edit Overview
Astrophotography ranges from simple images of bright objects to very complex exposures designed to reveal objects that are too faint to observe with the naked eye. With only a few exceptions, almost all astrophotography employs time exposures since both film and digital cameras can accumulate and sum light photons over long periods of time. This is just one of many distinct aspects of astrophotography that sets it apart from conventional photography. Astrophotography poses challenges that are distinct from normal photography, because most subjects are usually quite faint, and are often small in angular size. Effective astrophotography requires the use of many of the following techniques:

You may have seen some of the beautiful photographs of sky objects that have been taken over the years by contributors to SPACE.com . Perhaps you've even wondered whether it might be possible for you to take photos of the night sky. The answer is most definitely "yes." In fact, making the transition from normal photography to astrophotography is relatively easy. Astrophotography is a special adaptation of ordinary photography. You can make some interesting photographs of stars even with inexpensive equipment. The basics A fixed 35 mm camera should be mounted on a sturdy tripod to hold it rock steady. Try also to use a tripod with a three-way pan head. This makes it easier to aim your camera and frame the desired field. The camera must have a "B" or "T" setting, to allow the shutter to remain open for as long as you want. Many automatic cameras can't do this. You'll need a cable release to allow tripping the shutter and locking it open without physically touching the shutter button, which can cause vibration. Don't try to hold the shutter button down with your finger - jiggling of the camera is almost inevitable.

    A BASIC PRIMER ON ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
© 1997 By: Jim Pennington It was said by a good friend of mine that astrophotographers are masochists. In a sense, I suppose he is correct. Astrophotography can test one's patience and dedication to the limits and at the same time be both satisfying and rewarding. Photographing the night sky can be done by anyone if they are willing to put forth the time and effort in learning the nuances of this hobby. Equipment requirements range from nothing but a simple camera and tripod to a multi- thousand dollar computer controlled telescope equipped with a CCD autoguider and seperate guidescope. I suppose the greatest allure of astrophotography is the challenge to be successful at it. As I mentioned above, it is not impossible to learn but neither is it easy. Going outside and hand holding a camera on the stars will not work. A bit of preparation and knowing what you are doing is essential for success.
Basic Concepts and a Description of the Equipment Used
    The Basic Concepts and Equipment
    Rigid Camera Mountings
Tripod mounted cameras are limited to relatively short exposures of 15 seconds or less and a lens of no more than 100mm focal length is recommended. The reason for this is that longer focal length lenses produce less field of view on the film and therefore more magnification. As magnification goes up, we start running into the problem of "trailing" of the stars due to the earth's rotation and the apparent movement of the stars across the sky. The stars will no longer appear to be "dots" but will begin to resemble streaks which will get longer if the magnification goes up or the exposure time increases.

Current Moon Phase Getting Started in Astrophotography www.my-spot.com Astronomy by Frank My experience with astrophotography has been rewarding and frustrating at the same time. While I no longer consider myself to be a beginner in this area of photography, it is still certainly the most difficult form of photography and one requires a bit of research. I hope that this will help a few of you in your astrophotography attempts. However, it should be known that the face of Astrophotography is changing in very much the same way general photography is... Digital... Please bare in mind that this artical began its life back before the Digital Revolution in photography. DIGITAL vs. FILM The Digital Revolution in Photography has changed the natural path of getting started Astrophotography. The advantages of Digital can be huge. The problem is that the first step of getting into Digital Astrophotography can be much much larger in terms of cost and effort. The average "point and shoot" digital camera is not well suited for astrophotography. The lowest level of suitable digital camera for astrophotography would be a dSLR (digital Single Lens Reflex - The kind with interchangable lenses - however there ARE some who have achieved very good results with what are often called digicams). The issue is then cost. An entry level dSLR tend (as of this writing) to cost $700(USD) and a dedicated CCD astrocamera can cost many thousands of $$$. A great older mechanical Film SLR like the ones mentioned below can be found for less then $75 used.

Taking pictures of the night sky is easier than you think. Just load some film, mount the camera on a tripod and open the shutter for a few seconds. You don't need an expensive telescope or other sophisticated equipment to be an astrophotographer. If you've taken pictures of a sunset or thin crescent moon then you've already been exposed to this great hobby. I hope the following information will provided you with some ideas of your own regarding astrophotography. I tried to cover all the major topics concerning simple "wide field" tripod astrophotography from equipment to final photograph. If you have any suggestions or ideas that maybe helpful then please drop me a line (krcool@hiwaay.net) . Thanks for visiting. Clear Skies... Equipment Things To Consider Gallery I Gallery II

Ideally the camera type best suited for astrophotography is a 35mm SLR with interchangeable lenses (See "Anatomy of a SLR" below for an example). It may be the camera you put away in the closet after buying one of the new fully
