Asthma
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Asthma causes the airways of the lungs to swell and become narrower. This can make it hard to breathe and cause wheezing as you breathe in and out. Asthma cannot be cured, but can be relieved with medicine. Repeat attacks are common.
Causes
Triggers may include pollen, dust, animals, molds, some foods, lung infections, smoke, exercise, high amounts of air pollution, or stress.
Signs/Symptoms
Common symptoms include trouble breathing, a tight feeling in the chest, and wheezing. During a bad asthma attack, you may sweat and have real difficulty breathing. Your lips and nailbeds may turn a pale or blue color, your heart may beat faster and you may become very anxious. If this happens, call 911 or (operator) to get help immediately.

This inflammation can cause minor wheezing to extremely labored breathing. Mortality rates are low because the condition is manageable and there are warning signs that attacks are coming. Diagnosis is sometimes difficult in older adults because symptoms may be confused with other lung diseases such as bronchitis. Also, older Americans should be careful when taking asthma medications with other medications they may already be taking to avoid any adverse reactions.

Toward Developing A New Class Of Asthma And Allergy Drugs
ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2008) See also: At present, the majority of treatments for asthma and allergies focus on reducing symptoms such as an inflamed airway or runny nose and itchy eyes. Because allergies are essentially an over-the-top immune response to allergens (such as dust, peanuts, or insect bites), it is possible to give a treatment that dampens down the immune system. However this is very risky, leaving the person vulnerable to infection, and so is only used in the most extreme cases - for most people treatments that manage the symptoms of allergy are the best option. The BBSRC team led by Professor Bart Vanhaesebroeck has shown that by targeting a molecule called p110delta it is possible to interfere in the allergic reaction before symptoms occur, but without shutting down the immune system. p110delta is a member of a family of eight proteins called PI3Ks, which control important biological functions. Their activity is implicated in many different diseases including cancer and they are an important target for drugs. However, drugs that act on all PI3K family members tend to be toxic in the body. For this reason Professor Vanhaesebroeck's team uses genetic techniques to find out which PI3K family members are linked to specific diseases. By gaining a better understanding of each PI3K they hope to target drugs more specifically and reduce the potential for side effects.

(Free Handout)
Overview
Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs and airways that affects an estimated 14 million to 17 million people in the United States. Severe asthma is a serious health concern that can lead to respiratory failure and death. Asthma kills an estimated 5000 people a year in the United States and as many as 470,000 seek hospital treatment for asthma symptoms. Despite its prevalence, experts differ in the definition of the disease. Clinical authorities typically favor a broad, comprehensive definition. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute , for example, defines asthma as:
"a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways (which causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning) usually associated with widespread but variable airflow obstruction that is often reversible, either spontaneously or with treatment."

Organizations geared primarily toward the informational needs of patients usually promote, simpler, more "user-friendly" definitions. The

Fish Oils and Asthma
Summaries of the latest research concerning fish oils and asthma Diet rich in fish may help prevent childhood asthma
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. Childhood asthma is now a major health problem in Australia with 31% of West Australian children having been diagnosed with the condition. Chronic inflammation of the airways is also a major problem with 12% of the population reporting wheeze severe enough to disturb sleep. Studies involving Australian school children have shown that those who consume oily fish more than once a week have a significantly reduced risk of asthma. Australian researchers now suggest that the epidemic of childhood asthma is associated with a change in the omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio in the Australian diet. It used to be around 5:1, but is now 15:1 or higher. They recently concluded a study of 355 school children of which 166 had been diagnosed with asthma at 6 years of age and the remaining 169 acted as asthma-free controls. A comparison of the two groups showed that the significant risk factors for asthma were:
  • Gestational age less than 37 months (OR=2.93)
