). Arthritis may be caused by inflammation (in-flah-MAY-shun), of the tissue lining the joints. Some signs of inflammation include redness, heat, pain, and swelling. These problems are telling you that something is wrong. Joints are places where two bones meet, such as your elbow or knee. Over time, in some types of arthritis but not in all, the joints involved can become severely damaged. There are different types of arthritis. In some diseases in which arthritis occurs, other organs, such as your eyes, your chest, or your skin, can also be affected. Some people may worry that arthritis means they won’t be able to work or take care of their children and their family. Others think that you just have to accept things like arthritis. It’s true that arthritis can be painful. But there are things you can do to feel better. This booklet tells you some facts about arthritis and gives you some ideas about what to do, so you can keep doing many of the things you enjoy.

It has been proven effective in easing osteoarthritis pain, rehabilitating cartilage, renewing synovial fluid, and repairing joints that have been damaged from osteoarthritis. Each person and animal produces a certain amount of glucosamine within their bodies. As you grow older, your body loses the capacity to make enough glucosamine, so the cartilage in your weight-bearing joints, such as the hips, knees, and hands is destroyed, then hardens and forms bone spurs, causing pain, deformed joints, limited joint movement and limping.
