Home All Art Prints in Stock Artists M - Artists Claude Monet Claude Monet Claude Monet (1840-1923) is recognised as the leader of the Impressionist movement. He began his career as a caricaturist, but began to paint outdoors and in 1860 went to Paris to study. Meeting Renoir, Manet and Cezanne, among others, he began to develop the luminous style associated with impressionism. After a visit to England where he was influenced by Turner, he returned to France, to Argenteuil and set up his studio in a boat. Always fascinated by reflections in water, and by the effect of light at different times of day and season, Monet moved over time to almost abstract painting in work such as his Water lilies panels.
