Jupiter
The weather in this area is turning nicer and with that, I find myself hauling out the 'scope more and more often. Tonight I focused on Jupiter and its Galilean moons and our own Moon. Clouds slowly rolled over the sky from the southeast and prompted a most hasty telescope setup. Once ready, I went straight for the high power (10mm) eyepiece and was dazzled by the giant planet and four of its many moons. Sarah was present and she was likewise blown away at the sight. Our Orion telescope did exactly what I'd hoped in revealing multiple bands of clouds on Jupiter as well as allowing us to see the shadow of one of the moons (my bet lies with Io) on Jupiter's atmosphere!
Thanks to a graphical ephemeris of Jupiter and it's moons found at http://www.calsky.com/cs.cgi/Planets/6/6

Many people are familiar with the brighter well known constellations of the Zodiac, there are of course many more to seen in night sky. You may notice some of the images appear upside down but this how I see them from the southern hemisphere.
.: milky way
On southern hemisphere winter nights the milky way is a truly spectacular sight. From my location it stretches horizon to horizon, the dense starry area of Scorpius and Sagittarius passing directly overhead. I never tire of taking pictures of this part of the sky.
.: moon
The Moon is seen by everyone and can be a beautiful sight as it rises or sets in sky. It can light the landscape in an eerie light and sometimes glow orange during a lunar eclipse. It's changing phases mark the passage of time.

The Digital Revolution...
In the span of less than four years, the swift evolution of digital cameras has created a new and powerful tool for amateur astronomers—the digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. Now, for the first time, backyard astronomers have access to an easy-to-use technological marvel capable of a remarkable range of astronomical imaging. The digital SLR cameras that have achieved the most impressive results in our tests are the Nikon D70, Canon 300D Digital Rebel (both 6 megapixels) and the Canon 20D (8 megapixels). While CCD cameras are still the method of choice for the top astrophotographers, results during the past year—in our opinion, almost as good—are being achieved with these latest digital cameras, and all at a fraction of the cost of the top-of-the-line dedicated CCD astrocameras.

Pinhole Astrophotography Now you're probably wondering ... at a time when, the bigger the optic - the better the observing (otherwise known as aperture fever) where is this guy coming from. Well ... some years ago (ca. 1990-91) I wanted to know what the limits of observing with the minimum of optics might be. I wondered if sunspots could be visible through a pinhole camera. It turned into a physics project that I eventually published in TPO Magazine titled: " PINHOLE SUNSPOTS - Or, Could the Ancient Egyptians Have Observed Sunspots? ". Anyway, this is about that project as well as some links to other pinhole sites, including one that uses a CCD camera and pinholes to observe stars. - BDM.
PINHOLE SUNSPOTS
or, Could the Ancient Egyptians Have Observed Sunspots?

Could the early Egyptians have viewed sunspots? Or, for that matter, is it even possible that any early peoples could have observed these solar blemishes before the discovery of the telescope and its application to astronomy by Galileo? Non-telescopic observations are not limited to just ‘naked-eye’ observing on a hazy day as one might surmise. There is one optical device for which the technology has been available for thousands of years if some curious individuals were only around to serendipitously stumble upon it. This technology is that of the pinhole camera, an optical instrument consisting of only a small circular hole and a screen upon which to project an image. Pinhole observation of sunspots? Hum-bug, you say? Well, maybe not.

How-To: Astrophotography 101
Don't put that camera away when it gets dark, get outside and take pictures! A whole universe of wonderful images awaits you.
By Paul LeFevre
April 2007
© Paul LeFevre The California Nebula in the constellation Perseus; a four-hour exposure with a digital camera. Click photo to launch a gallery of images. Our cameras get most of their workouts during the daytime, when there's plenty of light from the sun to illuminate our subjects. If we shoot at night, it's usually with a flash attached to brighten things up, or with long exposures using man-made light from our streets or houses. That big dark sky above us at night seems to offer little that we can see or photograph... but that's not the case. There's not just a whole other world of things to take pictures of in that dark sky there's a whole universe of opportunity. This how-to article will provide the basics to let you start taking dramatic photos of the sky at night. Astrophotography is the name given to the process of taking pictures of anything not on the Earth, but out in space. Most of us probably think of images from the Hubble Space Telescope when the word is mentioned, but making good astrophotos doesn't require billions of dollars or a ride in the Space Shuttle. This article will show you how to start making photos with equipment almost every photographer has on hand, progress to the next level with some simple equipment you can buy inexpensively or make yourself, and finish with what you can do if you decide to invest in some specialized (and sometimes expensive) equipment.
