Office of Special Education And Rehabilitative Services U.S. Department of Education. Indentifying ADD If you believe your child shows signs of ADD-Short attention span, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity-there are several steps you can take. Since most children occasionally show some of these signs, ask yourself if the behavior you are concerned about is persistent and if your child consistently exhibits such behavior in most settings. If so, you should first consult with others who know the child well, such as relatives and family friends. Talk to them about the ADD behaviors and have them indicate the ones they see your child regularly exhibit. You also may want to keep notes on your child's behavior. Next, speak to your child's teachers, as many behaviors characteristic of ADD are most visible in the classroom. Your child's teachers may want to complete a checklist on ADD signs, or use their own experience with other children with ADD to help reach some conclusions of your own. In many cases, teachers may be the first to suspect a child has ADD and notify the parent(s). Keep in mind that some children show behaviors similar to children with ADD when they have learning problems stemming from other problems.

Roughly 3-5 percent of all children in the United States have ADHD, and it is believed that the vast majority retain the disorder through adulthood. There are three recognized types of ADHD:
  • hyperactive-impulsive. Also called "classic" ADHD or just ADHD, hyperactive-impulsive sufferers are often restless, inpatient, and talkative. inattentive. Also called by its misnomer, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Inattentive sufferers are "space-cases," often easily distracted and quickly bored. combined type.

edit "Pseudo-ADD" and Situational Attention Deficit
ADHD is a delibilitating disorder which can profoundly harm your productivity and ability to cope. However, Edward Hallowell , a psychiatrist and expert in the field, also recognizes what he calls "pseudo-ADD" in his recent book Delivered from Distraction . Pseudo-ADD is a recognition that many modern cultures celebrate the multitasking that can lead to ADD symptoms. The distinction he makes is that people with pseudo-ADD cease showing symptoms when they are removed from the problem environment; i.e., when on vacation.

What to look for (Bear in mind that attention deficit disorder (ADD) is often misdiagnosed because so many of the symptoms are related to normal child development)
  • habitual failure to pay attention. problems with school work. easily distracted - continually. an inability to organise impulsiveness. hypoactivity excessive talking and frequent interrupting.
Although this condition does exist it is hard to define and often misdiagnosed. It is overused by lay people and often used as an excuse for poor behaviour. Most ADD children are of normal or high intelligence. Their activity levels may be normal, lower than normal (hypoactivity), or higher than normal (a version that has its own diagnostic label: attention deficit hypoactivity disorder, or ADHD). An ADD child may also have a specific learning disability that prevents him from taking in and sorting out information in the same way other children do. His brain is unable to process the messages his ears, eyes, or muscles give him.

Listen Add to Collection Help ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER and HYPERACTIVITY Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) occurs in 3% to 5% of children, mostly boys. A child with A.D.D. hasn't learned to listen when someone talks, wait his turn, complete a task, or return to a task if interrupted. They are easily distractible and have a low frustration for tolerance. Many children with A.D.D. also are hyperactive (also called hyperkinetic), with symptoms of being restless, impulsive, and in perpetual motion. Their activity is poorly organized and not directed towards a purposeful goal. Hyperactivity usually starts before age 4, often starts in infancy, and some mothers claim that their baby was hyperactive in the uterus! The most important thing to remember is that the truly hyperactive child has little control over his actions and is not deliberately doing things to drive his parents and teachers crazy. Most of these children have normal intelligence. However some do have an associated learning disability the most common being an auditory processing deficit (i.e., they have difficulty understanding complex instructions). Diagnosis: Physicians make the diagnosis of A.D.D. or hyperactivity mainly from the parent's and teacher's description of the child's behavior. Some doctors use standardized questionnaires that are answered by the parent and/or the teacher. It's important to find out if any of the child's relatives had a similar type of problem. The physician will need to have a clear picture of the home and social situations. A thorough physical exam is performed, which is usually normal. Lab tests are seldom useful. Your child should have psychological and learning tests done by the school to test his intelligence level and to check for the presence of any specific learning disabilities.

Font Font Attention Deficit Disorder is a complex condition that is not well understood at the present time by many clinicians and the general public. New information is being discovered rapidly however. Dr. Amen is one of the pioneers in this field and this article is meant to summarize his work.
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) occur as a result of neurological dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. This is the newest part of our tri-brain system in evolutionary terms. It is the part of our brain that performs executive functions. The functions of this brain deal with 1) attention span, 2) perseverance, 3) judgment, 4) organization, 5) impulse control, 6) self-monitoring and supervision, 7) problem solving, 8) critical thinking, 9) forward thinking, 10) learning from experience, 11) ability to feel and express emotions, 12) interaction with the limbic system, and 13) empathy.
Whenever there is a problem with this part of the brain, a number of skills that many human beings take for granted would not be available in any optimal way. The following are
