Font Font It is that time of year again. The time most kids dread and parents look forward to all summer. Yes, it is time to head back to school. It is also time to remind our kids about safety going to and from school and activities. We live in a fast-paced society where safety is sometimes forgotten. Here are some important safety reminders for your children as they begin the new school year.
Riding the school bus is still the safest transportation to and from school. However, there are some things to keep in mind, as most school bus incidents occur while entering or exiting the bus. Wait for the bus in a safe place away from the street and traffic. Do not approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the driver opens the door. Use the handrail as you enter and exit the bus. When getting off of the bus, make sure that you move completely away from the bus. A good rule of thumb is to walk 10 big steps away from it, if possible. Always keep a safe distance between you and the bus. If you need to cross the street, walk out far enough for the bus driver to see you completely. Wait for all traffic to come to a complete stop and do not cross until the bus driver has signaled for you to do so. Remember that not all drivers adhere to the rules concerning stopped school buses. Always be alert! If possible, try to meet your

Back To School Safety
Children need to learn how to stay safe when travelling to and from school to help reduce the risks of pedestrian and bicycle injuries.
Walking to School
  • Spend time walking with your children and observe how they deal with traffic. Choose the route to school or the bus stop that is the safest for your child. Take the same route every day and avoid short cuts. Remind your children to demonstrate proper pedestrian behavior. It is extremely important for them to look both directions twice and always walk facing traffic if no pavement is available. Pick the place where your child will cross the street. Never enter the street from between parked cars or from behind brushes or shrubs. Cross streets at corners. Use traffic signals and pedestrian crossings whenever possible. Provide your children with bright clothing so motorists can easily see them.
Riding on a Bus to School
If possible, an adult should be close to the bus stop at all times, and children should be remember the rules of the road:

Beginning in mid-August through most of September, schools throughout Maryland will begin welcoming students back from their summer vacations. Whether you are a parent, child, school administrator, driver, or a concerned citizen, the following tips will help keep our Students safe.
Bus Stop Your child's bus stop should be in an area that is well lit, easily accessible, and away from traffic. If it is not, contact
school administrators to have the stop moved. In some situations, you may need to contact the City or State. If you live in an area where there is heavy snowfall, make sure that the stop is sufficiently free of snow, ice, and related debris.
2. Clothing Children should be wearing bright colored clothing, especially if waiting for the bus before sunrise or getting home after
dark. Place removable reflective tape on their outer garments including on their hats and coats.

Back to School Safety It can be tricky getting your kids to school in a safe manner. As we pack our K-12 kids up and get them ready for another school year, we need to be constantly thinking about their safety. This applies both to their travel to and from school and their safety while on school grounds. Parent drivers must remain watchful. Children dart unexpectedly into traffic, often from between parked cars. And young pedestrians face a variety of dangers while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety tips to follow:

The following health and safety tips are from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
Making the First Day Easier
  • Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her memory about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time. Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus. If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

Back To School Safety Nationwide, injury to pedestrians is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury and related death among children age 5 to 14 years old. Studies also show that there may be a great risk for children who ride their bicycles to school. Last year, 22 percent of bicyclists killed were between 10 and 14 years of age. These statistics can be frightening, but if parents educate children about safety on the way to school, these risks can be significantly reduced. Walking to School

Back To School: Keeping Students Safe
By Dr. Pam Riley for National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.) As millions of students and parents nationwide are gearing up for the first day of school, many are focused on buying supplies and new clothes. But what they might not be thinking about what may be even more important. This is an opportune time to consider how to prepare students for the conflicts, stress, and challenges they might face when they go back to school. What can parents do to protect their students? In a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report on school violence, sponsored by the Safe and Drug Free School program, U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Justice, researchers found that student homicide rates are usually highest during the start of a new school year and in the spring. The report warns that teenagers are most stressed and prone to violence during transition periods – such as the beginning of the school year. With the first anniversary of 9/11 this year, that stress level may be even greater. Conflicts that arise between students in the fall may escalate into more serious violence as the school year progresses. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions that will offer guidance on how parents can keep their children safe at school. Please share this information with the parents of students in your school.
