Famous Aviators of Floyd Bennett Field
Floyd Bennett Field was the origination point and in some cases the return point of many record-setting and record-breaking aviation feats. The field, not having lived up to New York's expectations of becoming a major commercial field, was a perfect spot for the multitudes of aviation pioneers and daredevils to launch their flights. The first of many record-breaking flights was in 1931 by Russell Boardman and John Polando. They took off from Floyd Bennett Field and landed in Turkey to set a long distance record.
Bendix Trophy Race
The field had many air races with it being the finish line for the Bendix Trophy Race. The 1932 Bendix Trophy Race from Burbank, Ca. to Floyd Bennett was won by James Hiazlip setting a trans-continental speed record of 10 hours and 19 minutes. This record was not to be long-lived. In the 1933 Bendix Race, Col. Roscoe Turner, a close friend of Hiazlip, set a new cross country record by completing the same flight in 10 hours, 4 minutes and 55 seconds. Turner always flew with his pet lion until it got too big. In the 1936 Bendix Race, three of the top five finishers were women.
Women Flyers
Women played a large role in the aviation community at the field. Annette Gipson set a speed record for 100 kilometers for an aircraft weighing less than 1000 pounds. Her average speed was 123.23 KPH. An annual all women's race, named after Gipson, was held at the field. In the 1933 Annette Gipson all women's race, Henrietta Sumner won the race. Twenty-three leading aviatrices competed in this race for an $850 first prize. On 1 February 1932, Ruth Nichols, flying a Packard Lockheed monoplane, set an altitude record at the field of 19928 feet for oil burning planes.

http://www.mobility-advisor.com/wheelchair-aviators.html
International Wheelchair Aviators
Although the International Wheelchair Aviators (IWA) organization began in 1972 as just a monthly "fly to lunch" group of four paraplegic aviators from the Southern California area, it has developed into a worldwide group of disabled and able bodied (A/B) pilots interested in aviation and flying. The mission of the IWA is to help disabled pilots in their quest to fly by providing valuable information about Federal Aviation Association (FAA) medical requirements, hand control availability and flight schools that work with those confined to wheelchairs. Members have many different disabilities including paraplegia, quadriplegia, amputee, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, polio and other problems. Through their hard work and persistence and with the help of a tolerant FAA medical system, hundreds of disabled pilots have been given the opportunity to fly, many to resume flying careers and others to fly for the first time. Over the part 25 years, several hundred disabled pilots have flown thousands of hours all over the world and in many different types of aircraft using hand controls or whatever was necessary to operate the aircraft as pilot in command. The majority of members fly primarily for enjoyment, though some utilize their planes for transportation bypassing the regular pinched confines and schedules of the airlines. Several members are professional air show performers.

The crash occurred at about 3:45 p.m. in a rural area near Steele, Ala., some 60 miles north of Birmingham.
Wreckage is strung along the mountainside of a crashed U.S. Navy T-34C Turbomentor on Chandler Mountain near Steele, Ala., on Friday. Two aviators in the plane were killed in the crash.
A spokeswoman with the Etowah County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office said the plane crashed on Chandler Mountain. She said lawmen were using a helicopter to help with the recovery effort.
A neighbor, Alison Limbaugh, said she heard a loud boom and thought it was from a nearby rock quarry, Rogers said. By then, 911 calls were coming in, but no one knew what the boom had been.

Aviation Through the Ages Famous Aviators These famous aviators were known for their courage and daring. They brought many innovations to the field of aviation. The Red Baron Baron Manfred Von Richthofen was a German military aviator, born in Breslau. Richthofen was in the cavalry and the infantry before joining the German air service during World War I. He led a unique group of of fighter pilots who became known as Richthofen's circus. Richthofen painted his plane red to flaunt his prowess in the air and thus earned the nickname of the Red Knight of Germany or the Red Baron. He was credited with the destruction of 80 Allied planes before being shot down behind British lines in April 1918. Chuck Yeager Charles (Chuck) Elwood Yeager was the first person to fly an aircraft faster than the speed of sound. He was born in Myra, West Virginia in 1923. Yeager started military service during World War II as a fighter pilot and retired in 1975 with the rank of brigadier general. He accomplished this on October 14, 1947, in a Bell X-1 rocket plane, he called "Glamorous Glennis" after his wife. He set another speed record on December 12, 1953, by flying a Bell X-1A rocket plane at 2 1/2 times the speed of sound. To learn about Chuck Yeager's most famous flight go to this site.

http://www.alexanderpalace.org/aerialrussia/workmen.html
A Scotman in Russia The First Steps ... By Way of Conclusion
The intimate relations that exist between employers and employed in Russia is something quite unknown in this country, and their almost brotherly friendliness is absolutely unaffected by social or financial differences. Count Leo Tolstoy has described these relations in his famous story, The Master and the Workman, and as long as they continue, social revolution in Russia is impossible. Above: Mr. Popoff, a famous Russian Pilot The Russian workman, engaged on a task of national importance, regards himself as a soldier, and he performs his duty without complaint, however unfavourable may be the circumstances. It is true that there was something like a rebellion in Moscow in 1915, but it was essentially a patriotic rebellion. The workers resented the presence of Germans in the factories. Most of these men were foremen and technical experts and the Russian Government hesitated to accede to the demands for their dismissal. This hesitation caused first a strike and then some regrettable street fighting.
The Russian workman concerned with new inventions and modern technical developments puts his whole soul into his daily task, eager to have a hand in an interesting enterprise, and desirous of learning as much about it as he possibly can. At such a time he forgets his unfavourable economic situation and the fiercest revolutionary propaganda cannot persuade him to drop his tools. The trade unions regard these men with peculiar tolerance, and, if it is considered that their work is of real national significance, they are not expected to join the strikers if an industrial dispute should occur.
