22. Astrophotography By Noel Carboni
Another wide angle high resolution shot through my 1740 zoom lens, which is proving to be a great performer for astrophotography.

Astrophotography by Noel Carboni
On this page you'll find some of the astrophotos I've taken. Unless otherwise noted, these images were captured with my Canon EOS-20D digital camera or Meade Lunar/Planetary Imager and Meade 10" LX200 GPS UHTC 2500mm f/10 telescope from my light-polluted south Florida home. Multiple exposures stacked in Images Plus and processed in Photoshop with my own Astronomy Tools actions set.
My Latest Astrophotos
The Moon in Hypersaturated Color Stacked from 15 exposures of 1/5 second at ISO 100 This image is a mosaic of 15 separate and slightly overlapping 8.2 megapixel images from my Canon EOS-20D (unmodified), taken in Raw mode and converted and stitched together in Photoshop CS2. The exposures were each 1/5 second at ISO 100. I mounted my 20D to my Meade LX200 GPS UHTC 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope via my 2x Televue Powermate (a focal length doubler, similar to a teleconverter, which also serves to mate my camera to the 2" telescope eyepiece tube). Effective focal length was 5000mm f/20. Looking through the viewfinder I swept across the surface in a zig-zag fashion, trying for about 1/3 overlap between frames. I triggered the shutter with my TC80-N3 remote timer/controller. I did the stitching by hand in Photoshop.

astrophotography
Use of photography in astronomical research. The first successful photograph of a celestial object was the daguerreotype plate of the Moon taken by English Scientist John W Draper in March 1840. The first photograph of a star, Vega, was taken by US astronomer William Bond in 1850. Modern-day astrophotography uses techniques such as charge-coupled devices (CCDs), which are often carried aboard a spacecraft.

29. Saturday Morning Science: Auroras, City Lights And Astrophotography
I don t believe that the ISS was designed for astronomy, adds Pettit, but it functions very well as a platform for astrophotography.

Space Station Astrophotography
Astronauts onboard the International Space Station are capturing some amazing photos of the night sky.
Listen to this story via streaming audio , a downloadable file , or get help March 24, 2003: It's a weird place for an astronomer. Meteors fly underfoot. Auroras appear just inches in front of your nose. City lights twinkle, but stars don't. Astronaut Don Pettit loves every minute of it. "There's always something good to see out the window of the space station," says Pettit, who happens to be an amateur astronomer as well as the science officer of the International Space Station (ISS). Right : Astronaut Don Pettit, Expedition Six ISS science officer, takes pictures of Earth through a window in the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). [ more "Lately we've been having some extraordinary auroras," he reports. "They meander like big green amoebas crawling across the sky. Sometimes there is a faint touch of red layered above the green. These lights are constantly changing. They swirl. Bright spots come and go. Green blobs transform into upward-directed rays topped by red feathery structures." Long before he went to live onboard the space station, Pettit was an avid aurora watcher. "I've taken photos of the Northern Lights from Alaska and Canada," he says. Some of those displays were magnificent, but "the view from station is even better."
