Atheism for children is how some people describe the new children's fantasy film and the books from which it derives. "The anti-Narnia" is how some supporters of the filmnot just criticssee it.
Pullman is widely acclaimed by critics and readers for his best-selling series. But he has been criticized by many for attacking Christianity and promoting atheism.
What is the truth about Pullman and his books? What does he believe about God, religion, Christianity, the Catholic Church, and atheism? What does he hope his books will accomplish? Why does he express such strong disdain for the fiction of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien? Should children be reading the His Dark Materials trilogy, or watching the film version of The Golden Compass , the first book of the trilogy?
These are just some of the many important questions addressed by Sandra Miesel and Pete Vere in their accessible, concise, and thoroughly-researched analysis of Pullmans fiction and beliefs.
The authors reveal the many premises, and often surprising literary and philosophical sources and symbols of the popular

Folks tend to forget that during our founding, it wasn't the atheists or the civil libertarians who were the most effective champions of the First Amendment. It was the persecuted minorities, it was Baptists like John Leland who didn't want the established churches to impose their views on folks who were getting happy out in the fields and teaching the scripture to slaves. It was the forbearers of the evangelicals who were the most adamant about not mingling government with religious, because they did not want state-sponsored religion hindering their ability to practice their faith as they understood it.

The Philosophy of Atheism
by Emma Goldman
First published in February 1916 in the Mother Earth journal. To give an adequate exposition of the Philosophy of Atheism, it would be necessary to go into the historical changes of the belief in a Deity, from its earliest beginning to the present day. But that is not within the scope of the present paper. However, it is not out of place to mention, in passing, that the concept God, Supernatural Power, Spirit, Deity, or in whatever other term the essence of Theism may have found expression, has become more indefinite and obscure in the course of time and progress. In other words, the God idea is growing more impersonal and nebulous in- proportion as the human mind is learning to understand natural phenomena and in the degree that science pro- gressively correlates human and social events. God, today, no longer represents the same forces as in the beginning of His existence; neither does He direct human destiny with the same Iron hand as of yore. Rather does the God idea express a sort of spiritualistic stimalus to satisfy the fads and fancies of every shade of human weak- ness. In the course of human development the God idea has been forced to adapt itself to every phase of human affairs, which is perfectly consistent with the origin of the idea itself. The conception of gods originated in fear and curiosity. Primitive man, unable to understand the phenomena of nature and harassed by them, saw in every terrifying manifestation some sinister force expressly directed against him; and as ignorance and fear are the parents of all super- stition, the troubled fancy of primitive man wove the God idea.

OF
ATHEISM OF
SUPERSTITION
It were better to have no opinion of God at all, than such an opinion, as is unworthy of him. For the one is unbelief, the other is contumely; and certainly superstition is the reproach of the Deity.
Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education, in the elder, a part of experience. He that travelleth into a country, before he hath some entrance into the language, goeth to school, and not to travel.
OF
TRAVEL OF
EMPIRE
It is a miserable state of mind, to have few things to desire, and many things to fear; and yet that commonly is the case of kings; who, being at the highest, want matter of desire, which makes their minds more languishing; and have many representations of perils and shadows, which makes their minds the less clear. To speak now of the true temper of empire, it is a thing rare and hard to keep; for both temper, and distemper, consist of contraries. But it is one thing, to mingle contraries, another to interchange them. The answer of Apollonius to Vespasian, is full of excellent instruction. Vespasian asked him, What was Nero's overthrow? He answered, Nero could touch and tune the harp well; but in government, sometimes he used to wind the pins too high, sometimes to let them down too low. And certain it is, that nothing destroyeth authority so much, as the unequal and untimely interchange of power pressed too far, and relaxed too much.

Arguments for Atheism

After millennia of trying to come up with arguments for the existence of God, all theologians and philosophers have been able to produce are lame logical fallacies. No credible evidence has ever been found for the existence of a god. Of course, it is impossible to prove conclusively that gods don't exist just like its impossible to conclusively prove that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Invisible Pink Unicorn don't exist. However, it is irrational to believe in fanciful creatures for which there is no evidence. As Carl Sagan said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." In the case of theism, not only do we not have extraordinary evidence, we don't have any credible evidence at all. There is simply no valid reason whatsoever for believing in the existence of God. Not only are there no sound arguments indicating that a god exists, there are several sound arguments indicating that God does not exist. This article introduces some of these arguments and provides links to other articles which discuss the arguments more thoroughly.

Agnosticism , n. -
Agnosticism is the epistemological position that one cannot ever know positively whether or not supernatural phenomena, especially gods, exist. This was the original definition when the term was coined by Thomas Huxley in 1876, and is the most "correct" definition. Note that since this says nothing as to whether or not gods actually exist, it is possible to be both an agnostic and an atheist, or an agnostic and a fideist theist. Most people who identify themselves as "agnostics" are "weak" atheists . Although Huxley himself mistakenly claimed that agnosticism was a third, distinct option between the alleged certainty of theism and the alleged certainty of atheism, Huxleyian agnosticism should

http://www.doesgodexist.org/AboutClayton/PastLife.html
Why I Left Atheism My high school career was one in which I grew quite rapidly academically. I enjoyed science and decided that I wanted to be a scientist of some kind. I entered Indiana University majoring in the field of physical science. It was actually at this point that one of the great changes that occurred in my life took place. I enrolled in a course in astronomy at the feet of one of the great astronomers of our day. In that particular course, we were studying the problem of originsthe creation of matter from nothing. As we discussed this particular subject, we went into all those theories that are in that particular material. We talked about the big-bang theory, the quasistatal theory, the continuous generation theory, the planetessimal theory, etc. I read the Bible through from cover to cover four times during my sophomore year in college for the explicit purpose of finding scientific contradictions in it. By that, I mean statements in the Bible that were false that I could throw back at her to show her how ridiculous it was to believe in God. I had even decided to write a book called All the Stupidity of the Bible . Something amazing happened as I did this. As I considered and thought about these things, I found that I could not find a contradictionto find some kind of scientific inaccuracy in the Bible. I just simply was not able to do it. I gave up writing the book because of lack of material! It is amazing to me that as I talk to people, I find many who claim to be Christians and who perhaps claim to have been Christians for many years who have not read the Bible through cover to cover once. I find it hard to believe that they believe in God very much if they do not even want to know what He has to say.

Whereas Western universities once existed to train clergymen and educate others in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, modern centers of higher learning are much more secular and skeptical toward anything remotely religious. Faith is a taboo subject among many of the educated elite; indeed, persons with strong religious convictions are often viewed with scorn and disapproval. Equating all religious beliefs with the seemingly intolerant attitude of Fundamentalists, the more ardent critics of religion are so bold as to equate faith with ignorance and disparage any attempt to support faith with reason as naive.

Arguments for Atheism
Though the history of the philosophy of religion has been dominated by attempts to prove the existence of God, there also exist a number of arguments that seek to disprove theism. These range from a priori arguments that the concept of God is logically incoherent, to a posteriori arguments that the world is not the way that it would be if God existed. The atheistic proofs section surveys these arguments for atheism.
Arguments for Atheism
Within the Arguments for Atheism section, the arguments are arranged under the following headings: The Presumption of Atheism The Problem of Evil Problems with Omnipotence (including the paradox of the stone), Problems with Omniscience Immortality Heaven and Hell Petitionary Prayer ... The Psychogenesis of Religion , and Religion and Memetics

Evangelistic Atheism:
Leading Believers Astray
By Dan Barker
This article originally appeared in the January/February 1993 issue of Freethought Today , published by the Freedom From Religion Foundation . Electronically reproduced with permission. Freethought is worth sharing with the world. If the conditions are right, it is possible for a freethinker to successfully evangelize a believer. "Evangelism" is a perfectly good word. The Greek word "angel" means "messenger." Evangelism is simply "good news." "Atheism" is positive. Although it is constructed with the privative prefix (negative in the sense of "without," not "against"), it should be viewed as a double negative. By comparison, "non-violence" is considered to be a positive word. Since "theism" is unreasonable and even dangerous, the message that we can be free of it is good news. Atheism is like having a large debt cancelled. I am not suggesting that every atheist should be an evangelist. Some are better off temporarily keeping their views to themselves for job security or family harmony. Some freethinkers wisely wait until they retire, when they have little to lose, before they become vocal. In certain communities, open unbelief can be costly. Nor am I suggesting that every evangelistic atheist will always be successful. I learned in the ministry that evangelism is like sales. You can't sell everyone. But you can't sell anyone if you don't first convince them that they have a need or desire for what you are selling.

About New Contents Links ... Typo? This is my answer to the occasionally asked question "How can you be so sure there is no God." This is not a parable. It's all true; in the normal, generally accepted sense of the word "true". There are a couple of patches of metaphor here and there, but these should be obvious from context. If you have doubts about which is which, feel free to write and ask for clarification. Since this occurred over the course of several years, nearly twenty years ago, a few mistakes are inevitable. Where the details have faded from my mind over the years (and I'm aware that they have faded) I've reconstructed them giving some indication that's what I've done. I am well aware of how arrogant some of this will sound, but I see no way, in this case, to be accurate and modest at the same time. I'm also aware some of this won't sit well with my fellow Atheists, but that's why I call myself a Heretic. In my last year of junior high, or maybe my first of senior high, I went through a period of poor health. It wasn't life-threatening, or debilitating; just a period when my resistance was down and I was laid low for a week at a time by every single bug that was going around. As a consequence, I became intimately acquainted with daytime TV. One of the televangelists (Oral Roberts, I think) was doing some shtick with blessed oil from the Holy Lands. I had no interest in anointing anything, but I was collecting bottles at the time, and the one the oil came in looked pretty cool. He was giving the bottles away free, so I called the 800 number and gave them my address.
