Story Our entire military fleet is currently at war with the Martians and, as fate would have it, the asteroid field is too far away from Mars to reassign a Commander. You are the only armed ship within reach of the field. Your mission is simple: Eliminate all asteroids. Our information sources believe gravitational forces have banded the asteroid field into eight waves. This will provide time between each wave to repair your ship. almandine carconite , a rare, highly explosive mineral which is normally only safe at extremely low temperatures. This means a single shot from a laser turret will suffice to blow the asteroid into pieces, but be warned! The explosion will be so large that you are advised to stay well back. A severe explosion could interfere with your guidance systems, or ultimately obliterate your ship.

Asteroids
Introduction
In addition to the Sun and the major planets with their satellites, the solar system is populated with numerous comets and asteroids. These small bodies are the remains from the formation of the solar system some 5 billion years ago. Contrary the terrestrial planets, which are more or less geologically evolved, many comets and asteroids are to a large extent preserved in their pristine condition. Most asteroids are found in the main-belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and are most probably the remains of a planet that failed to form, due to the perturbations of Jupiter. An almost equally large population is the Trojan asteroids, which are trapped in the two Lagrangian points 60 degrees ahead of and behind Jupiter in its orbit. Another important group is the near-Earth asteroids, where several are on Earth-crossing orbits and may pose a potential threat upon the Earth The study of asteroids is one important key to the understanding of the early solar system. The evolution of the asteroids and their interactions in the present-day solar system are also important issues. There are many open questions related to the distribution of mass, angular momentum, and chemical composition in the main-belt. The few images available of asteroids show highly irregular shapes, indicating violent histories of impacts and collisions. The traditional distinction between comets and asteroids seems to become increasingly more vague with new discoveries of borderline and transitional objects.

Their spectacular appearance in the night sky, with wide bright tails , has inspired awe and even been considered an omen Asteroids, comets and other cosmic debris have also had a fundamental impact on the development of planet Earth and the life on it, by bombarding it constantly at first, and periodically since. Future impacts pose a significant threat to human civilisation. Comets are incredibly numerous - astronomers predict as many as one trillion could exist in the outer reaches of our solar system. Bright comets, however, appear in our skies just once a decade on average. The brightest recent ones were comets Hale-Bopp in 1996 and Hyakutake in 1997. Perhaps the most interesting recent comet was Shoemaker-Levy 9 . This broke apart into dozens of pieces which then crashed into Jupiter in 1994 more...

    NASA Considers Manned Asteroid Mission
What would happen if we spot a Near- Earth is at us. An asteroid named 2000SG344 (which threatened the Earth in the year 2000) is being considered as the destination for the first manned asteroid mission. The asteroid astronauts will travel there, chasing the 28,000 mi/hr (45,000 km/hr) speeding body and then carry out experiments, living on it for up to two weeks. Why? To briefly establish a manned outpost, advancing science and technology toward the ultimate goal: Mars.

ASTEROIDS
Debris in the Solar System
When the Solar System formed, not everything was used to make planets and moons, leftovers became asteroids and comets. They are perhaps the oldest remnants of the early Solar System and what we learn from them tells us about our own early history. Most of the asteroids lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, but some have very elliptical orbits which bring them very close to Earth. They range in size from about 30% the diameter of our moon to pebble sized objects. In number, there are probably billion of asteroids in the solar system. The largest known asteroid is Ceres which was the first asteroid to be discovered in 1801. Ceres is about 1/3 the size of our moon. It can be seen in amateur telescopes if one knows where and when to look. Most asteroids are of the small irregular variety. None of them are large enough to have high enough gravity to pull themselves into spherical shape. Images of the same asteroid vary in brightness which confirms the irregular shape. The Galileo spacecraft passed through the asteroid belt twice on its way to Jupiter. The spacecraft passed only 16.000 km from the asteroid Gaspra in 1990 and returned excellent images. Gaspra is an oblong world measuring 20 by 12 by 11 km. It is covered by a layer of shattered soil about a meter deep. There are also numerous craters on Gaspra's surface.

It was difficult or even impossible for an observer of asteroids to book time using the world's best telescopes, because they were regarded as unspectacular objects that could tell us little about the origins of the universe. However, that has all changed. It is now thought that asteroids are the unused building blocks of planets, 'pristine material' that has remained chemically unchanged since the creation of the solar system; a snapshot of matter at the beginning of time. At the moment the Japanese probe Hayabusa is 180 million miles away, pinned to the back of the asteroid Itokawa, attempting to gain our first samples of the chemical composition of an asteroid.

Asteroids
An asteroid is a small, solid object in our Solar System, orbiting the Sun. An asteroid is an example of a minor planet (or planetoid). These minor planets are much smaller than the small planets such as Mercury or Mars. It is believed that most asteroids are remnants of the protoplanetary disc. The incorporation of these remnants into the planets during the formation of the Solar System was prevented by large gravitational perturbations induced by Jupiter. Some asteroids have moons. The vast majority of the asteroids are within the main asteroid belt, with elliptical orbits between those of Mars and Jupiter. In the last years of the 18th century, Baron Franz Xaver von Zach organized a group of 24 astronomers to search the sky for the "missing planet" predicted at about 2.8 AU from the Sun by the Titius-Bode law, partly as a consequence of the discovery, by Sir William Herschel in 1781, of the planet Uranus at the distance "predicted" by the law. This task required that hand-drawn sky charts be prepared for all stars in the zodiacal band down to an agreed-upon limit of faintness. On subsequent nights, the sky would be charted again and any moving object would, hopefully, be spotted. The expected motion of the missing planet was about 30 seconds of arc per hour, readily discernable by observers.Ironically, the first asteroid, 1 Ceres, was not discovered by a member of the group, but rather by accident in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi director, at the time, of the observatory of Palermo, in Sicily.

    Asteroids
Asteroids are primoridal objects left over from the formation of the Solar System. While some have suggested that they are the remains of a protoplanet that was destroyed in a massive collision long ago, the prevailing view is that asteroids are leftover rocky matter that never successfully coalesced into a planet. Most planetary astronomers still believe that the planets of the Solar System formed from a nebula of gas and dust and ices that coalesced into a dusty disk around the developing Sun . Within the disk, tiny dust grains (and ices in the colder environs beginning around two AUs inside of Jupiter's orbit) coagulated into larger and larger bodies called planetesimals, many of which eventually accreted into planets over a period as long as a 100 million years. However, beyond the orbit of

Other sub-planetary objects, considered distinct from asteroids, are Centaurs Kuiper Belt objects , and comets , though classification is ambiguous in some cases. Some of the smaller moons in the solar system appear to be captured asteroids, including the two moons of Mars, and a number of the outer moons of the four gas giants.
Asteroids range in size from a few meters to over 900 km across, and vary greatly in composition. Although none is visible to the naked eye, many can be seen at times with binoculars or small telescopes, including the four largest: (1)

Asteroids
by Paul Neave
Let me take you back... back to a world before pixels. In those days, all people had were lines. A company called Atari had recently wowed crowds with their clever use of lines in a game called Pong, but now this line technology had advanced.
It was 1979, and lines could be made to look like spaceships and big rocks and more flying saucers, as long as you squinted a little. And so, Asteroids was born.
You float in space and shoot the asteroids, but the more you shoot, the more asteroids you create. And be careful: you only have one ship for each 10,000 points scored.
