Bring a plate
An invitation to bring a plate of food to share at a social gathering or fundraiser. There are many stories of new arrivals in Australia being bamboozled by the instruction to bring a plate . As the locals know, an empty plate will not do. In earlier days the request was often 'ladies a plate', sometimes followed by 'gentlemen a donation'. bring a plate in use

ONE PEOPLE! ONE DESTINY!
Pathways to Australian Federation
  • Code A9 DVD Video (90 minutes: 3 x 30 minute sections) 24 page worksheet booklet designed for class use that reinforces many of the concepts raised in the video Suitable ages 14+
This video traces the growth of Australian democracy from the first European settlement in 1788 to the declaration of Federation on January 1, 1901. Divided into three, thirty minute parts, this video will provide your students with the background they need to understand how and why Australia federated. Using a mixture of on-screen presentation, archival photographs and visits to historical sites where the events being narrated actually occurred, this video will be a refreshing addition to students' studies of this important period of our history. The video is ideal for students aged 14 and older and can be either used to provide a background to studies in nineteenth century Australian history, or as a detailed examination for studies of Australian federation. In the NSW history syllabus the video is a useful resource to bring students up to date before they embark on studies involving Civics or Federation and 20th century Australian history. One People! One Destiny! is narrated by Karina Kelly.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE Compiled by Anne Mavric August 26th - The "Endeavour" sailed from Plymouth on her eventful voyage, the Commander, First Lieutenant James Cook (1728-1779) Mariner, accompanied by Zachary Hicks - Second Lieutenant, John Gore - Third Lieutenant, Robert Molineaux - Master and the English botanist Joseph Banks (1743-1820). Cook, son of a farm labourer, was born at Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, left school at 13, and later became a deckhand in the Baltic and coastal trade, transferring to the Royal Navy as an able seaman in 1755. After only two years he had achieved the rank of Master. In 1758 in the "Pembroke" and later "Northumberland" , he took part in survey work on the Canadian east coast and the action against the French. His map making skills and detailed report of a solar eclipse in 1766 made him favourably known to the Royal Society which invited him through the Admiralty, to take command of a voyage of scientific observation and exploration in the Pacific. The objectives of the expedition, which had been organised by the Royal Society of London and the Admiralty were:

The first recorded landfall by a European on Australian soil. 1606 (August) Portuguese seaman Luis Vaez de Torres sails through the Torres Strait, between Australia and New Guinea, along the latter's southern coast. He may well have sighted the northernmost extremity of Australia, although this is not recorded. Torres reported 'shoals', some of which may have been the northernmost atolls of the Great Barrier Reef. The name 'Coste Dangereuse', for the tropical Queensland coast, appears on French charts. Dutch captain Dirk Hartog in the Eendracht makes the second recorded landfall by a European, at Dirk Hartog Island on the western coast of Australia. Leaves behind the Hartog plate.

The number of events described in a Source Book must necessarily be smaller than that in histories of another type; but the aim is to place the student in contact with the evidence of history in order that he may become his own historian by drawing his own deductions from the contemporary records. The greatest historian can find no materials ulterior to such as are here presented, for there is nothing ulterior to them but the deeds themselves. They are the records written by the men who gave their life and health to lay the foundation of Australia's greatness

These acts were similar to the United States Homestead Act and were intended to encourage closer settlement, based on intensive agriculture, such as wheat-growing, rather than extensive agriculture, such as wool production. Selectors often came into conflict with squatters , who already occupied the land and often managed to circumvent the law. Contents:
