Contents: INTRODUCTION This article is mainly for those who have only a small telescope, and is intended to show you just what can be done with such an instrument. Even if you also have a larger instrument it is good to know what your old observing buddy can do since its portability will likely allow you to take it along when you travel. Besides, using a small telescope is just plain fun! All photos shown here were taken with a 4" aperture or smaller instrument. We will cover the full spectrum of available subjects, from terrestrial and lunar to planets and deep-sky objects. As will be seen, small telescopes are capable of producing good photos of deep-sky objects, even at relatively large image scales, with today's fast color films. Since finances may be a factor for many, a minimum of accessory equipment will be stressed for each application.

    (v2.0.3, Last Updated: 6/6/06)
Is your wife an Astronomy Widow ? Face it, you spend far too many nights ignoring your sweetheart and playing with your telescope. Tell her how much you love her by purchasing a unique piece of jewelry from our sponsor:
    Preface
This is nearly a complete re-write of the previous version of my astrophotography cookbook. The fundamental changes between this version and the previous are:
    • My acquisition order is now: Flat Dark, Flat Light, Light, Dark. I no longer capture nor use Offsets.
    • I now use a Light Box for Flats (as opposed to using the twilight sky).
    • My new Canon Rebel XT (350D) requires a new version of DSLRfocus for focusing and capture.
    • With some wonderful new features in IRIS, my processing flow is more logical and more robust.

A Wide-Field Astrophotography Page
Welcome to my wide-field astrophotography page! Notice that I call it "A" wide-field astrophotography page. The information is not intended to be comprehensive by any means. The emphasis here is on astrophotography with SLR film cameras and simple tracking equipment. Other than a recent (Nov 2003) rescan of the photos to much improve their digital appearance, these pages have not been updated for a while. Most of this information dates back to 1996-7, but much of it is still useful, even if you are using a digital SLR.
  • Who am I?
More information about me and how these pages came about.
  • Equipment
Information about cameras, lenses, film, etc.
  • Barndoor drives
Includes detailed plans for building a simple barndoor drive like the ones I've used to take the photos on these pages.
  • Targets
Recommended targets for your camera, including images.
  • Numbers
Field-of-view, plate scale, relative light gathering power, etc. for different lenses.
  • Astrophoto Gallery
A more extensive portfolio of my images than given in the "Targets" link above.
All photos on these pages are Brian Rachford. You may download a copy of each image for personal use. Educational use is generally fine, too, but any publication of the images requires my permission.

Information

Welcome to the astrophotography corner of my personal web site. Here you'll find my photos of astronomical objects ranging from nearby subjects such as meteors, the moon, planets, and the sun, to distant objects such as gas and dust clouds and star clusters inside our galaxy, to galaxies outside our own Milky Way galaxy. My special interests are wide-field photos (as opposed to highly magnified views such as from the Hubble telescope), and especially of challenging transient targets such as meteors, comets, and eclipses. For most of these photos, I prefer to continue to shoot film, though you will also find some electronic images here too. I welcome any questions or comments you care to send, especially if you are also interested in astrophotography. I hope the technical info I have on the site will aid and encourage your own astrophotography efforts.

Book description At first glance, the challenge of astrophotography may appear daunting. But not only are spectacular results possible, they are easy to learn with the step-by-step instructions provided in Stephan Seip's Digital Astrophotography: A Guide to Capturing the Cosmos . Today, amateurs can produce images that only twenty years ago a large professional observatory would have been proud of; and this book shows you how. Learn how to:
  • Set up your camera for optimum results
  • Focus your camera for razor-sharp images
  • Take beautiful night shots with a simple compact digital camera, a tripod, and a telescope
  • Use a DSLR camera to shoot the Sun, Moon, stars, star clusters, and nebulae through your telescope
  • Get brilliant images of planets with a Webcam
  • Capture remote galaxies with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera just like a pro
  • Select which cameras are best for the various celestial objects, what to look for when buying a camera, and what accessories you really need, from a simple camera and tripod to highly specialized equipment.

Updated 31 July 2001 Welcome to Joe Roberts Astrophotography! On this site you will find amateur astrophotos which I have taken over the period 1974 to present. Unlike many similar sites, within are images that are typical of beginner results (in addition to some decent images of course!). Such images will help to give those who are contemplating astrophotography as a hobby some idea of what to expect at first. Astrophotography is a very challenging and demanding field! However, technology has made astrophotography easier than it has ever been. Improved films, CCD cameras, and digital image processing now allow an amateur to take photos that rival those taken by large observatory telescopes 20 to 30 years ago. Use the menu buttons below to further explore! NOTE: You might want to Calibrate Your Monitor in order to best view the images on this site.
